The Game Day Skate for Tuesday, November 13th

Bullet points for what you missed while having nightmares of breaking the rushing record one week then tearing your lateral collateral ligament the next...

Leafs tonight. If we lose I may be physically ill.

Me and my friend got into an argument about Mike Komisarek a while back where he said that he and Markov were two potential Norris winners.

I disagreed for Mike while Andrei will need some help but very well be nominated at least.

My argument against Mike revolved around his TOTAL lack of offensive upside. His answer was that Mike could dominate so much in every other facet of defensive game that it could make his lack of offensive production less important.

And I must say he was right, to a certain point. Big Mike his first for hits (and can lay some big Stevens-like ones) second in blocked shot and about 30th in takeaways. Of course he would need a lot more than those numbers to be considered Norris potential but I want to ask you guys:

Do you think a player like Mike could win a Norris based purely on defensive abilities or will those always be overlooked for more offensive stars?

j-f à mon avis JAMAIS. le Norris est certainement réservé pour des défenseurs qui marquent.

I don't agree with that, but that's the way it is now. defensive skills are only seen as a "plus" for a D who can get points

jean-francois, as much as I love Komisarek, I think a Norris is a pipe dream unless something drastic happens, either in the way voters pick the winner or in Komisarek's game. Scott Stevens just entered the Hall of Fame, played in 13 All Star games, won a Conn Smythe and captained 3 Cup winners. Total Norris trophies in his hall of fame career? Zero. I think the last true defensive defenceman to win was Rod Langway in the early 80's.

Does no one remember Rod Langway? Stay at home tyrpe, 2 Norris' in the 80s?

That being said, there is no way on hell Komo (or anyone else) wins a Norris without at least 50 points. There are several good, solid stay at home D-men - just not MTL for a while, and now we're all excited to have one. Love Komo, but no Norris for him.

Thanks guys. You pretty much echoed my thoughts on this as for the voting. You know, it maybe time to have two seperate awards for defensemen. They named an award to reward Bob Gainey a couple of years back, make one to give to Sheldon Souray... when he heals up...

Okay, maybe not a new award but I still hope to see the trend go back and see a player win with 6 goals, 17 pass but unbelievable numbers in blocked shots, hits, +/-, takeaways...

probably not in my life...
