Bienvenido Señor Gomez!

Well it appears to be true. Chris Higgins has been traded to the Rangers in return for Scott Gomez.

Finally, the overpaid undersized center we've been dreaming of.

to me this seems like Rangers are clearing cap space for a big signing

Dude is 5'11. Is this the big, skilled centre we've been waiting for?

James said...

The Rangers will be offering 6M to Jay McKee. You heard it here first people!

As for this trade, well... Kinda sucks to see Higgs go, but he was becoming more and more a good 3rd/4th liner with good leadership skills but not much else.
In return we get a legitimate first line center who's way overpaid, has a reputation for slacking off and basically no leadership whatsoever. However, he's an excellent playmaker.

Not sure what to think of this, but at least Bob did something.

Farewell Chris, except when you play the Habs.

Ian Vitro said...

Fucking GOMEZ?! Are you serious? All 5'11" and 200 lbs of him? Nice "big centre," Gainey.

Fucking hell... How is he worth $41.5M over the next 6 years? Does he come with a private jet? Gold bullion? Can he transform into a car or some shit?

Jesus Christ. If this isn't some scheme by Bob to trade Gomez to another team I'm going to be seriously pissed.

James said...

Shiiiiit now RDS is saying we gave up Ryan McDonagh, Pavel Valetenko and Doug Janik and we're getting Gomez, forward Tom Pyatt, and defenseman Michael Busto from NYR.

McDonagh and Valetenko, on top of Higgins??? Fucking fuck that's expensive!

I really don't like it as much now...

Gomez, for the record, has scored an average of one goal every five games throughout his career. So if he keeps up his average, we can expect 16 goals from him this year!

All that, and $7 million a year to boot!

Holy Fuck My French Friends!!!

Thanks for taking on Gomez and letting us get some cap space!

Thank you Montreal! Just to let you know, he's good in taking the puck up, but when he gets to the blueline he just gets lost.

wow. on paper, this looks likely to make the 10 worst trades list for the habs. i sincerely hope i'm wrong, but why we should volunteer to take on bloated contracts the rangers signed is beyond me.

@Anonymous (a.k.a - Rangers Fan)

At least have the balls to thank us properly and register a name. FUCK.

This is not a good deal, unless Pyatt and Busto turn into Crosby and Malkin???

FUCK FUCK FUCK.

You're welcome.

FUCK.

On the plus side, if Busto ever makes the team, there's a bounty of boob jokes to be made. So...there's that.

as a long-time ranger fan who's seen my team on the receiving end of deals like this, i don't really have much in the way of sympathy

however...

gomez is a brilliant skater capable of opening up the offense, which should mesh well with jacques martin's...defensive....system...

whoops....

my condolences

There is a mistake in your post guys, you wrote :

"Finally, the overpaid undersized center we've been dreaming of."

You meant "ass-rape", not "center", right? Because otherwise, this sentence doesn't make any sense to me.

I need a drink too.

Daniel Plainview said...

I actually sort of like this trade.
There I said it.

Maybe Bob is planning on trading away Plek as well, and leaving Gomez as our second line centre? Getting rid of Higgins was necessary because we sort of had a logjam when it came to wingers, I guess?

Oh god, I need a drink.

This just in! Habs sign Brüno.

seriously you guys will hate gomez. he doesn't take anything seriously. he chuckles when your team loses. the prospects you got are nothing. you guys got robbed, by one of the worst GMs in the NHL (glen sather). that makes gainey, even worse? hes a decent skater, and he shows up in the playoffs, but in the season he'll drive you insane. sorry for robbing you guys.

Billy Blue said...

I'm totally fucking disgusted with this travesty of a move. Feeling cuckolded big time.
Gainey's lost it!

You know, if this deal didn't include McDonagh (seriously, one of our better prospects), I would probably be fine with this trade.

Holy Flannel said...

A little math for everyone:

Gomez = Koivu - (leadership + courage + respect for the CH) + 1 inch + 2 Stanley Cups + $3M

I don't understand why we didn't just keep Koivu...

The last two seasons, Koivu and Gomez both scored 16 goals each, so we're not getting a better goal scorer.

You can't put a price on Koivu's courage, leadership and his familiarity with the city and the club.

Fuck this.

WV: logimick, as in:
Where is the logimick in this trade?

From Bob's Wikipedia page -
On June 30, 2009, Bob Gainey got fleeced by fellow GM Glen Sather when Sather traded Scott Gomez and his albatross contract for Chris Higgins and top prospect Ryan McDonagh. At least we got the albatros...

kevincrumbs said...

I agree with anonymous. My problem with this trade is not Higgy leaving (he probably didn't want to stay with Komi leaving... and gets to go home to the New York area) or Valentenko, who we would've never seen in a Habs uniform. I just don't like giving up McDonough for nothing. Couldn't Bob have just given him Fischer or something instead?

ARGH.

kevincrumbs said...

I also liked it a lot better when we did nothing around free agency day. This is what you get for demanding that Bob do something, people! I blame you, all of you!

Maybe Kirk can teach Bob how to hide his cell phone.

habsfan79 said...

moeman said...

Fellow and feline 4HFers, are we overrating Higgs?

Anonymous said...

Honestly, fuck Higgins, he was probably gone soon, anyways. Still, would've nice to have him go without taking a pretty damn good defensive prospect with him along with leaving us an 7-8 million contract.

South Shore Habs Fan said...

Higgins for Gomez would've been... okay. Two players who've struggled, swap teams, hope for a fresh start.

But McDonagh? WHAT THE FUCK BOB.

A fast and skilled playmaker? We already have a team full of those! I thought we were looking for a fucking goal-scorer?! You know, a guy who can score 20+ goals a season, play physical, and work the boards... LIKE FUCKING HIGGINS.

Fuck. This. SHIT. Gomez ain't gonna attract shit when it comes to UFAs, and that contract makes Briere's look good. At least Briere can fucking score every now and then.

Ugh. Martin and Gainey are trying to make us into the Devils V2.0, minus the elite defense and the world's best goaltender. Fucked, in other words. I had faith, I really did... but this move makes zero sense.

Up next: Bob trades Pleks and Subban for Jeff Finger. Just wait for it.

Young HF29 said...

this is a quality thread of argument people. i'm impressed

let me play "Devil's" advocate for a sec. anyone remember when Gomez had 80+ points for a defensive system Devils team? the season that earned him that big contract in the first place? And he hasn't even turned 30 yet.

I loved Higgy as much or more than anyone, but he was turning into a 3rd line winger. McDonagh i'm pissed about, but whatever. life goes on.

did i mention the 6 drinks ive had in the past hour?

habsfan79 said...

if you're going to pick up that much cap space why not send halak and higgy to ottawa for heatley.

Holy Flannel said...

One thing that's great about being a Habs fan is that there are so many of us.
When things go wrong (ie, all the time), we can all wallow in frustration and anger together.

It's much better than being in Sunshine, Florida where we would have to be pissed off all alone in a dark corner.

I too am not that bothered by Higgins leaving. I think he was overrated. Even trading Valentenko is acceptable. You'll all remember that his future with the Canadiens was uncertain because he wanted to play in the KHL.

But McDonagh???? He was our No. 1 prospect! Fuck BOB!

WV: angero, as in
I'm feeling a lot of angero at Bob right now.

Boob Gainey said...

It didn't look like McDonaugh was ever going to make it.

Still, that is one hell of a bad trade.

South Shore Habs Fan said...

@ habsfan79
I would hate Heatley every day of the season... but I'd love his goals. Whenever we're beating Ottawa by two goals or less with 5 minutes left to go in the third, I cringe when Heatley touches the puck.

You know... Gomez and Cammalleri have nearly the same career points-per-game (0.79 for Cammalleri, 0.82 for Gomez), age (Cammalleri is 27, Gomez is 29), and size (Cammalleri is 5'9, Gomez is 5'11). The difference? Cammalleri has scored as many goals in half the number of games, would probably cost about 2 million less than Gomez, we wouldn't have had to give up a solid roster player and a blue-chip prospect for him, and his stats aren't inflated from playing on a highly-talented team (80 pts with the Kings, ffs).

Anonymous said...

Wait, what? Playing with Iginla isn't going to inflate your stats?

And, really, two inches shorter and we'd be better off with Koivu. Actually, you know what? We would've been better with Koivu, period.

South Shore Habs Fan said...

@ Anonymous
Cammalleri put up some pretty impressive numbers playing for the LA freakin' Kings, though I understand why you'd be leery. I dunno, Tanguay-Cammalleri-Kovalev just feels right to me, I can't explain it. I do agree that I'd rather have Koivu back at this point, though. We'd have an extra 5 million to play with. That's Komi right fucking there.

What concerns me is that while we have a boatload of D prospects, they're all offensive D-men. We have no stay-at-home D beyond Shawn Belle, and even then he's pretty old for a prospect.

Boob Gainey said...

Folks. Some perspective.

Gomez is better than Koivu.

Young HF29 said...

good job Boob, keep it positive.

and what about a Gomez-kovy miracle combo? like 85-90 points each? that's in the realm of possibility, no? Price has a Vezina season under a new coach and it's 3rd place in the conference

/up to nine drinks

South Shore Habs Fan said...

Well, if you insist on being positive... I guess he'll fit perfectly into Martin's system.

And if he and AK46 can get some chemistry going... look out!

A lot of Rangers fans in other comment boards are sounding a lot like Habs fans. They didn't want a stud defenseman or PK expert who's injured more than not, they wanted Patches or Dagger. I say thanks to Bob Gainey for not losing Patches, Dagger, or Subban (who everyone wants).

Anonymous said...

Bond: Okay, don't be ridiculous now. It may well be a bad deal, but its far from damning us to a terrible season.

Losing Higgins is not too bad a loss, considering our depth when it comes to players that can play pretty good 3rd-4th line roles. And, really, McDonagh wasn't likely to play for us this year, anyways.

And, for a streak of desperate optimism: I don't remember McDonagh shining too much in the World Juniors, maybe Bob and company knew something about him not panning out that we didn't.

bond said...

yo anonymous..... it's not this deal... gomez is a helluva player... it's the trend ..... i don't think ANY ufa wants to come here and probably at least some of the CH ufas want out. unless the kid in nets steals 10-15 games, it isn't that difficult to see a whole lot of teams finishing ahead of mtl. remember, they only made the playoffs this year because florida couln't win a game in the last week. don't reserve your playoff tickets.

Boob Gainey said...

Tanguay, Koivu and Kovy all said they wanted to stay.

So that should put paid to the notion that no one wants to play here.

Now we need a scorer for Gomez and Kovy. Hossa or Havlat would do just fine.

Anonymous said...

When most of you stop whining like a bunch of fucking wussies, you'll realize this is not a bad trade.

McDonaugh is nothing more than a college kid who has yet to prove anything. He's not ready for another 3 years minimum and I don't feel like waiting anymore

I'll take Gomez over Higgins any day...he's one piece of the puzzle...BG is not done yet..

Anonymous said...

Alternatively, they only ended up placing so low this year because all sorts of shit happened. I'm still sticking behind my belief that the team wasn't particularly bad (even if they played that way), but were more victims of untimely injuries and off-ice controversies.

bond said...

i think kovalev would take a haircut deal to play with malkin, arguably the best player in the league. mario loves the guy... they won together.

That being said, I'm not drink and this trade is actually growing on me. I think I need help!

Oh, and my verif word is herspoo. Draw your own conclusions. No, wait, please refrain from drawing them. Just make a picture in your head, that'll be enough.

South Shore Habs Fan said...

Hmm. Had some time to think about the trade, and I'm not as pissed as I was. If we were trading Higgins and McDonagh for a 29-year old Koivu I'd be all for it. I think the UFA signings will determine whether this move was a coup or a catastrophe. I had better see the word "Habs" early and often tomorrow!

Gomez is the 6th highest paid player in the league. He is a 2nd line center at best, who hasn't meshed well with anyone besides Brian Gionta. Just when I thought this was going to be Sather's last year, and he was going to get canned, Bob Gainey has to make him look like a genius.
