The Weekend Open Thread of Love was made possible 65 years ago today

Heya! So I got to thinking this morning. You know, if it wasn't for the brave Allied forces storming the beach of Normandy on June 6, 1944, we wouldn't have the freedom today to post pictures of babes kissing. Think about that.

The focus of our weekend is of course Game 5 tonight in Detroit. The Wings expect Datsyuk to play barring some sort of accident on the way to the Joe. Has Pensburgh ripped momentum away permanently? I highly doubt it. Wings are just too good to let it slip away like that. They may be tired and old, however. Should be a doozy.

In other hockey news, the NFL, NBA, and MLB stuck their noses in the Coyotes situation and filed a court brief and bla bla bla we should keep our iron control over everything, bad precedent, bla bla bla. I'm a lawyer and I even I find this shit boring already. Elsewhere, we've got French Open Finals, Mike Weir in contention at The Memorial, and Game 2 of the NBA Finals tomorrow. Go ahead and comment to your hearts' desire. You can say anything you want, thanks to the brave soldiers 65 years ago today.

Series wouldn't be even if both teams had their Hart Trophy finalist Russians at full strength. Or both out with an ouchie foot. Injuries suck - hockey is better without them. :(

(And I have now fulfilled my quota for both an obvious and irrational comment for the weekend. Have a good one.)

Kisses from France. 65 years after D-Day, we'll vote (tomorrow) for the European elections. That's a pretty cool symbol...

I'm writing this just as Harper makes his speech. He has an incredibly weird accent when he speaks French. Un mélange d'accent Anglais et Québécois. I like it.

I'm more excited for the huge slate of World Cup qualifiying games today. I'll be watching US - Honduras and flipping to the Stanley Cup Finals every once in awhile to check the score.

Daily dose of anti-Bettman sentiment

Series hinges on whether Datsyuk can shake the Zombie tag, methinks. If either of these teams makes it to the final next year, though, we'll have to rename them the Detroit Bushes and the Pittsburgh Clintons.

WV: "alike". The major leagues are all alike - corrupt as a third-world dictatorship.

Wow. 5-0 Detroit in the second period. Can anyone really now argue that MAF is a legitimate #1 goaltender?
I always thought he was over-hyped and it looks, once again, like I'm right. Terrible call on the Pens part to sign him long-term.

Not really Fleury's fault tonight, IMHO. 3 PPG, and the Pittsburgh D clears the net as effectively as the Habs' does. Forget the Islanders, the Pens should be the ones looking at signing Komisarek this summer, they need someone to lay out Hossa or Franzen and break the cycle. Speaking of which, I fucking hate watching Franzen and Hossa, it's frustrating. They never fall down, unless it's on top of Fleury.

The way Detroit gets away with interference (goaltender and otherwise) and slashing pisses me off to no end, but I can't say the Pens are any cleaner tonight. Detroit has the talent, the depth, and the system to win without all the bullshit, so it's disappointing that they play that way.

Jesus Christ, does Pittsburgh need a real 4th line, though. I really miss Lats-Laps-Nonstopoulos right now. You're going to send Miroslav Satan on the forecheck? Really?

@ SSHF

I don't know... the first goal was even strength, a weak fluttering puck that Fleury should've had in his sleep.
The second goal, a mini breakaway by Filppula who slips it into a five hole larger than an elephant. Also at even strength, and also a bad goal on MAF's part.

Until then, the Pens were playing pretty good hockey - I would even go so far as to say they were the better team on the ice. But when your goalie gives 2 softies on the first 10 shots he faces, it's hard to recover...

As for the rest of the game, sure 3 PP goals are harder for the goalie to stop but come on - that Kronwall goal from in front of the net? MAF was on his knees faster than a Thai hooker on this one, and that left all kinds of room up for Kronwall to shoot at. He completely misplayed that puck.

Obviously I'm not trying to absolve the Pens D for shoddy coverage left right and center. BUT, in such a critical game in the SCF, the allegedly 'star' goaltender has to make a difference in a positive way, and to me last night MAF was a difference maker in the wrong way.

True enough. I suppose the fact that he's being vastly outplayed by Chris freakin' Osgood says it all...

Is it September yet? Or at least July 1st?
