The Morning Skate for Monday, May 4th

Bullet points for what you missed while having nightmares of a collapsing dome...
  • It's always a pretty stupid goal by an unsung hero that wins it in 3OT, eh? Jonas Hilller holds the fort for the Ducks, then Todd Marchant just lets one fly towards the net and it somehow gets past Chris Osgood, giving the Ducks a 4-3 win and evening their series at 1;
  • Cam Ward shows TFS how it should have been done, blanks the B's 4-0. Oh, did I get the score wrong? Thank the NHL, who did their best to have Boston win, thanks to a pathetic disallowed goal that was a goal;
  • Canada moves to 5-0 at the Double Eye with a win over Norway. Am I crazy or is this tournament going forever without getting to a medal round or something?
Have a good week everyone.

I bet the review officials thought if we give the goal Boston will be pissed off. If we disallow it hopefully Carolina still wins and we're off the hook.

Nonetheless, how 'bout them 'Canes!

Did anyone catch Carbo on "Tout le Monde en Parle" yesterday night? A very interesting interview - Boone has a brief summary of it over at I/O.

Carbo said that he wuold have loved to pull a Pat Burns and go drag his players out of the clubs, but he never knew where they were... and he was trying to treat them like adults.

And when asked the question about whether he would come back if Gainey was gone and if the "pommes pourris" were no longer with the Habs, he said yes. But he refused to say which ones were the "pourris" which is interesting.

The only player he defended: Price. The rest of them, he just sat there and smirked when they were being discussed, including Koivu. Again - verrry interesting...

Carbo really is a monumental asswipe.

You can tell he never liked or had faith in his players.

Gainey never attacked his players in public. Carbo did it all the time and he's still doing it. His mnotto as a coach was "it's not my fault". That's why he lost his job.

I wonder if he ever takes a break from basking in all this new-found love to wonder where all these people where when he was behind the bench.

Boob - while I don't think he's a monumental asswipe (and I'm not sure that a return behind the bench under the right conditions would be a bad thing), I totally agree with you re: fact that it was always "Me vs. the players" for Carbo. That was his biggest weakness as a coach, IMHO.

After thinking long and hard and staring at the Weekend Open Thread pic for hours, I've decided to re-sign Kovalev to a 2 year contract at 3 million per, with bonuses attached. Of course, I'm not the GM, so it means squat.

But I was checking out his stats.
He is a career 0.82 ppg player. With the Habs he's a 0.84 ppg player. Career playoffs he's a 0.85 ppg player. With the Habs, 0.94 ppg! And he was only a 0.81 ppg playoff performer pre-Habs.

Keep him. Ship out the Kostitsyns, Pleks, Koivu (I like him, but I think he may decide to move on). Give Kovy the 'C', sign some Canadian boys and see what happens.

@L Dude - your argument may be bolstered by the fact that Kovy was just named a finalist for the NHL's Community Service award

L Dude said...

@29: I just read that and thought the same thing. Not to take anything away from the other finalists, but from reading the syopsises (synopsi?) of their off-ice work, I believe Kovy deserves to win this award. He is a good person - if only he could be consistently good on the ice.

LDude - I used to think he was a selfish prick.

Now, I think that he's a very good person (even before reading about the NHL community service award). Trust me on this - the guy gives his all to his teammates.

And I would resign him over Koivu... which KILLS me, because for so long he was MySaku. He still is, but I'm begining to think that his time in Mtl is done.

I'm off to go rock myself back to happiness in the fetal position.

Carbo mentioned that he doesn't talk much to his players!! Just two days ago I was told this, from one of my sources (heheh, im glad i can say that). I'm glad he admits it. The only people he talks to are the refs and Gainey. What a fucktart. Let him rot in Minnesota.

Speaking of minnesota, apparently "MONSTER" McGuire is lined up for an interview for the GM spot. If your a wild fan, you gotta love this guy.

GO CAWKS!!

L Dude said...

@gillis: Yeah well Minny's also rumoured to be interviewing Quinn and JFJ. So there goes their credibility right out the door.

As annoying as he can be, I kind of like Maguire. I'd hire BIG HEAD BOB Mackenzie as GM over him though. Regardless of Pierre's prior experience.

Not sure if this link will work, but here's a little of what Jaro has been dealing with at the worlds:

Poor dude gets no respect anywhere he goes...

@d. - saw that on MYFO today. I am hoping our resident Jarologist sees it and makes a post out of it....

I have detected plagiarism (or at least partly) from here, to hereI bet Booner saw your title and thought it was clever so he switched up slightly.

Your lawyers, find a way to sew him

lawyergirl77 said...

^^ But I don't know how to sew... And I doubt that any of the 4HF do, either. (Although I think Panger may have made a pair of boxer shorts in Home Ec...)

oops, is it sue?

Yes - I was totally just teasing you for the typo!

Kovy and Koivu both want to stay here. The only reason IMO that Koivu won't be back is if Gainey doesn't want him back. It's not about money for either of them and that's the kind of players I want. I think in Komi's case it's show me the money. If some team wants to give him 6 mil a year, let them. Watching the Ducks Wings game yesterday it really hit home for me how God awful Komi was this season.

James said...

Moey- I watched the same game yesterday and funny enough, I have very similar thoughts. Except I was thinking more along the fact that our entire defensive unit (minus Markov) was god awful this year. And how that just can't cut it in the playoffs.
That game yesterday? The Habs against any of those 2 teams would have been drilled into oblivion. Our team defense is shit. And I don't see it getting any better of this summer...

Kate said...

@James

Exactly my thoughts, the only solution I can see is if they clone Markov since they can't sign anybody decent, we need another sold D man like him. We'll never get past the first or second round with the defense we have. The reason I'm singeling out Komo is because some team will offer him ridiculous money in spite of his rotten play. If you have a chance read my blog entry yesterday.

Whats with Cam Ward and being amazing in the playoffs? The season the Canes won the cup, he had a save % of .882 and a GAA of 3.68. Thats not very good. But in the playoffs that same year, he had a save % of .920 and his GAA was 2.14. not bad for a rookie.

He has been very mediocre since with save %'s of .897, .904 and .916 this season, which is decent. But now that there in the playoffs, he has a save % of .937 and a GAA of 2.08.

He's sort of like the opposite of price last year.
