Habs Robbed: Caps 6, Habs 5 OT

[If I can get hold of a screenshot providing the specific photographic evidence I'll post it. Update: Meanwhile here is a link to the video. Lapdance to commentator RiRi]

HF29 Update: Here's a screen cap to make Panger's blood boil:

Here is my goddamn review (sorry for the expletive so early on. I'm a goalie and a lawyer. You bet I'm worked up. Doesn't mean I'm wrong.):

Rule 69 - Interference on the Goalkeeper

69.1 Interference on the Goalkeeper - This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or (2) an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgment of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or review.

For purposes of this rule, “contact,” whether incidental or otherwise, shall mean any contact that is made between or among a goalkeeper and attacking player(s), whether by means of a stick or any part of the body.

The overriding rationale of this rule is that a goalkeeper should have the ability to move freely within his goal crease without being hindered by the actions of an attacking player. If an attacking player enters the goal crease and, by his actions, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to defend his goal, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed.

If an attacking player has been pushed, shoved, or fouled by a defending player so as to cause him to come into contact with the goalkeeper, such contact will not be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player for purposes of this rule, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.

[Emphasis obviously added.]

Poti Knuble clearly comes into contact with Halak before Gill hits him. Knuble's skates might have been outside the crease but it doesn't matter because he initiated contact. Even if he didn't, the fact is that Halak could not come out to the top of the crease and get set and square to the shooter, as he is entitled to do under the rule, because of Knuble's fucking huge ass hitting him in the chest right before the puck went in .

It is true that goal was scored in the second and the Habs had plenty of time to recover. But, admittedly, the Caps are too good offensively for the refs to hand them goals and expect Montreal to have a chance to win the series.

1-1 may be better than down 0-2, but it's a helluva lot worse than up 2-0 heading home. It could be worse - and it will be if the calls don't even out from here on in.

Comments! Comment on how right I am - unless you're a biased Caps Fan or Leafs Nation Kool-Aid Drinker. After all, Habs fans, especially us Four, are never biased.

Agree. 200%.

Even the god damn TSN Panel were saying what I was thinking. Reffing was one sided.

Anonymous said...

It's funny to read Habs fans complaining about the refs being biased against them. He, He, He, Ha. Did Halak have a weight tied to his glove hand? Carlson just keeps giving reasons for Canadians to hate him. Awesome blog.

Not Poti. Knuble.

HFF33 aka Panger said...

Upon further review, Micheal you are correct. Fixed in the post.

I formally apologize to Tom Poti for saying he had a fat ass. Clearly, it is Mr. Knuble who has an unsually large amount of junk in his truck.

Number31 said...

BUT Poti was the one who shoveled Jaro out of his net and then SAT on him not long after, and the refs didn't budge. They blew the whistle on a fucking HAND PASS.

Guillaume Theoret said...

What I found most ridiculous was when Halak was literally dragged out of his crease and there was NO CALL. What more can you possibly need for an interference call when the forward knocks over the goalie and starts PULLING HIM OUT OF THE CREASE while everyone else scrambles for the puck.

The reffing was disgusting.

Orangeman said...

Absolutely agree, GT. The interference on the goal I could *almost* forgive because if you're willfully blind and deaf (so, an NHL ref), you could miss that. But when Halak was being dragged from his crease I was screaming at my computer. That took premeditation to not call.

And it's not just one bad call, it's the tone of the reffing. How can you stop the game for 10 full minutes to review something that happened way before that doesn't matter at all?! And not even tell anyone, so as to suck all the momentum out of the Habs. And the first 'goal' clearly didn't go in so you just start to think that it was a call from Bettman himself giving instructions (don't worry, this is intentionally paranoid and only slightly really what I think).

My friend who hates the Habs and has 5 Caps in his pool was texting me and by the end of the game he was scream-texting that the fix was in.

Anyway, the Habs didn't lose because of the refs, they should be able to prevail with a 4-1 lead regardless. But it makes it very hard to stay focused when you know you'll get penalized for checking (Gill) while your goalie can be shuffled around like a curling rock. Hopefully they will use this as inspiration for next game. The fans in Montreal won't stand for it in any event.

WV: reberf. The Habs need to have a reberf before Monday.

Worst officiating I've seen in a long time! What a fucking joke this is. Are the refs calling Bettman's office or the replay booth I wonder?!

Robert,

Are you sure that's a good idea? She might learn some unfortunate things from this here blog. ;)

Yeah, I was wondering about Knuble and Poti, but really, how do you hack up a three-goal lead after playing 38 minutes of near-textbook road hockey? Jeezuz.

Chenny13 said...

What about the missed high stick on Markov right before the Caps equalized with under 2 minutes left? No one's mentioning that and I thought that would have made people equally livid.

Seriously felt like the refs just wanted to hand the game to the Caps. Guess we know who the league is pulling for in this matchup...

Number31 said...

Missed high sticks happen all the time as aggravating as it is, especially the nasty bloody ones (like when Dagger got his face speared by Avery's stick in front of the ref to no call) but the Poti glomp on Jaro was beyond rediculous.

orangeman said...

Let's be clear here, beyond the refs picking up the puck and throwing it behind Halak they can't lose the game for the Habs. They can, and did, make it difficult, though. In my mind it was the ridiculous huge delay after the 4th goal that signaled the beginning of the end. Habs had all the momentum, crowd taken out, Caps tired and running around. They killed that moment for the Habs, gave the fans a reason to get into (disallowed previous goal that didn't matter) and calmed the Cap players down. Really, why even replay it, and even doing so shouldn't have taken longer than 1 minute. It clearly, obviously didn't go it. Yet it took what, 10 minutes?

To quote myself, ridiculous.

And also to quote myself, 5 game series with MTL home advantage and already one of their goalies chased.

orangeman said...

By the way, love the tag on this.

Grrrreg said...

I'm very frustrated and annoyed at this loss, but let's not turn FHF into a paranoid red wings blog. There is no conspiracy, just some bad decisions by the refs.

(And by the way the long delay when the 4th goal was reviewed can't really be blamed on the refs, it's not them watching the videos)

It really stings to be back home 1-1 instead of 2-0, but the habs proved again they can play against the Caps. This will be a long series. It's not like Montreal was going to sweep the Caps anyway. Game 3 is going to be huge. With a win, the Habs get the momentum back and everything is possible again.

Orangeman said...

Greg, not blaming the refs, per se, on the 4th goal review just the process. The Toronto boys already had, what, 4-5 mins to review it before the actual goal? Then another 10? Again, ridiculous.

I will never blame the outcome of a game on the refs, but since Saku's on-ice laser-eye surgery via a Cane's stick a few years back plus non-stop proof from playoff series since (not just against the Habs, but any established team benefitting Southern/bandwagon teams) I'm not just going to walk away from it either.

It just takes a few horribly obvious bad calls to call into question the game as a whole, and that's what bothers me most. As much as I love the Habs I love hockey and I hate to see it's integrity ruined by Bettman and other business interests.

Orangeman said...

That last post was horribly written, especially by an English teacher. I have no excuse except that I've spent the day viloently vacuuming and cleaning.

Just thinking about that Ovechkin goal makes me completely livid. Throw in the fact he straight up punched Gionta near the end makes it worse. Throw in the unbelievably bad reffing. Jaro's glove hand.

Ugh. It should be 2-0. We know it. They know it. The NHL knows it.

I just want the Habs to win this series more than ever. I wish I were in Montreal so bad right now.

What a frustrating game. I hate Ovie more than ever. One thing is for sure, cast your minds back to the Habs in 2008. The eighth seeded Bruins gave us a hell of a time and took it to a game seven. Even if the Caps win this series, it doesn't bode well for them down the stretch. If we can't take them out, I'm praying that the Pens do.

bea.habs.fan said...

everybody I know is starting to bitch about the quality of the reffing - and it's league wide.
Didn't the Avs just made some sort of complaint after their game 2?

I think the reffing should be independent of the league like in every other sport. I know they are human and that unconsciously they might favor the higher rank team but seriously they have no business listening to that troll Bettman

Young HF29 said...

Morning everyone! who's in hell?

I gave you a screen cap Panger. Enjoy!

The interference I can live with (well no, but whatever). I'm with orangemean - the 10 minute phone call for no reason I cannot live with. That was way worse imho

Le Douze said...

For me it was the part where Poti sat on Jaro that made me wonder what the Caps would need to do to be called.

But it was an exciting game, even if the Caps finally wore the guys down a bit nearer the end.

Goal support! Woo hoo, baby! Now all we need is for Jaro to play like the franchise saviour we've been looking for.

@grrrrreg.
pointing out that "home office" or "big brother" was watching the goal could do more to fuel the fire!!!
Shitty Shitty Shitty that we lost. Refs suck. Almost all of them in any sport.
We did however lose. They had a 3 goal lead and lost in the last half of the final period. That sucked. That is also the Caps game. score in bunches and eek one out.
Win you FUCKERS.

I think I have a patented "Red Wings Fan Tinfoil(but actually aluminum) Hat" you can borrow. ;)

But yes, the officiating has been a step down from putrid all over the league this playoffs. In game one of the Detroit-Phoenix series an obvious high-stick was missed on Nick Lidstrom - right in the middle of the ice, the puck was there so the refs should have been looking in that direction, no one else was obstructing the view - and they missed it completely, and then told him that it was a teammate's stick that hit him. A teammate who wasn't even close.

Just one of many. I don't see why even the worst hockey players are expected to work to improve some or they lose their jobs, but officials just keep getting worse and worse. Are there really that few competent officials that the league has expanded beyond it's ability to adequately call games, or what?

So aggravating. :(

I thought the Kings - Nucks game also had a lot of goalie interference.

This league is a joke, but we knew that.

I'm glad Washington gets handed the Cup this year after the Pens got it last year. Why? Cause after the Refs, Buttman and whoever else makes their billions by selling out this sport retires, runs off or gets driven out, maybe we can get back to some honest game playing. The sooner they finish whoring out this sport the sooner the true players and athletes can hose themselves off and get on with the SPORT and not the fucking BUSINESS of hockey. I really hope security has to be heightened for the blind, deaf and dumb refs in Montreal. They should be feeling the fear. If there's no conspiracy, then there's still an excellent argument for stupidity and incompetence, in which case they should be fired. What's the qualifier for being a ref in the NHL? Kindergarten degree?

Sorry, no disrespect intended to kids in Kindergarten. Obviously they're much smarter than these refs.

Why are there fucktards from other teams posting on here? Sure I might read another team's blog for shits and giggles but I'm not about to waste my time trying to interact with them.

If you are a Canadian team, good luck thinking you are going to advance to the main dance in the Buttman World of Hockey...THOU SHALL NOT PASS!!! FUCK YOU REFS AND FUCK YOU BUTTMAN!!! If the Habs lose this series due to reffing like this, the Richard Riot is going to look like a campfire sing-a-long. I can hear Fucktard....I mean Bettman....calling for extra security for the refs in Montreal already.

iRiRi said...

Ugh. Last night hurt.
Agree with mostly everything that's already been said in the thread. Another blatant call they missed was right after they scored that 5th goal, some bastard Caps player high-sticked Markov with no call. Cut to the Caps getting the next PP two seconds later. Fuck you refs. Then again, would we really be so angry if they knew how to protect a lead? I mean, they were up 4 to fucking 1. Sigh.

And you just KNOW that the Habs are going to get called the second they try this shit on Monday. Wait, are any of the little people even capable of crashing the crease that bad? I mean, really how much harm can Gio do? (I kid)

Also, WTF was Gomez thinking asking Poti to go?

GoldenGirl11 said...

Hockey aside, shouldn't it be pronounced nuble? Why is the 'k' silent in words like knock and know but not in a name? I find it annoying just like his big fat ass in Halak's face. I mean Halakn's face.

DrunkenCousin said...

Golden Girl, I think he and Fred Knipscheer made a pact saying their names would be pronounced that way...

GoldenGirl11 said...

@Drunken
Makes sense. Either way I really want to punch him right in the knubles until he zelepukins.

Bobomite said...

Knuble has made a career of going to the net. I think he knows what he is doing.

Number31 said...

K-Nuble loves goalies like Jaro. Easy to bother, too small to see around his fat ass. Chocula needs to start playing Rhino, Gill can't be out there clearing the crease forever.

Boudreau has more things to worry about though, like, oh say, having to come behind against a so-called defensive team of smurfs.

By the way, my love of Hal Gill just increased tenfold. The man wears a letter for a reason.

I'm currently watching Carbo suck the hopes/dreams out of the undrafted U18 kids. I TOLD YOU NOT TO HIRE HIM!

Anonymous said...

Stop whining about the Knuble screen. He didn't touch the goalie without being pushed by the defenseman.

iRiRi said...

Yeah and Jaro dragged himself out of the crease earlier too

Unknown said...

@ Anon
If you watch the video, the goal is already in the net by the time the D pushes him, and as you can see in the screenshot a) His ass is clearly pushing Halak's chest b) His right leg is impeding Halak's right pad. Hell, even the Washington play-by-play guy admitted it was goalie interference before backtracking and making the homer call.

While we're on the subject, howzabout Varlamov pushing his goal off the moorings during a Habs powerplay? Or all the late hits all game long? I think I might be able to live with the Knuble goal, maybe (provided that the refs let Andrei, Pouliot, and Darche go to town on Varlamov in Montreal... hah, yeah, that'll happen), and the Poti tackle on Jaro didn't end up doing any damage (speaking of which, why is a DEFENSEMAN tackling the goalie in the crease?!), but Jesus Christ, refs, I'm pretty sure "finishing a hit" means you have to start a hit when a guy has the puck. What the fuck was that last night? I think I saw more of Ovechkin's forearm to the face than his shot.

Let the pools begin on what comes next - a disallowed Montreal goal? Or an offside goal Ă  la Kessel for the Caps?

On the positive side, I just can't decide who I want for captain. Do we go with Gionta, who took down Ovechkin a few times last night? Gill, who'll do anything to defend the zone? Gorges, who probably got to third base with the boards behind our net? Spacek, who played like the second coming of Eric Desjardins last night?

GoldenGirl11 said...

Gill has been huge as a leader. He throws himself in front of anything. Reminds me of Carbo in front of the net. Gill's heart is as big as his feet which means his... never mind.

I say Gionta, because he punched ovechkin first.

And then I'm gonna with a disallowed goal because the refs can't make that Kessel mistake twice, right? Ah who am I kidding. Both of course!

Oleg Petrov said...

Ref influence may have helped the Caps comeback along, but I think the real problem is that no ref help is needed for the Habs to blow a fresh 1-goal lead in the last five minutes of the game - to the Caps, or anyone else, for that matter. From the pattern we've seen in the last month and a half, you knew there was no way that 5th goal was going to stand up for the win.

Vicendum said...

It wasn't just Mike Knuble. There was Alexander Ovechkin poking the puck home after Jaroslav Halak had it covered (I've seen "freezings" called on similar plays before). Then there was Hal Gill whistled for interference despite the fact Gill hit the player just as the attacker released the puck (which is not interference). Mike Cammalleri was also spun around on a hook that went unnoticed, as did a high stick on Andrei Markov with two minutes left (with Montreal still up 5-4). The amount of calls really leads me to believe the refs helped the Capitals along, and I just hope the series doesn't turn on this game.

It's not the fact that we lost the game that sent me into a mini-funk today, it's the WAY we lost it.

Fuck all of this bullshit about being a homer/whiny/whatevs: YOU'RE DAMNED RIGHT I'M GOING TO BITCH ABOUT A FUCKING REFFING CONSPIRACY.

Same thing happened in EVERY. SINGLE. PENS. series last year. The go down 2-0 and then, ooh, lookie, the refs start turning a blind eye to an interference play that fast became the cornerstone of the Pens' offensive breakout system.

I guess that the blind eye extends to goaltender interference this year. Which helps a big team that likes to bang in front of the net and fucks up a team that doesn't.

Two teams that really crash the nets, hard, with borderline dirty plays: Pens and Caps.

And don't get me fucking started on the bullshit momentum-breaking pause after our 4th goal.

And the head-explosion that was Varlamov INTENTIONALLY PUSHING his net off its moorings.

You can whine and say "yes, but the Habs could have put their foot down and held on to the 1 goal lead at 5-4."

To which I say: have you EVER fucking played a subjectively reffed sport at a competitive level? Inconsistent reffing gets in your head, trust me. You start to play tentatively, not sure what is/isn't going to be called. And it's fucking demoralizing.

So the loss became inevitable after the Caps got their second goal, IMHO. I saw it coming.

Mr.LG77 sez that he's done with hockey if this shit continues to happen. He's done it before, and I have no doubt he'll do it again. I may just fucking join him this time...
