Time to get Wild (sorry, I know that's fucking lame) - Game Preview and Open Thread

I don't know what's going on here, but it looks like fun

Waiting in line details - 8:00 P.M. (EST) start, Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul MN. I love when arenas are named after companies I've never heard of. FHF regular prairiegirlwarriorpoet is going to the game - maybe she can find out for us. This is the Habs first trip to Minny since like the North Stars played there or something. The teams have identical 6-1-1 records, after the Wild lost their first in regulation last night.

Pay your coverage charge to - Of course, we gotta shout out to Kirsten over at Land of Lakes and Hockey. As a Habs fan, she's gotta be torn tonight. Maybe she can come up with a Friday Five for us a day early.

Hot sexy Koivus to watch - Koivu, while being kept off the scoresheet for only the second time this year still managed to win the Canes game in the SO. He's got 10 points in his last 7 games. Koivu is off to his best start ever, leading the league in assists. The Koivus have faced each other twice in the past, with Koivu getting two assists in those games while Koivu has been held pointless.

And the rest - God bless Tangy, who really seems to have found the rejuvination machine after being released from Iron Mike's grip. Didn't he used to be more of a passer though? Now he's scoring goals, with 6 in 8 games. Shoutout to another Finn, Anttttti Miettttttinen who's got 10 points for the Wild.

Skank-o-rama - And herein lies the preview where we turn on Gui! Soon he'll really be dragging the line down, if he isn't already. Little Tits pointless in five. Pleks is snake bit. For the Wild, Niklas Backstrom started great this year but sucked last night and was pulled in the first period.

Line 'em up - TFS will start. The Hamr looks like he can play. No word yet on fourth line members for the evening or whether Breezer will be let out of the trunk of Panger's car.

We are making it through this entire post without mentioning Marian Gaborik -

Interesting news that I'm too fucking lazy to make its own post for - Habs I/O is reporting that studly Hamilton defenseman Pavel Valetenko has bolted for the KHL and Moscow Dynamo. In Soviet Russia, hockey league signs you!

Post-game adult entertainment establishment - head over to Minneapolis and Schiek's Palace Royal. Looks classy. Whatever you do, however, do NOT go to a place called The Strip Club. Talk about false advertising.

Let's get Wild in the comments people! (again, sorry, totally lame)

Even the Strip Club's web address is misleading, in a twisted sort of way. Bastards.

I was looking forward to Valetenko, and Yemelin. I wonder if we ever see either of them. Note to Timmins: Pick more US High School defensemen ... they'll never switch to some commie-bastard run league.

10, you make a good point. For a lot of these European kids, the idea of winning the Stanley Cup just isn't that enticing. They don't grow up dreaming of doing it, and when they could just go play in Europe for 5 times what they're currently making, it's no wonder that a bunch of them jump at the chance.

HFF33 aka Panger said...

@Fezworth - I'm not sure that your reasoning applies to all Europeans, I think Swedes and especially Finns see the Cup as the ultimate hockey prize nowawdays at least the yonng ones. It's only the Russians who still seem to have a need to be different.

What are the odds that Backstrom comes out furious and stones the crap out of the Habs?
I smell disappointment.

Number31 said...

WTF Tank?! That seems like a lame move. The way he plays, he's not gonna like sitting in the penalty box constantly over there. Just ask Yemelin. Or maybe he and Yemelin are doing a switcheroo...

Interestng how the Dogs gave him a few personal days for some family matters and then this comes out. Isn't that what Ovechkin is on now? "Seeing my ill grandfather" turns into "Signing new KHL money money money deal". Look out! How much influence does the Russian Mob have on the hockey leagues these days anyway?

Breezeby found the handle for the trunk escape, apparently.

TSN says Harding in nets for the Wild.

Ignore my last comment.

@ number31:

Our good friends Schmi and Capschick just threw up in their mouths a little thinking about Ovie.

Um, Markov's family and the Mama and Papa Tits are healthy, right?

Right?

So come on and let me knowwwww!
Should I be Joey Volchov's* Russian Ho?!

Fuck you Pavel.

Fictional Russian Mobster.

@HF10: 3 gold stars for the Mama and Papa Tits comment.

@panger: I can accept that the swedes & finns are into the Cup. Look at the numbers (using the 2006 season):

Country: n players (% of NHL)
Swedes: 45 players (4.7%)
Finns: 39 players (4.1%)
Russians: 41 players (4.3%)

We should also look at the respective populations of these countries:

Sweden : 9,031,088 (2007 est.)
Finland : 5,238,460 (2007 est.)
Russia : 141,377,752 (2007 est.)

Panger, your analysis is definitely supported by the numbers. If we assume that Swedes and Finns aren't any better at hockey than Russians, then there must be some other reason that so few Russians come to the NHL. Because the percentage of russians is WAY lower than it should be, given their huge population.

Anyway, fuck Mats Sundin.

@fezworth - that closing line gives you LOL comment honours of the season so far

It's not the worst I've ever seen. The writers for the paper and TV could really use to expand their list of bad puns they use.

Thanks for the shoutout, guys. I can't believe I forgot to make one for you FHF, but that will soon be corrected.

The Xcel Energy center is really nice. My parents are season ticket holders, but not nice enough to fly me home for the game. It's named for a local energy company, definitely a midwest thing.

im still at a family event... good thing this game starts at 8

moeman said...

Ugh.

moeman said...

Cube makes it 1-1.

moeman said...

Random thought; a Stanley Cup Finals between these two teams would be fun;

~ Koivu siblings

~ ex-Habs management on Wild

~ 100th anniversary vs. aforementioned ex-Habs

~ two great hockey cities (4 if you consider thr tri-cities)

~ speed, size, skill

~ Tabernacque vs. Boogard

~ you betcha!

moeman said...

I wonder if TurtlePlex centering/winging poonTang and Saks would be worth a try?

Bonus, tonight's biere of choice Leffe Blonde.

Call me a homer if you will...but these are some of the worst calls i have ever seen...even the refs in my adult safe hockey league would be embarassed to make these...

moeman said...

Wow! Vodkov drills one. 2-1 Habs.

Young HF29 said...

god i LOVE walking into my house, turning on the game and seeing a goal!

Young HF29 said...

PS how did the first look?

Young HF29 said...

@moeman - quality beer choice btw

moeman said...

The 1st was pretty even. Not a great display of the hock-hock but a decent period.

Looks like the refs are going to ruin another potentially good>great game.

moeman said...

So far Habs PK has been stellar. (almost typed Stella cuz some of the Belgian 12 pack of Stella+Hoe+Leffe is on my mind and in my gut).

Young HF29 said...

while i agree the PK is good, let's see if we can go one minute without taking a penalty

moeman said...

Yup, too many penalties is slowing the pace. One would think pollock was reffing.

moeman said...

Dandy musn't of heard hf29...

Young HF29 said...

well they lasted TWO minutes. well done boys!

Anonymous said...

So who wants to bet that the penalty calling will slow down if the wild score?

Young HF29 said...

my head may explode

moeman said...

heh

moeman said...

Sick PK-ing.

Young HF29 said...

talk about dodging a bullet. er, eight bullets

moeman said...

Wild is 0 for 8 on their PP. More chances coming?

Anonymous said...

I hope you all like the NBA, because that is what the NHL is becoming...everything is a foul...

moeman said...

matt might be onto something. Maybe bettman is considering a 'painted' offensive zone for goal scoring. (Aren't bettman and stern buddies/ex-colleagues?)

Young HF29 said...

oh look, a penalty. im shocked

Young HF29 said...

and as i type, an even upper

Young HF29 said...

oh breezer, how many ways can you suck on one shift

moeman said...

Clutterbuck is a cool (porn) name.

Young HF29 said...

hey i may be on meth, but i thought i heard Benoit dis Gui!

moeman said...

Someone must've slipped some meth in Brnet's meth.

moeman said...

Brunet's

moeman said...

heh, TurtlePlex farts and looks to see if the ref called it. Nope. Must've been a sweet smelling one, or a silent killer.

moeman said...

Nice PK-ing.

moeman said...

A Habs PP! Their is a God and she loves the Canadiens. Speaking of Goddesses where is lawyergirl?

Young HF29 said...

moeman LG is missed. she'll be around im sure

hold on, hold on, hold on...

moeman said...

T F S ™

Young HF29 said...

whew

TFS and the PK

Young HF29 said...

oohh nice TM superscript moeman

moeman said...

A hard fought win. Totally deserved. Fuck the fucking refs.

moeman said...

7-1-1

NHL's best W-L record. Whodathunkit? At this pace Carbo will look positiively Bowmanish. Of course, I keed, cuz we all know Ron Wilson is doing such great work down the 401, passed Ottawa and just after Oshawa and the chevrons.

moeman said...

TFS™ makes at least 1 or 2 seriously spectacular saves per game. The RDS highlight package reveals that the hype is real about his trade-markable abilities.

Heh - I just read through the comments for today's game. Thanks for the props, Moeman!

Just 'cause it can't be said enough: fuck the fucking refs, fuck. That was shit reffing, for both sides. *sigh*

Kirsten said...

I had no idea who to cheer for, but I figured I had nothing to lose, I'd just be happy whoever won. We really fucking suck at PPs. God damn.

PS, I write the Friday Fives on Thursdays...it would be a lot more interesting if I wrote a Friday Five FHF edition.
