BGL rides off into the sunset

RDS is reporting that Big Georges Laraque is a Hab no more. His contract has been bought out. Basically he was fired.

So many emotions. Well, not really. He never did what he was supposed to do with the Habs. You know, fight. Have a steak to celebrate.

  1. Aww BGL?

Good riddance you tofu-eating, yoga-doing, wimp!

  3. Totally of topic here but man, those are fabulous boots.

  4. One thing Bob doesn't like is players criticizing the team in the media. Just ask Bouillon, Dandenault, and now Laraque.

Now, Bob, on to more important matters. There's a Czech you need to cash in.

  5. Yikes!

    Anyone read the TSN article?

    Summary:
    -He sounds beyond pissed.
-He called the Habs classless because of the timing. (Just last week, he said they were oh so classy for the Haiti donation.)
-He said JM doesn`t believe in toughness and dìdn`t like him.

  6. @boob

That`s right, more money to sign Pleks!!!

  7. The habs aren't classless. If anything, the fact they bought him out shows class. They could have made him pass through waivers and bury him in the minors. That way, his cap hit would be 0$.

Word verif: bustn. As in, BGL was a bustn as a Hab.

  8. ""Classless," Laraque said angrily. "To do this in the midst of all I'm dealing with in Haiti, the timing is awful. I'm not going to sugar coat anything.

Yeah, you're just about the unluckiest Haitian in the world right now.

    What an asshole.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Look at the bright side, BGL, now you can take the $$ and go help out in Haiti without some pesky enforcer job getting in the way!

    ReplyDelete
  10. As a haïtian, I think the timing is shitty,as a hab fan, i was about fuckin time but really Bob should't have hired him in the first place. Bob needs to go.

  11. I'm not sure I understand what being Haitian has to do with Bob's timing. The tragedy there is not lessened by BGL playing hockey or not playing hockey or selling synthetic ice or opening up a yoga gym. The guy gets $1,000,000 and is free to go and help the earthquake relief teams if that's what he wants to do. Sounds like perfect timing to me.

  13. @beefington

bullshit. he didn't do his job. we are talking about le boys, our team, not haitia and our sucks. the end.

  15. HA! Gainey just ripped BGL a new one about his "code".

    Burn!

  16. Martin just anointed Price as the new enforcer. He'll play on the fourth line with O'Byrne and Bergeron, with D'Agostini backing up Jaro.

Good riddance, BGL. I don't hate the man, but he didn't work out.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Is Greg Stewart going to get a callup now.

@ HabsFan10 - Price the new enforcer! Ha ha I like it.

It didn't piss me off that BGL didn't fight (he did), but the fact that he didn't check.

  18. Almost all the comments are bang on so while were at it based on BLG's value (or lack thereof) lets also get rid of

    Uncle Bob
JM ''i have about as much emotion as a rock''
    The 8 million dollar mexican.
    The 5 million dollar giant
    The jolly green giant
Lappy, Metro, oh and i don't know half a dozen others Uncle Bob gave tryouts to this season.
Dollar ''now i'm a fighter cause i can't figure out how else to get the number one spot'' $ign.

That seems only fair if we measure these individuals against the same criteria we measure BLG.

  19. I'm celebrating with a nice juicy rare piece of porterhouse steak tonight. Maybe even some boudin as an appetizer.

  20. @moeman,

mmmmmm.....but I prefer my boudin with bacon and eggs. It's a British thing.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Moey

Sparrow on St.Laurent in that case.

  22. What the fuck is wrong with this team?

Cammy and Lapierre get into a scrap at practice, broken up by Metropolit and Moen...

    Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  23. the general sucklitude is obviously getting on everyone's nerve.

Bob apparently said that Laraque was a distraction.
I guess GG's comment on him talking veggan recipe was obviously right on.

bye bye Georges, wont miss you.
it's tough being a dinosaur in a mammalian world

  24. Cammy versus Lappy must have been the lamest fight since David Bowie and Lou Reed went at it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Four fights this year is not enoughg. Said that in these posts about a week ago.

All this nonsense about timing...shut the fuck up. It's just like saying "It's because I'm black."

If we had Derek Boogard and he had contributed four fights and was benched every other game he would be gone too. You don't earn your cheque you don't play.

Now its officially Gainey though. If he would have spent Gionta's money on Kovalev I could forgive him for Gomez. But he didn't and supposedly wants to trade away Tits bros as fast as he can and possibly Plekanec if he can get the right *ahem Atlanta star. Not to mention the Huet mistake.

@ Robbie - You really think Metro was a bad signing? I thought that was one of Gainey's better moves.

  26. btw
    WV: discif

Hey Georges you could have claimed it was because of your bulging back discif the Haiti earthquake hadn't occured!

  27. Laraque does not deserve to be a part of this team. -6 with 28 penalty minutes (-12 and 89pims since joining the habs) is a joke. He should have fought more or at least played tough instead of trying to play hockey.... Lesson learned. I’m also sick of the 'Nobody wants to fight him' excuse. Konopka, Orr, and Boogaard have no problem fighting. And for fuck sakes the X-Hab Raitis Ivanans even has 10 fights.

But, with that being said what is eve more shocking is not that we have let him go, but how our terrible GM Bob Gainey signed him in the first place to 4.5m AND a no movement clause!. Bob Gainey needed to be fired yesterday. Correction, he should have been fired after he got rid of Carbo. and whoever gave him the go ahead for the bulk of his off season signings should also be immediately shot and pissed on.

Bottom line, Gainey is as useful as my grandma on her rag.

    FIRE GAINEY!

  28. @Jay so far i think the chicken is the best deal Uncle Bob has made. Metro looked good for awhile but lately...not so much..but then again who has looked good. Its funny how BGL is getting the tough ride. Lets face it he was a one dimensional player with no role.

There are so many other high paid players who i would much rather see take the bus or as in GG's amazing photo shop ride the horse out of town. JM is supposed to have a system. The unfortunate thing is after 51 games no one seems to get it or if they get it they refuse to use it. JM is simply repeating his failures in Ottawa...the only difference is that that team knew how to win in the regular season (sucked in the playoffs). I wonder why JM is getting a pass compared to the way we have treated other coaches in the past.

  29. All this drama about players being distractions is bringing back memories of lat season -__-

  30. I agree. I never wanted anything to do with Martin. His style is absolutely obselete. I cringed when Gomez was signed. Wouldn't he be a good buy at exactly half his salary?

Gill I have liked but gets too much 5 on 5 time. Moen is the type of guy we needed big time and has been decent. Mara seems to get injured weekly. Gionta just scrapes by and Cammalleri seems to not be the guy who gets big goals lately.

Overall it is a failed experiment. To make playoffs and have enough juice left to compete would really be a miracle at this point. Im hearing Plekanec and so and so for Kovalchuk everyday on hockeybuzz. Maybe we get the 1A superstar we have always needed. More probable were stuck with the underachievers + Plekanec we already have.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sorry Jaybird, but Gomez, Cammy and Gionta are among the few bright spots on the team.

And anything you read on hockeybuzz is guaranteed not to happen (unless it's already happened of course).

    ReplyDelete
  32. You hear allot of the trade this guy or that guy. In the end however Uncle Bob has experimented this team into the back of the labratory and no one wants any part of it atleast not the guys we should probably say goodbye to. The only experiment he has left is the two goalies but as many have mentioned in this blog you have to find that deal and right now it does not seem to exist. The sad part is i'm not sure that ANY deal would make any difference to this team.

The other issues is this idea that making it to the playoffs only to get knocked out in the first round is going to do something magical. Then what? This team has some serious issues and needs some serious work and one round in the playoffs isn't going to make me feel any better about Uncle Bob, JM, The Mexican, The Giant, or a handful of others i mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Are you serious Bob? I mean i've seen your comments and you seem like a knowlegable hockey guy. I could see you calling Halak emerging as a legitimate starter a bright spot, or the current chicken experiment a bright spot. But if your callin 18 million worht of what they have produced sucess then I can't say i agree. on a one third deal i would keep the squid but thats it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. WTF? Laraque had a no movement clause so he could not be put on waivers.

Why would this man have a no movement clause?

    ReplyDelete
  35. BGL was on the Team 990 earlier this week to raise money for Haiti. Some poor sod pledged $6000 for tickets to a Habs game, a tour of the dressing room with BGL and the Habs player of his choice. Also a BGL autographed jersey. I wonder how that's going to play out now? Does he get his money back? Oy vay.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "Why would this man have a no movement clause?"

    Bad back.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @ boob

    Waaa waa wa

    Bad joke noise...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow - Gainey must really be pissed at Laraque to get rid of him. The rules dictate that he will remain a roster player.

So they are paying him, and will only have a 22 man roster.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, however we feel about BG, we can all agree that he's certainly made things interesting over the past couple of years. Amazing that in this day and age of Twatter, the internet and everything else, he still manages to pull shit off that no one expects.

    Also, he might be crazy.

  40. In more important news, Mr. Beliveau has suffered a stroke last night;

    http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=307119

"Hockey great Jean Beliveau has suffered a stroke. CTV News has learned the Montreal Canadiens legend suffered a stroke last night and was transported to the Montreal General Hospital.

He is now in the neurological department and no further details on his condition are available at this time. However, a source tells CTV News that his life is not in danger.

A 10-time Stanley Cup champion and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Beliveau has been named an honourary Team Canada member and honourary captain of Canada's 2010 Men's Olympic Hockey Team.

Béliveau spent his entire 20-season NHL career as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, recording 1,219 points in 1,125 games. He retired from the NHL following the 1970-71 season."

    ReplyDelete
  41. @moeman: Here's to a quick recovery by Beliveau. He's always been my favourite amongst all of the old-time Canadiens, despite never having seen him play. I was pretty happy to get my picture taken in front of his statue last year.

  42. heh @ ADDENDUM: Buh bye, BGL.

  43. thx moe. i assumed no one even looked over there!

  44. wow. i just found the '90 all-star game on ESPN Classic. Mario, Wayne, and a 24-year old St Patrick in nets. 21 seconds in, Mario scores. fun.

  45. You guys are a bunch of jerks!

How would you feel if your boss fired you while you were dealing with a personal tragedy?

Yeah, you'd feel like shit and you'd be calling your boss a whole bunch of names!

Whether or not he deserved it is beside the point, if there was a history of problems with BGL, then they should have been dealt with a long time ago; if not, then give the guy a chance to get on his feet before sending him packing.

I love the Habs, but these past few years the management of the team has done things that make it look like a Mickey Moose club. It's been a constant disappointment; especially considering the high hopes for the 100th year.

The blame for that starts with the top.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anon - Sorry, no, they are all class. They wanted to dump him last week but the circumstances were not wise considering what happened in Haiti. They offered him to take a leave of absence to deal with the tragedy and he decided to stay. The fact they gave him a no-movement clause is pure class, and respect, as a mickey mouse organization would have waived him and buried his arse in the minors by now. They were looking for a trade but that didn't work out. (Guess the Oilers weren't so attached to him eh). So, no, the Habs organization is all class.

I don't like the buyout idea though. How did the Devils sneak Shanahan's contract off their books?
