Welcome our new classy overlord

Sure he's bilingual, but he's from Ontario. The 110% guys won't like him.

So lap dances to FHF reader QLess for reporting that Team 990 is reporting that Jacques Martin will in fact be the Habs next head coach. A punch from the bouncer to the same QLess for forcing me to listen to 20 minutes of Team 990 to confirm this. I can confirm that yes, Team 990 is reporting it as a "done deal" as QLess said. He has gotten out of his Panthers contract, and will be put in front of the Montreal media pretty soon.

I'm sure you're waiting for the FHF insta-reaction. Problem is I've only had 3 minutes, and I need 10 minutes in blogworld. So the pros - bilingual, experience, defensive discipline. Cons - defensive discipline. Good luck teaching that to Kovy.

OK FHF'ers, make my mind up for me.

UPDATE - Habs I/O is reporting that the Habs have a 2 PM press conference to introduce the Martinizer.

Has he won anything in a gazillion years?

At least it's not Hartley or Therien (yes, the antichambre guys wanted him back).

Pro: Not Carbo.

Con: Not reincarnated Toe Blake.

Further pro: not a rookie coach.

Anybody else thinks he looks like a fatter Steve Carrell? Not nearly as funny though.

I'm happy about this.

Pro: Finally, not a fucking rookie coach.

Pro: Playing defensively responsible hockey is important especially when your goalie can bring teh suck on a regular basis. See Wings, Red, games 1 and 2 of the playoffs.

Con: Has a tendency towards boring systems.

Pro: Does let talented players mess with his system according to their needs (See Lemieux, Mario at the 2002 Olympics).

All in all, I think I'm pretty happy.
Mr. LG77 is fucking over the moon right now... Jacques Martin is one of his favourite coaches!

Pro: Of the 3 French speaking coaches named Jacques with NHL experience, he is better than the other two.

I would only be happy if he brings Bouwmeester with him?

BTW How fast are these darn fangled new interwebs?! He's already in listed in wikepedia as the habs head coach.

Pros: In 14 years of NHL coaching, only missed playoffs 4 years, 3 of those the last 3 with FLA.

Cons: In 10 years of playoffs, has only won 5 series.

Pros: He's not Patrick Roy. (the rookie coach)

Cons: He's not Patrick Roy. (the tempermental hothead prick who will tell the media exactly what he thinks)

Sorry to be such a douche, but it's Jacques freaking Martin. I mean, we Leafs fans don't have much, but we have those four playoff victories over Ottawa. And Martin was the face of them. This is the coach to take Montreal over the hump? A terrible, terrible decision.

I'd rather they have given Captain Kirk Muller a shot, but I know how you all are hankering for an experienced coach. I get that. I just can't imagine wanting Martin's experience.

@eyebleaf - you do not have to apologize. i was kidding too. you know how much we love you, and we just accept the fact that all Leafs fans are douches ;)

@Noda - i actually made the original Wikipedia update, but then someone updated my update already!

eyebleaf-
how do you expect Jacques Martin to win a playoff series with Patrick Fucking Lalime in nets?

Kate said...

So, how long do you think he'll last? What's our average shelf life here, 2 years?

Navin Vaswani (@eyebleaf) said...

About the same way I expect him to win a playoff series with Carey Price in net ...

Ok...wait a second...a Leafs fan is laughing at the new Habs head coach...The same Leafs who thought PAT FUCKIN QUINN would lead them to the Cup...The same Leafs who paid money to have JOHN BROPHY behind the bench...They couldn't even win when they got Pat Burns - so why should any self respecting hockey fan give a shit about someone who has wasted his life rooting on the Leafs!

i don't want to alarm anyone, but rumor is Mario Tremblay as assistant coach.

Young HF29 said...

@shutdown - epic FAIL. I am totally alarmed.

lawyergirl77 said...

Epic EPIC fail.

it's not a rumour.

*sob*

Fucking bleuet bionique rides again...

Navin Vaswani (@eyebleaf) said...

Hey kmaxx, calm down friend. We're all in this together. Actually, we're not, but you know what I mean.

And it's Pat Quinn that Jacques Martin continues to have nightmares about to this day.

And, in Pat Burns' defense, we came pretty close in '93. Almost made it to the final! Woo!

This is why I love reading this blog. Oh, the passion.

Gainey Out!

Boob Gainey said...

Thank God Rejean Houle was unavailable.

Tremblay is really the worst conceivable choice. What's wrong with Lever?

KML said...

Maybe Tremblay's there in case Martin gets too "systemic" for them.

Given that he was the anti-system as a coach, Tremblay could ease players' fears that any order or logic will be required.

I have to say, I'm rather excited about reliving an era in which the Habs were a fucking laughing stock.
