Au revoir, mon capitaine

Lap dance to Sonia who put this in the comments yesterday. It made mom of HF29 cry. Everyone should watch.

Mom of LG77 saw it last night and cried too.

I pass by the big picture of Koivu on the side of the Bell Centre every day when I leave work. It hurts to look at it.

If you haven't had the chance yet, go read Stubbs' feature piece over at the Gazoo (and HI/O) and Boone's farewell to Saku. Really good stuff.

God, this is really getting to me! Maybe my wedding prep really is turning me into a girl...

LG,

I saw your post yesterday about buying a Duck's Koivu jersey. I like that idea. My sister lives in L.A., I would bet they're cheaper there. Maybe she can get us a deal. The Team 990 is doing a full tribute on Melnick this afternoon. I'll be in the backyard with my big box of tissues.

I seriously will buy a Ducks jersey and wear it with pride the next time the Ducks are in town!!

I'm actually kind of tempted to head down to the store at the Bell Centre today to see what kind of merch is left on the shelves (probably nothing).

Damn... really sad now

kiittää te ajaksi muisto- Saku. Te toivoisin olevani arvoluokka esiintyä.

Ouch. La Presse can't even throw a picture of Koivu onto the front page, with some fucking cyclist getting a picture instead.

Gazette's got a decent sized thing on their front page and we're not even going to talk about the scabs at the other paper.

On an unrelated note, anyone think we need a glossary around here? I've noticed some people asking about stuff like Cube and TFS recently.

Beautiful. Even as a fan of the Leafs, Koivu is deserving of crazy respect. He represented your franchise with great pride and professionalism. A solid captain.

I'll never forgive Bob for this one. And this is coming from someone who is ... was ... a very strong supporter of the General Manager.

Unforgivable. What he did to Saku - unforgivable.

Yep... We'll miss him. I really hope he has a good time in Cali.

I feel ashamed of the business of hockey tonight. Love the sport, hate the dealings. I still can't be mad at Bob though. When he was sent to the hospital with an injury in the mid-80s, he had himself wheeled around to visit all the old ladies like my granny who, being Scottish and snobbish, had no idea who he was but was still wise enough to get me a signed picture. A ten year old's dream come true...

A phrase you will never hear:

"Ah yes, the Business of hockey! It captivated me with its power, grace and skill when I was a little kid, and I've been an avid fan since",

Well, I didn't cry, but I re-watched his return from cancer and the 8 minute standing O. That still gives me chills and a lump in the throat.

God bless Saku.

Oh, I was listening to the evening DJ on the local radio last night doing sports:

"...and Saku....(really long pause)...Novu?(in a quesioning tone) is a member of the Anaheim Ducks."

That'll get confusing.

Found this little gem on youtube.

I'll miss Saku.

This blog has been more fucking brilliant than usual the last couple days. Thanks for that.

Fuck, I'm gonna miss him.

I, too, will be cheering for the Ducks after Montreal loses in the first round.

@SSHF: Guess we know why he wasn't resigned.

I'm just realizing now that I might have been at Koivu's last great game for the Habs. In was early in April and they were in Toronto playing the Leafs. I was selling 50/50 tickets as a volunteer which meant that I watched the first two periods on television and the third period from standing room on the top deck. Before the game and in the first people kept betting me that the Leafs were going to run away with it.
We killed them of course and it was all thanks to the big line. It was probably the best game they had during the run they had towards the end of the season. We lost Markov which kind of put the nail in the coffin of our season but Koivu and co looked like they were absolutely toying with the Leafs for that third period.

I miss Saku already. He was a class act. He was a selfless humanitarian. He was a great Habs Captain.

There goes my Hab hero.

My condolences FHF and Habs fans. Koivu is one of my faves. While I'll keep up on the Habs just because I love visiting over here, it won't be the same without Captain K.

Robin Williams as our Captain?

if this team that Babs assembled has any kind of success, I will probably be thinking, "I wish Saku was here." I miss him already and i'll cry like a baby if they ever retire his number.

Truly a class act.

Wedding preparation doesn't turn women into girls - it just turns them into emotional wrecks and stark raving mad lunatics.

There's a difference. :)

Baroque: +1. I snorted my coffee at that.

So. true. *sob*

@LG77: When's the wedding? Regardless, congratulations.

I'm a Leafs fan but always appreciated the class and determination of Saku. It was sad the way they handled him. Even if he was no longer part of the plans he deserved a better send off. Great video.

missed this ystdy...amazing stuff. can't say anything that hasn't been said already...just agree with everyone that he was a truly classy individual and he deserved a better.

I think the best praise I can give to Koivu as a Leaf fan is he always worried me in the Leafs zone...

It was like he had the puck on a string...
