TMS regrets to inform you that the Habs' Coach of the Future will be Tampa's Coach of the Present

Well, you can forget about that dream you've had of Bulldogs' coach Guy Boucher taking over from Count Chokula any time soon. Multiple sources last night reported that Boucher will accept the job of head coach of the Lightning today. Apparently rejecting the BJ's offer yesterday was just step one in his devious plan to take over the NHL. Well played, Guy.

Boucher goes to a team that has a young star in Stamkos, established stars in Vinny and St Louis, a new GM (Yzerman) who should be pretty good, and a team that generally underachieved last year. Fuck, anyone would take that job. And according to Rue Frontenac he's taking Hamilton assistants Martin Raymond and Daniel Lacroix with him.

So to sum up, in that reactionary way Habs fans are famous for, the Canadiens organization is fucked for years to come. Good morning!

Maybe The Goat can wrap up the future with a Price+Subban+Leblanc for Lecavalier deal.

Maudit Mardi de Merde.

J.T. said...

@moe: No, no, no. Not Leblanc. He's bilingual. It'll be Price, Subban, a re-signed Pleks, Danny Kristo and firsts this year and next for Vinny. Bring home that superstar, Pierre!

I swear to God, if Vincent Lecavalier ever plays for the Habs in this lifetime, it will not be worth whatever it takes to get him and I will hand in my Habs Fan Club membership card.

what a depressing thing to read first thing in the morning.

I guess we're stuck with "the system" whatever it may be. Just because it seemed to work for 2 rounds does not mean ... squat.

Unknown said...

Hey, this exact same thing happened with the Bruins and Scott Gordon a year or two ago, he started coaching a young team loaded with (some) talent in the Islanders.

Here's hoping it worked out better for us than it does for you.

Hellloooooooo offseason...sigh...

Smacking head repeatedly against the wall.

Worst. News. Ever.

Never underestimate what buttons Guy Boucher can push to bring out the best in his players. Also, I fear what he can do with a puck moving goaltender like Mike Smith (assuming he figures out which black dot is the puck now) to integrate that in his forward system.

This could have been ours... We have a puck moving goalie, have stocked up on puck moving defenceman, his attack attack attack system would have been perfect for Cammy, Gio, Gomez and company, hell even the bottom two lines would have found a sure role to provide way more energy and a bit more offence. But nooooo we get to become the Montreal Senators. Yay... And in four years if he finds his way back to Montreal, I only hope the young prospects we had for him don't get too fucked.

I wonder if the Habs will get Coach SweaterVest of the Voltigeurs to replace him, considering he already replaced him there and uses a similar system...

GoldenGirl11 said...

@JT
Personally I think it'll work out just fine. Gauthier will trade the next non-francophone captain - Gionta, Gorges, Gill, Markov, or maybe all of them - and Lecavalier's homecoming will be brilliant. The ice will be black with just the name Vincent spinning in lights as the superstar himself steps onto the ice. Hopefully he won't trip on his walker. That would just be embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

People - your dropping a load over an AHl coach. get some perspective.

Sure he shows promise but have we not had enough rookie coaches around here?

GoldenGirl11 said...

@Anon
If the Canadiens were like every other team you would be 100% right but the problem remains that in this city it's french first. If Boucher had been an AHL winner last summer he'd probably be behind the bench rather than JM. It's not often that the best coach actually speaks french.

J.T. said...

@GG11: Hey, if Aurel Joliat could lace 'em up at the Forum when he was 80-some-odd years old and only fall twice (once was on the red carpet...not his fault), bashing his baseball-capped head on the ice a mere ONE time, we know Vinny can do it too. If we're patient, he'll be a Hab someday. He's only signed at ten million bucks a year until he's ninety.

I think fireworks must be part of the homecoming, though. The swirling name on the ice is a nice start, but there should be red, white and blue fireworks spewing from a huge golden torch carried by Guy Lafleur, who'll be suspended from the rafters wearing a Vinny sweater. The sweater will have no number, however, because the second part of the ceremony will include Jean Beliveau (yes, he's still alive then...I refuse to believe he won't be) dramatically pulling off his number-four jersey to reveal a 44 underneath as he hands the number four to Lecavalier.

In heaven, the Rocket, Gumper, Boom Boom, Harvey, Plante, Fergie, Doug Wickenheiser and Bunny Larocque will dance with joy to see Fate finally fulfilled.

GoldenGirl11 said...

@JT
You forgot the part where all of the remaining non french speaking players leave the ice as they are deservingly booed and the movie short broadcast on the jumbotron of Saku committing harry caray as he looks into the camera with poetic reflection "Je donnerais mon bras gauche pour un poutine maintenant".

L Dude said...

What's really gonna suck is in three years when Tampa Bay gets moved to Quebec City. Bah, whatever. Wish him the best (well, second best...no, actually third best, since second best would be losing the cup finals which would mean no Habs, so yeah wishing him 3rd best).

One more year of the count, then Captain Kirk takes over. It's OK. I'm working on a chip. You speak english into a microphone and it comes out french through the speakers. Also works vice-versa. Sounds sci-fi-ish, but it can't be that difficult. Then the whole speaking french thing should never be an issue. The Habs dynasty will return. I'm calling this new chip 'equingoo'. No reason except it's my WV and it looks like a cool word.

J.T. said...

@GG: The video portion shall also feature a black-and-white montage of anglo/Euro-led failure from the last twenty years. Just as we're all about to cry, it will end with a golden light dawning out of Vinny's back passage and spreading gently over the smiling faces of Gauthier, Boivin, Martin and the seven kids from the Q the team will draft this year. The monochrome images of Saku, Price, Higgins, Komisarek, Kovalev, Hackett, Muller, Keane, Samsonov (okay, he deserves it) et al will dissolve like sugar cubes as Vinny's light shines on a glowing CH perched jauntily in the bowl of the Stanley Cup.

Christopher Sama said...

@ldude - consider me an investor! not with money, because i don't have any, but with ample amounts of enthusiasm.

if stephen hawking's wheelchair can speak for him, then why can't kirk's tie translate for him?

stevie y making moves.
coached by a creative guy who knows how to get the most from players.
vinny, st-louis, malone, stamkos, hedman, downie... they've got a lot of good pieces.

need some defensive depth (hey, you guys want spatch and hamr?) and maybe a goalie upgrade and they're legit.

stevie y is smart enough to make all of the right moves this summer too.

Chester said...

I appreciate that Guy did well in Hamliton, but that is a long way from dealing with the shit associated with superstars and other head cases in the NHL. With the Bulldogs you have a bunch of young keeners who would give their left nut to get to the show, being there is somewhat different. I see him coming home in a few years .... ya thats it ..... in a few years.

Mr. natural said...

First PHucken' realx everyone!!

@Chester, agree. kids with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads Vs the likes of AK27 and AK47, PHat PHucks with no heart.

...and next to that CH will be his dentures and a bottle of Viagra which he forgot about during a really awkward senior moment. VIVE L'ERECTION LIBRE! he will say as he thinks he is filming an advertisment for the club sponsor as the Bell Centre errupts will thunderous applause which Vinny never hears as he has turned off his hearing aid for the night.

dwgs said...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the best thing that could happen to the Canadiens is Quebec getting a team back, preferably a strong one.

GoldenGirl11 said...

Just read Boucher's bio. He has almost as many degrees as HF29. He also has a son named Vincent. Apparently that's what clinched the deal in Tampa. No coach in Montreal was prepared to adopt Lecavalier what with his $250,000 weekly allowance and he constant texting at the dinner table.

He also has twin daughters, Martin and Stamkos.

Christopher Sama said...

@dwgs - i agree more than 100%. the habs are playing inside a pressure cooker inside a nuclear reactor underneath an electron microscope.

a team in the QC would do more for us than getting a superstar center or the coach of the future.

Nordiques 2.0 would immediately reduce the amount of pressure on the Habs. Two teams = half the pressure.

More importantly, the language debate would be greatly diffused. Bert Raymond and le gang can pin their cultural identity to le vrai equipe Quebecoise.

Maybe we could actually hire the best coaching staff available and not get hung up about our lack of French players.

Maybe then guys like Briere wouldn't turn us down before the offer is even out of our mouth.

It's one thing to put so much pressure on your team to win the Stanley Cup but ridiculous to tie your cultural hopes and dreams to it as well.

wv: Guy Boucher stays in shape by doing kalate three times a week.

dwgs said...

That's an interesting way of looking at it Mr T.
I was coming at it from another angle, that the competition from within Qc would give the habs a push to stay ahead.

Howard said...

We're PHucked!!! We had a chance to get Yzerman and we went for the Goat instead. Had a chance to get Boucher but we're stuck with Chokula for 3 more years! I think I may commit to cyrogenics. Wake me up in 2014! I had a dream that if I was David Molson I would have fired the whole org from Boivin on down for this crap. Molson is turning out to be quite emasculating as an owner. How can anyone turn a blind eye to all this shizz???

Unknown said...

Not sure why Boucher would ever come back to the Habs if he achieves any degree of success, which is likely. Why quit if you're winning? If it all goes wrong somehow and his system sucks and he gets fired, do the Habs really want Tampa Bay's cast off failure coach?

Fuck you Boucher, for not waiting it out, and I hope your fucking system tanks in Tampa Bay. Also, fuck you Steve Yzerman, cause this shit is your fault. Also, fuck you Gautier, for letting this shit happen, and fuck you and Gainey both for saddling us with JM for years to come.

Feeling the hate today.

kevincrumbs said...

Uh, not to be the voice of reason here but exactly what has Yzerman accomplished as a GM type? Is it just Team Canada at the Olympics? I'm sorry, with that talent level, many people could've done the same thing.

Also, let's not get all suicidal over Guy Boucher leaving. In the NHL, one minute you're a golden god and the next you're a loser scumbag who knows nothing about hockey.

Things'll be fine, people.

Steve said...

But he does not look like a cartoon character, likely he does not like the smell of PP specialist either. Hey at least we are not the Leafs.

L Dude said...

So, does Muller go to Hamilton? Probably more to gain than yet another year under the Count's cloak. Then again, maybe closer to the show is better.

We should hire Doug Gilmour for Hamilton. Just because it might piss off leaf fans.

Anyway. WV. Gotta go get me some fizwater. I kid you not.

moeman said...

"According to RDS, Habs assistant coach Perry Pearn will be leaving the Habs to become the head coach of the Edmonton Oil Kings (Junior team)."

Chester said...

HEY ... do we get some compensation for the scooping of Boucher. You know like a player to be named later or some effin thing like that.

Also, it's been days without boobs WTF ...

Kate said...

Alright people, just relax for Christ sake. If Boucher coached the Habs this season and they sucked all we would hear and read is not only do the Habs systematically destroy and suck the soul right out of all the young up and coming talent *rolls eyes* but now is bent on destroying young rookie coaches. Spare me.

Let Boucher have his teething pains with Tampa Bay. Let's at least give Martin another season before judging him. He had a brand new team, a ton of injuries to cope with and he still managed to get them to the conference finals, better than any other coach has managed in the last 17 years.

J.T. said...

@moe: Funny thing the only Habs coach nobody wants is Jacques Martin.

b said...

Don't forget Carbo is still under contract. His system worked, some of his players did not. He had to cope with the Byelorussian's, the Russian superstar, an aging Finn, and the pressure to play Price. The system was fluid and did not give up as many odd man rushes as last year.
Granted they didn't make it to the conference final, but he didn't have Halak in the net.

I'm wondering who Coach Boucher will poach out of the Habs system.

I'm thinking a goalie...

There will be no Lecavalier to Montreal deal, but I heard some scuttlebutt last winter from an amateur scout that St. Louis was interested in signing with Montreal when his current contract runs out. Just what they need, another pint sized forward.

Number31 said...

Perry Pearn, he of the continuous use of the Hamr/Bergeron pairing and an unimaginative powerplay that had difficulties adapting to certain situations, going to the Oil Kings sounds like a smidge of somewhat better news......

Le Douze said...

@GG - a sheynem dank, I'm very relieved. And I'm sure your Mamah's brisket is very tasty (not to mention yours).

Belated kudos for the latest Pantscast, guys, and especially LG77. As a certified misanthropist I normally refuse to actually listen to others' opinions (reading them is all I can usually take), but you managed to hold my interest all the way through. (Or was it the pictures of Ksena in the bath I was looking at while you were talking? Anyway...) It's good that you got someone in this time who actually knows something about hockey to back up their opinions. LG77, have you ever considered moonlighting as a TV sportsbabe? (Though I'm not sure that actually sports knowledge is always required for that position).

Unknown said...

@ Le Douze: For the record, GG11 played Mats Sundin to my Bob Gainey about halfway through the season. Give her high marks for loyalty.

Le Douze said...

@Mike - Did you need to trade any sulky Belarussian centers to HF29 to get permission to talk to her? Anyway, as long as she doesn't suddenly decamp to PuckDaddy (or worse, Pension Plan Puppets) and then after a uneven season announce she's leaving PhotoCHopping to practice Talmudic law, I guess I'm happy.

'Sides, I don't think that GG11's magic touch would survive the confines of the HI/O "system". She needs to be on a team where she's allowed to be offensive all the time.

Unknown said...

@Le Douze Permission? I don't need no steenkin' permission. But you're right: the parameters of HIO might have cramped her style. Tamer act, but a MUCH bigger room.

Young HF29 said...

GoldenGirl11 said...

all you have to say is Price/Halak and the debacle starts and the "numbers" go up. Kinda like Celine Dion making another remix of the Titanic song to make some more $.

Unknown said...

@HF29: That wasn't a little dig, it was a big dig. I''m just bitter because GG11 spurned my overtures. HIO publishes the numbers because we are a filthy capitalist enterprise that strives to boost ad revenue. Better sound in the untainted coffee house? Perhaps so. Bob Dylan once played the Finjan on Stanley St.

Le Douze said...

Here's how I judge:
FHF = funny
HIO = risible

I was also thinking about Celine Dion in the context of boonie's comments ... Is it better to abandon your home and make big bucks selling your soul in Vegas, or to stay at home, poor, in a bitter little incestuous ... wait a minute, that didn't come out right...

Arrghh! GG, please don't leave us!! If you want bigger, don't go HIO, just sneak downstairs at the Bell Centre and hang around the players' exit. (I'm sure LG77 could give you a few tips).

Unless you guys offer and actually follow through with free ice cream at a preset number of comments for game threads. If so, I'm fuckin' outta here. I'll get me a cute live squirrel. How can the people hate that eh?! Squirrels are in. See Ice Age (Scrat), Over the Hedge (Hammie "but I like the cookie."), and there was a really good animated movie a few years back - the squirrel was high all the time (like squirrels tend to be).

I'm off track. WTF was I talkin' about. What day is it? June 9th? Fuck.

GoldenGirl11 said...

17 years ago today i was freaking out at brother of GG's Princeton graduation as DrGG had gotten tickets to the game and if everything was on time I could make it to the forum with about a half hour to spare. In Newark airport it started to rain, the flight was delayed, the pilot kept us up to speed (re: the game) and we landed with very little time to spare. I ran to customs only to find - to my horror - a plane load from israel had landed just before us. I somehow worked up the chutzpah to go to the front of the line and tell my sob story to a lovely religious lady with about 19 kids. She let me in, there was a near riot in line and I made it for the anthem. Kirk scored the winning goal which solidified my love for him. Thanks for those tickets, Dr. Asswad. I love June 9.

Congrats Hawks.

Congratulations to the Chicago BlackHawks. Great season, great Stanley Cup run. Well deserved champions.

Note to Hawks,

Get the hell out of there as quickly as possible, before they steal the engines off your plane.

The stunned silence was beautiful.

WOOOOOO!

I'm not gonna lie, I took a little, okay a lot, of pleasure in hearing the complete silence in Wachovia when the Hawks scored.

Kane just said "holy crap" on NBC. good thing no one's watching in the States or that would be trouble

CBC is just pissed that the Laffs will now be the team with the longest drought. Even TSN has been pulling for the Phlyers the whole time. I don't really know if that's the reason, or they just prefer goon hockey, but if I was going on either of these two sources I would swear Pronger, with a bit of help from Carter and Richards, are the only guys playing these games.

Anyway, congrats to Chicago. Well deserved. Proving once again the way to make it in the new NHL is to tank a few seasons. Just sayin'.

Watching CBC you clearly heard "We won the fucking cup, we won the fucking cup." during the first on ice shot.

cbc/hnic are not hockey fans, they are leaf fans.

I think Kane should get to beat up all the cabbies he wants for that goal.

Did Pronger bother picking up that puck? I would love if the answer is yes, so that all those people talking about him doing that to put the other team off its game - rather than just being the fat bully in grade 6 - can shut up.
