The Morning Skate for Monday, June 29th

Bullet points for what you missed while having nightmares of blowing a two-goal lead...
  • RDS reports that Bob wanted to announce a Vinny trade at the draft, but was rebuffed by the Lightning owner. Hmmmm;
  • Jay Bouwmeester has been traded to Calgary. Hope he enjoys the two days there.
Two days left 'til Free Agent Frenzy Day (©TSN). Panger tells us he's got a UFA preview for you. If it's as good as his Draft preview, watch out.

I've already done my own UFA preview, and the Habs chances of landing each one (if you can't click on the link, just click on my name and it will bring you there).

I do think by mid-season next year fans will probably be happy that deal for Vince was cut short, just like how Briere turned out for Philly and how he's affecting their cap. Dodged that bullet big time. If the Islanders had picked Hedman, and the Bolts forced to take Tavares, there would be no need for Vince anymore by some logic only TSN can think up. However, by strengthening their defense with a puck-moving defenseman, they now have no use for drooling over Markov (thank god), but will still have problems working around that elephantine contract, especially when these kids call for "raises" in a few years.

Meanwhile, Bob can lean over those GM shoulders and ask "So... Putting anyone on waivers? *wink*"

@Tom - Very creative and positive!

@Number31 - Agree. So glad we dodged that Brière bullet. As much as I like Lecavalier as a player, I think he'd be a bust in Montreal. Maybe I'm wrong but I think Vinny would crumble under the pressure. Unless we get St-Louis AND Vinny, yeah right.

The problem with trading for Vinny is you get stuck with the huge salary and you need to give up four players.

If sign Hossa or the Sedins you get a slightly less impactful player (or players), but you don't have to give up anything.

Tom, sadly, you're probably right.
Let's hope we manage to keep the ones that wore the CH last year, or it'll be fucking barren at the Bell this year.

Same team as last year?

That sounds ... bad.

Boob Gainey said...

It's the Sundin saga all over again. Gainey is telling Tanguay's agent no one is getting an offer until the Lecavalier trade is dealt with.

Bob. You're going to lose players just like Streit last year.

Can't you multitask man?

Oh wait, you were a hockey player.

@BG: where are you getting this info from? i haven't seen/heard that anywhere. can you post a link?

oh god, this is not going to end well.

You feel like worrying? How about:

Our D for next year, at the moment:

Markov-Gorges
Hamrlik-O'Byrne
Webber-?

Come on Bob. Give Komi what he wants.

anyone else get the feeling that Babs is either on the verge of pulling off something bold and brilliant or falling flat on his face?

DP-
The Sedins is my guess.
Gainey said it was impossible for him to offer contracts to Tanguay or Koivu. But he gave qualifying offers to all RFA's and offered contracts to Kovalev and Komisarek. Tanguay and Koivu are LW/C. Like the Sedins. Whatever. Eklund is jizzing himself right now.

Number31 said...

Well, whatever he's up to, if it's successful it better be worth the fact he won't be able to resign Saku...

Glad to hear he's hard-pressed to go after Komi and Kovy first, though. They're pretty much the two most important UFAs he has to look at from within. But I'd really like Lang back to solidify the Kostitsyns again.

I'm going to reserve judgement on Kovy until I see the length and amount of his contract. Not offering a contract to Koivu yet makes me sad. I think he's gone and if I were him, I'd leave, too.

I'm really gonna miss Saku.

@Shutdown: not even supposed to mention that name, but is one of these guys Eklund?

i think the best possible july 1st would be bob pulling off the sedins while keeping kovy and komo. if tanguay can be squeezed in there as well, i'd be happy

Schneider and Saku being left on the back-burner I can understand, but no contract for Tanguay yet? It'd be really nice if we had some established offensive talent under 30 years old.

Getting the Sedins would be such a giant fuck-you to Burke. I love it.

The thought of a Sedin-Sedin-Tanguay line is hilarious. It'd be like watching an Italian soccer game. Pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, fancy dribbling thing, pass, nifty pass, pass...
