Andrei Markov will take some time out from knee-rehabbing tomorrow to become a Canadian citizen. For once my experience as an immigration lawyer comes in handy on FHF! Canadian law says that he won't have to give up his Russian citizenship, he can be both. Of course, I don't know what Russian law says, but I'm guessing with a few rubles, you can do what the fuck you want.
I'd like to say that this is awesome and he's doing it because he loves Canada and wants to show how much he appreciates it here, but it's probably for tax reasons.

Does Rupert Murdoch know about these tax breaks? Money before loyality
I'm no lawyer but becoming a Canadian citizen to be able to pay 50% tax? Sounds like he's getting ready to bolt.
Avtsin signed a three year deal today too. Bring on the Ruskies.
Maybe that showing of giant beavers and giant lumberjacks and dancing Mounties and a lounge lizard version of "The Maple Leaf Forever" from the Olympics totally sold him. Who wouldn't want to become a Canadian after all that?
Rename all Canadian Vodka, Vodkov.
Baltika No.7 for everyone!
Good old Canadian boy, that Markov. Must be from one of the old settlers communities near Winnipeg with a name like that.
Not that this would or could ever happen, but could Markov have made the Canadian Olympic team? Maybe, but I'm not sure. Markov's better than Seabrook, but he was chosen because he played with Keith. Markov over Boyle, maybe?
Given that Markov is Russia's best defenseman (well, him or Gonchar), that's pretty crazy. There are at least 4 Russian forwards who would be locks to make Team Canada, (Ovie, Malkin, Kovalchuk, Datsyuk), and a few others with outside chances.
@29:
Since I also worked as an immigration lawyer, but now do a lot more employment/human rights stuff, let me say that I see your "Citizenship and Immigration Canada is the Stupidest Fucking Bureacracy you can ever Fucking Imagine" and raise you a little thing called the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Good God, what a fucking trainwreck. They're the GM Reggie Houle of government.
Da Da Canada
Breaking news! Habs will name a captain next season. Well that's just swell.
Ooh! Blog fodder. Not.
Julien BriseBois gone to the Lightning. Damn, did Yzerman make some kind of devil-pact with Holland to stay away from the Wings people? And, can he go pick the leafs carcass for a change?
I may know nothing about immigration law, but as a professional counter of beans I can point out that Markov becoming a Canadian citizen won't change his tax situation whatsoever. He's been screwed ever since he moved to Quebec.
My guess is he wanted a Canadian passport...
WV: woquedne - What I'll say when anything interesting happens in the hockey world and wakes me up still in a drunken stupor.
For those of you missing the sexy Friday picture, here's something to tide you over.
(Habs-related and everything).
Apparently Roch Carrière is joining the Canadiens. Guess it makes up for the whole Maple Leaf sweater fiasco when he was a kid.
Anything else Yzerman wants from the Habs? Fuck, may as well have been the fucking GM here already...
@GG11 - will he be responsible for designing next year's jailbird unis? or writing the tale of PK and Vodkov?
The mind boggles.
Oh, wait, not THAT Carriere! This is the one that looks like he escaped from "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"
I forgot to mention that the Goldberg piece was very fine. L'Chaim!
WV: Will TFS be a "monste" for Nos Boys cette annee?
... or Goldenburg or whatever ...
@Le12
I was debating between Roch and a crazed killer. He does have that whacky look about him.
En Français, Larry Derrière Pierre.
En Anglais, Larry Behind Goat.
way ahead of you LE12
@moeman,
In the words of Billy Connolly Larry would be smart to plant the goat at the top of a cliff. The pushback is better.
I ♥ Moey even more now that she mentioned the hilarious Billy Connolly.
Oh Pam, Montreal ain't puritanical, next time shake your fake in tOrOntO, city of bOObs.

Quotes:
"I'm a huge Carey Price fan," added Cammalleri. "I think he's incedibly talented and I'm really proud of the situation he handled this year. I expect a lot of things from him."
And Price, a restricted free agent who has not yet re-signed, will undoubtedly be under the spotlight when training camp begins in eight weeks.
"There's a lot of pressure to play well," said Cammalleri. "To the point where it's too much for one guy to shoulder. For us, we're going to do it as a group. It's not about him, it's not about one guy. It's about sharing that responsibility win or lose."

@GG11 -
Dammit, Gigi, I hate it that you are always two steps ahead of us. Here I thought I was contributing useful new information to the FHF family, only to discover that I'm the one that was late to the party. And to think I even saw that post the first time.
Anyway, keep up the good work, and I'll go back to my hole.

A comment based on personal experience, ANY bureaucracy in Canada is child's play when having to deal with bureaucracy in communist countries, try registering a company in China or waiting on line in Cuba, going postal comes to mind...
