Bob Gainey Hits Snooze Button Again

Habs' GM Bob Gainey, fresh off a very late evening on June 30th, has hit the snooze button once again and gone back to sleep. As anxious Habs fans wait for any sort of move from Bob, he was heard to mumble "just ten more minutes."

Though if takes 6 million per year to sign defensemen who can barely play D, and 10 million to 37-year old Swedes sitting on fences, maybe it's better he sleep in.

I keep going between "fuck, are they going to do ANYTHING!?!!!??!?" and "Fuck, at those prices, DON'T DO ANYTHING!!!!!". I have confidence that Bob won't panic and throw $30 million at Sundin or $7 million a year at someone like that thug Bertuzzi. I think.

Fuck, I'm starting to hate this time of the year.

I simply hope Bob does nothing and let all the other teams spend like crazy until Sundin finally decides he continues his career, somewhere around late august. Then the Habs will be the last contender with a bit of cap room left.

I feel I should mention Hossa has signed a one-year deal with DETROIT for 7.4 mill

Fucking DETROIT. how many players can one team have???

No panic here. Bob must be pissing himself with some of these idiotic deals.

Markov's salary is looking sweet compared to what an ex-Hab like Hainsey will be pulling in.

I don't understand how either the NYR or the Wings are operatiing within the salary cap. I'm no mathologist, so I'm not about to start bibity-bopping on my abacus to find out, though.

Is it really overpaying when the salary cap keeps going up? Obviously you can still trap yourself like Tampa Bay did but I don't think prices are going down in the near future, so why spend years (while your core guys are still young RFAs) waiting for a salary crunch that may not come? The RED WINGS just took on a big contract. I don't know how they can even keep half the guys they have. Surely Montreal can afford to take a gamble for a year or two. Not on Bertuzzi. For the love of God, I live in British Columbia, if I never hear about what Bertuzzi did again I'll be happy the rest of my life.

The Red Wings actually have some pretty dang cheap players - comparatively, anyway. Detroit has Zetterberg for one more season at about $2.9 million, Kronwall is at only $3 million, Franzen isn't that expensive yet (and has one more year in his current deal), and Datsyuk is only(!) $6.7 million cap hit per year.

Their goaltending is less than $2.5 million for both Osgood and Conklin.

It'll be tight for them to keep Filppula, though (RFA). It isn't until the season after next that they will have to worry about raises for Zetterberg, Franzen, and I think Hudler. That's the only reason Hossa could work - he took a one-year deal. Otherwise no way.
