On my way to Montreal in an hour for a few days, looking into moving back there in the summer. Nail biting bronze for Kristina followed by a heart pounding gold from Alex. I'm in heaven and will be surrounded by the angels at Schwartz's and Fairmount Bagel soon enough.

At least they could have sent some Mtl guys for the Chinese restaurants and the Vietnamese restaurants and the Lebanese restaurants. The other bitch is that Markov seems to have had a miraculous recovery. Would Markov have made a difference against the Phlyers? I don't think he could have taken care of necessary policing. ReplyDeleteAnd while we're on the subject of cultural intolerance, I'd like to clear the air about my feeling towards Youppi. I have nothing against him personally. Some of my best friends are fuzzy, orange-haired two sport wonders (GG can attest that this is true). I just don't think the Canadiens need a mascot. Perhaps it's time for Youppi to be sent up north to live on a farm.

ReplyDeleteIn all fairness, Nikki is 16. Whoever did her arangement might have Americanized the anthem but at 16 I was sneaking into Casa Pedro's, not standing up in front of the entire world (wearing 6 inch heels) with the poise of a seasoned performer.
On another note, why do you think the Canadian speed skating uniforms have seat belts? To prove that as a country we're safety conscious? That and the intro and exit music to every commercial are making me nuts.

ReplyDeleteThat's EXACTLY what I was thinking. Had Celine been up there with her Vegas version of the anthem I would have been sick. Well, actually, that's not true. I would've just turned it off. Nikki sang the anthem at the Panthers game in Florida on new year's eve (what self respecting Montreal Jew WASN'T there that night) and she was terrific. Much lower key.
I am sure glad they didn't let her anywhere near that stage. Probably one of the highlight of the ceremony.

Considering the nature of this site, I think a Hot Olympic Athlete of the Day (or HOAD?) might be needed. They could be male or female. Or one of each. I'm man enough to admit there's some fine looking young fellas at these games. Well, actually Mrs LD pointed it out, but still. And I think we could probably keep it Canadian, but we'd probably be missing out on some quality Euro/Asian material.
