The Weekend Open Thread of Love doesn't have much to say...

...because it's got a tongue down its throat! [rimshot]

Fuck there does not seem to be anything hockey related going on right now to talk about. We've officially landed in the post-UFA pre-training camp lull of the hockey off-season. I don't even have a TWOTOL topic starter for you. We always come back to Bob I guess. Robert over at EOTP has an outstanding rundown of all the Gainey moves over his regime. And I mean all of them. My god Robert does a lot of work while I surf for porn. So what's the over / under on Bob getting the axe if the season starts like crap? I'll go with November 28th, when Ovie scores six in an 8-1 Habs loss at the Big Owe.

All other topics are good in TWOTOL as always. I'm up early to watch The Open Championship. Go Tom! Suck it Tiger! The Als have a big clash tomorrow this afternoon. Anyone see a good movie lately? Anyone watch True Blood? Anyone have a good BBQ recipe? TWOTOL loves a good recipe.

  1. What about a very simple cake recipe? I have a cake recipe that uses a box of cake mix and melted premium ice cream (like Ben & Jerry's).

  2. ICE CREAM CAKE:

    *****

    you need:

1 package (18.25 oz) plain white cake mix, preferably without added pudding

2 cups melted ice cream, any flavor (it must be some super-premium brand, because the cheaper brands have more air and won't be enough when melted - my favorite is a pint of Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia)

    3 large eggs

    *****

    Spray a 13" x 9" pan with cooking spray and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (177 C).

    *****

Combine cake mix, melted ice cream, and eggs in a large mixing bowl and blend on low speed for a minute, scrape the sides with a rubber spatuala, beat another couple minutes on medium until the batter is well blended and thick.

Pour it in the pan, smooth the top with the spatula, and bake until the cake pulls away from the sides of the pan and pops back when lightly pressed, 38 to 42 minutes.

    That's it!

Clearly, you have to wait until it is completely cooled before frosting the cake, and if you want to take it out of the pan you need to cool on a rack for about 20 minutes before putting it on a plate, but it's easier to leave the thing in the original dish.

(I got this from a book at some point, but it was years ago and I don't remember the title or anything now.)

  3. Movie recommendation. The Hangover. Enough said.

  4. When Gainey took over we had Joe Juneau, Donald Audette, and Doug Gilmour on the team. Players who had good seasons elsewhere in the past, but were essentially finished.

    We've come a long way ...

  5. Remember how we talked about Boone stealing FHF's Nilan story yesterday (posting it exactly 30 min later and with the exact same youtube link)?

Well, he has now added the following intro to the story:

"Pat Hickey, reHabbing and reading everything, found this tidbit in the Quincy (Mass.) Patriot-Ledger: ..."

    BULLSHIT!

  6. Movie recommendations :

Anything by Guy Ritchie. Snatch was my favorite, Brad Pitt was brilliant.

    Taken with Liam Neeson.

  7. @Moey, yes Snatch is good but 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' is a hoot. Incredible soundtrack too.

WV = punal, as in what punal code did they use to let go Bahama Nilan?

I thought Gran Torino was awesome.

  9. never got the deal with the guy ritchie, but gran torino is fun. bruno is pretty amazing and appeals to the fhf demographic. i saw the new woody allen last night, "whatever works", it's enjoyable and kind of strange, feeling as though you fell into some sort of meta-movie wormhole. also it's not out yet, but i saw the hurt locker at the montreal film festival last year and have to say it's fantastic and almost uncomfortable to watch. highly, highly recommended.

  10. The newest Guy Ritchie movie, Rock'N'Rolla, is pretty damn hilarious too.
IMO Snatch is a tad better than Lock Stock, though not by far. Both are awesome movies. Pitt's role in Snatch is one of my favorite individual performances ever.

Also, Gran Torino was very good. Clint Eastwood is the new Chuck Norris.

WV: our first line will be 'dedly' next year!

  12. @Baroque - i am fucking hungry now! thx.

btw, if anyone was actually looking to me for a CFL schedule, the Als game is today at 3, not tomorrow. my apologies if you planned your whole weekend around it, which i am sure you did

  13. Tom Watson has the 54 hole lead at the British. At age 59. I literally hope I will be alive at 59

  14. Speaking of True Blood, an older movie (1994ish) that a lot of people didn't see that I think really rocked is True Romance with Christian Slater and an Arquette.
If ever a movie title mislead potential viewers, this was it.

I really enjoyed the 'Smoking Barrels'. I know I saw Snatch but can't recall it.

    Go Watson!

Weir obviously tanked on purpose to save himself up for the Canadian....how else do you explain shooting an eagle one day and a triple bogey on the same hole the next day.

  15. You asked for recipes!

At least it's simple-minded enough for anyone to make, so one couls run to the store and quickly ease the cake craving. :)

  16. 14-8 Als in their retro jerseys.

Also, a can't miss flic is 'Reservoir Dogs' and yes 'True Romance' is another not-to-miss flic. Patricia Arquette is yummy in that movie.

  17. Italissimo:
    One part campari
    Two parts red grapefruit juice
    Two parts soda
Pour over ice in a highball glass
Fashion a toothpick into a hockey stick and use it to hold a garnish made of rare and exotic fruits. Or don`t, I don`t give a fuck.

  18. @moeman,

Reservoir Dogs was a good one too. The worst movie of all time for me was The English Patient, what a snoozefest.

NHL.com has a piece on their front page about the Hunchback's dream of playing in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Cue projectile vomiting.

A guy with skating issues, two years of NHL experience, and a career-high 15 goals on an overachieving, stacked Bruins team (that's still fewer than Lats got in his rookie year - would you have put Gui! on Team Canada after his first year?) gets an invite to the Olympic orientation camp, but older, more experienced, 28-goal scorer Alex Burrows doesn't? Selke runner-up Travis Zajac doesn't? Surely that spot could've gone to a more deserving player. Even Scott Hartnell, God forbid, would have been a better choice (and I fucking hate Hartnell).

  24. The Stanley Keg was awesome. Louis Leblanc's team won the kegger after overtime solved nothing so they went to a shootout. I took videos (currently uploading them to YouTube and it's taking forever). Sergio Momesso was also there (I think, well I know he was on a team but I'm not sure if it was the one Louis' team beat first but it looked like him and I don't think there was another old dude with a Habs' helmet running about). Awesome fun but it's FUCKING COLD in that damn Pierrefonds arena.
