Penguins shorty preview and open thread

Sorry kids, real life got in the way this afternoon, and after the brilliance of the Lost preview how could I top that anyway. So here's the basics, in handy bullet point form:
  • 7 PM start, on the CBC for some reason (oh, we're playing Sid, there's your reason);
  • Carbo is going with the same line up as last night, including TFS;
  • CJAD reports Carbo told the media they were a bunch of idiots for all the Kovy BS (I'm paraphrasing), and RDS says Kovy is all good and will be back practicing with the team tomorrow, after RDS stirred the pot yesterday with a bunch of stories from Russia. Wait, what?
  • All hail The Semitic Saviour of the Power Play, and TFS' old goalie pads;
  • The Flower thinks the Habs suck, and Bob was a dick to Kovy, and Carbo can't coach;
  • Crosby, Malkin, you know the deal;
  • Dan Bylsma makes his home coaching debut for the Pens.
Go Pants, go meth, etc., etc.

I agree with the Flower about everything he says about Carbo. Carbo is a giant douche fag.

I'm pretty happy all that Russian reporter stuff was all bullshit.

White pads are way better then red pads. Wow, that's pretty disturbing.

Schneider gets a hat-trick tonight.

The game will go to OT and Kovalev will jump in his Cessna and fly to Pittsburgh to score the GWG.

My word is "rentes", which translates from french to "rent" as in "rental" as in, BG will acquire a "rental" player.

Am off to the land of the fucking Nordiques for discoveries and client meetings. They stuck me in the kiddy seat in the back of the train. And because of it, I got screwed out of all non-vegetarian food options. Not like I would really be able to eat much of it -train. Won't. Stop. Swaying.

I know your hearts are breaking for me. *crickets*

Point of the post? PLEASE POST UPDATES! I will be checking the iPhone surreptitiously for updates throughout meetings (and try to claim I have a pea-sized bladder)

And while The Flower's quotes had me in stitches this am, brother needs to shut the fuck up, get back behind his bar and speculate in private like the rest of us. He's such a media whore...

Word verification: dopers. Heh. Too easy!!

Lafleur is just bitter about how his career ended with a very similar suggestion from CH brass that he take a walk and never come back...

Anonymous said...

OR he is trying to deflect from all the attention his trial for perjury is attracting.

kevincrumbs said...

Wait, why do we have a problem with Lafleur mouthing off when all we do here is rip the team and Carbo to shreds? Or is it just that someone in his position shouldn't be saying these things in public?

I'm looking forward to a win but am wary of the Pens trying to not embarrass their new coach at home. Hm. Who knows?

Anonymous said...

Boone has a great line about Lafleur in his game blog on HI/O: "Hey, I love the Flower. But his next coaching, management or scouting job in the NHL will be his first."

I for one think everything St. Guy of Thurso says or does is fantastic. And I will kill all of you if he commands it.

Update:

Score 1-0 for the Penguins. Initial shot was stopped by Price, the rebound was shot in over his left arm (far side of the net) by Sykora.

At 6:00 to go in the first, Pittsburgh outshooting Montreal 7 to 2. Not a lot of stuff going on.

Anonymous said...

(If you want details like line combinations or defensive pairings or such, I can't help out with that - I just have the game on in the background as I'm doing other stuff, but I can keep you updated on big things like the score.)

So far the game has been pretty quiet - it hasn't been very fast, neither team has been hitting much, and the crowd is awfully quiet. I think they might be bored.

kevincrumbs said...

Rather boring so far... Pittsburgh crowd is doing their best to imitate the crowd in Atlanta, except with twice as many people in the crowd. Komi looks pretty good tonight and I haven't thought that in ages. Not sure how I feel about Carey tonight.

Bullshit call on Kostitsyn earlier, in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

Tyler Kennedy in for hooking. Montreal power play.

Schneider fired wide several times, but nothing much going on. Pretty slow and ineffective power play.

1:09 to go in the first period.

kevincrumbs said...

I'm sure this will come back to bite me/us in the ass but Malkin & Crosby don't scare me the same way that Ovie does.

Anonymous said...

End of the first 1-0, Pittsburgh.

Montreal needs some Red Bull or coffee or jumper cables or something to get them going.

Anonymous said...

Shots are 8-3 for the Pens after the 1st.

THERE'S the slow, disinterested, fucking crappy team I love to hate. I was missing them yesterday. And by missing, I mean not at all.

kevincrumbs said...

Listening to Mike Milbury makes me think:

"Always do the opposite of what Milbury says".

moeman said...

Hi lg77.

kevincrumbs said...

Penguins have some jump right now but Carey's made some solid saves. Habs still can't get a shot on net.

Anonymous said...

Good line from one of the announcers:

"Montreal is going to have to get some shots, because they can't win the game one-nothing anymore."

Still 1-0 Penguins, with 14 minutes to go in the second.

Anonymous said...

Pleks scored! 1-1 tie.

kevincrumbs said...

YESSSSS

Great pass from Kostitsyn to Pleks.

kevincrumbs said...

For what it's worth, Fleury's given up some big rebounds.

Carey's looking better as the game has progressed. Oops... Pittsburgh just scored but I wouldn't blame Carey.

Anonymous said...

Details:

Matt Cooke trying to pass to Tyler Kennedy, and turned the puck over at the blueline.

Right after that goal, an attempted wraparound by Montreal and a good save by Price.

Anonymous said...

Now 2-1 Pittsburgh.

Shot tipped in front by a Penguin.

Anonymous said...

Montreal power play - let's see if they can do anything with it.

11 minutes to go in the second period.

Anonymous said...

Nope. Montreal having a tough time even getting set up - and the defensemen miss the net when they do get shots off.

kevincrumbs said...

Six fucking shots on goal so far. C'mon...

kevincrumbs said...

Yay! Power play!

Anonymous said...

Max Pacioretty got a shot off the pad of Fleury, but drew a penalty.

Anonymous said...

Patches is movin' up the list of My Favourite Habs.

There's precious little otherwise going on.

kevincrumbs said...

Man, if we're playing so conservatively against such a shitty team, what the fuck are we going to do when we play a good team?

kevincrumbs said...

Schneider! 2-2!

Young HF29 said...

just walked in to MATHIEU!!!!

Anonymous said...

2-2 tie.

Schneider goal on a five-on-three powerplay.

Montreal still on the power play.

kevincrumbs said...

I like the kid but Stewart on the PP? Really!?

Anonymous said...

Both teams actually skating now. Pace much better - and shots are evening up some now.

Anonymous said...

Tied up 2-2 after two periods.

Montreal finally woke up. They were running at about 30% speed the first period, looked like, and were playing defense by having all five skaters backing up through the neutral zone. Boring!

copyranter said...

Well of course Schneider can still bring it from the point, but he's a complete liability in his own zone.

Young HF29 said...

fuck fuck fuck

Anonymous said...

That was quick. :(

Crosby and Malkin on the same line, and Malkin scored. 3-2 Pittsburgh after 29 seconds in the third period.

copyranter said...

Case-in-point: terrible coverage by Schneider on that goal.

Young HF29 said...

fuck fuck fuck again

copyranter said...

Another bad play by Schneider, -2.

kevincrumbs said...

Thank God for Fleury's suckitude

Anonymous said...

Max Talbot 4-2 Pittsburgh.

By all means, Montreal, keep giving up 3-on-2's and 2-on-1's. And sit on your own goaltender so he can't move.

Montreal scored while announcing the Pittsburgh goal.

4-3 Pittsburgh.

(I hope LG77 has Tivo'd the game, because I'm afraid we might be confusing her.)

kevincrumbs said...

Wow.. Pens... way to play three guys on the right side of the ice there.

I feel that the Habs are feeling confident after their third goal. Defence is a whole different issue, of course.

Anonymous said...

At least the game isn't making my sleepy, kevincrumbs. It's more interesting to watch now that both teams are taking chances.

Verif = hopen.

I am hopen Montreal can come back all the way and beat the Penguins. :)

Anonymous said...

Tie game 4-4!

Pleks again. What a shot - top shelf.

kevincrumbs said...

Maybe, maybe we can get rid of the Zombie tag for Pleks?

4-4. Go Habs Go. Fleury sucks.

kevincrumbs said...

FUUUUUUCK

Anonymous said...

5-4 Pittsburgh.

Gonchar.

(Seriously, LG77 we aren't messing with you - it really is this crazy of a game.)

kevincrumbs said...

Against any other team, both these teams would've been done by the second period. But since we both suck, this is an exciting game.

Baroque, you're right, since the 1st, this has at least been exciting. God knows if we can even extract a point out of this game.

Anonymous said...

Georges playing pretty good defense on Crosby.

And I didn't know Dandenault could stickhandle like that.

kevincrumbs said...

Am I cruel in hoping that Cube is out for awhile?

Anonymous said...

Soup Cube out. Maybe a knee. Not putting any weight on his right foot as he was helped off the ice.

Anonymous said...

Am I cruel in hoping that Cube is out for awhile?

Depends. If you are worried that he has been working too hard and needs a break for his own mental health, then no. :)

(You clearly have his best interests at heart.)

Anonymous said...

I love the way Patches-Pleky-BigTits are playing together!

It's a shame Carbo'll split that line up for the next game though.

kevincrumbs said...

This better not be our only taste of playoff style hockey this season.

Anonymous said...

Three minutes and some.

Come on, Montreal - one more goal to tie, and then hold on. You can get a point!

Anonymous said...

*sigh*

Penguins win 5-4 and fans celebrate like crazy.

It wasn't the goaltending for Montreal, I don't think, as much as a lack of defense.

craptastic

kevincrumbs said...

I really don't know what to think.

Horrible defence with Carey being hung out to dry and if you score four on the road, you really should win.

This was exciting, sure, and at least we weren't done before the middle of the second period like we've been done so many times recently but I can't help but think the excitement of two shitty teams not playing defence will mask some real problems there.

Will Kovy fuck up Pleks and Kostitsyn's recently increased output? I'm tempted to say that we deserved at least a point but I think that's just me with rose tinted glasses on.

It all comes down to the fact that we need points, badly. Could've had four in two games and instead ended up with one. Not a good sign.

HFF33 aka Panger said...

OK. That's it. We're not winning again this season. I'm getting on a plane and leaving the continent.

No seriously, I am. See you in a couple of weeks, when Montreal is in 10th place.

Word verification: commie. Blogger knows me too well.

Anonymous said...

Does Montreal play the Islanders again? Even the Rangers can beat the Islanders. They should get a win then ... maybe ... or maybe not.

*sigh*

Anonymous said...

Got home in time to see the last 2 goals. A few thoughts:

-Are the Canadiens afraid that the Pens smeared anthrax over the boards? Because Pittsburgh was allowed to cycle around the outside and back to the point without so much as a dirty look. Result: Gonchar's goal.
-I'm torn between keeping MaxPac up when Tanguay returns, because he's just so friggin' good, and sending him down, because with a little more development he'll be terrifying.

Oh, what was the other thing... oh, right. I saw Tom the Bomb on the ice with under 2 minutes to go. Um, Carbo? WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK? Just because Kovy sucks doesn't mean you don't.

Anonymous said...

Y'all, seriously, does anyone know what's going on with this huge secret story?? RDS guys (L'antichambre, Demers, etc) they were all saying something really big and really bad has happened concerning the players and all will be known tomorrow.

I/O has something about it, HF Boards and RDS threads alight too.

Is this for real??

kevincrumbs said...

@Melly:

Well, that's one way to get people to rush down to the newstand or dep or whatever in the morning.

I'm guessing either drug use along the lines of cocaine (okay, pun intended) or a sexual assault accusation towards one of the players. Maybe it was a gangbang lead by Lang?

Never a dull moment, folks.

lawyergirl77 said...

So drunk. Sober enough to use iphone e now but barely. Yay autocorrect!

Boo Habs. I read thru comments. Got confused. Saw we lost. Fuck. I can't take this losing shit no more. Pass the wine bitch.

Anonymous said...

This going to be bad. Habs fans, prepare your paper bags.

Arrests will be issued apparently. I'm not joking...

Fuckity Fucking Fuckkkkkkkk.

Anonymous said...

@ kevin:

Yeah, hard drugs and/or assault was my thought too. What else would have Demers all choked up about black marks against the franchise that he loves so?

What an unbelievable clusterfuck this will become if it's true.

Anonymous said...

The sky is falling.

Anonymous said...

Arrests?

How could they possibly be so fucking brain-dead stupid.

My french reading comprehension is crap these days but apparently Sergei rolls with the Crips now. Maybe he's pissed off at Grabs because he's wearing his gang colours.

At this point I'm resigned to this being an incredibly painful weekend for Habs fans and just hoping that if they've done something illegal, it might as well be something illegal and REALLY COOL, and not just filling out provincial government forms in English or something boring.

Anonymous said...

I guess we can now answer the eternal question:

"Where does Carbo get these lines?" ;)

Word verification: "menchil", or "men... chill". Somehow, I'm thinking that won't happen.

Anonymous said...

CKAC is saying the Tits Bros have been up to no good, something to do with a drug trafficker. They're saying the police are waiting at the airport for the plane to land. It's suppose to be a 3 page story in La Presse tomorrow morning.

My french is a little rusty, but I'm pretty sure that what's they're talking about.

Holy moly.

Anonymous said...

It keeps getting better, by morning the media will have Big Tits as a mob boss and Sergei the criminal mastermind behind it all.

Ah, the french media, good times, good times.

kevincrumbs said...

Best case scenario is something ala Michael Phelps where there are some pictures of them smoking the sticky icky. That or someone has violated Bill 101 severely. You know it's bad when people are still posting at this hour when the team is not on the West Coast.

Frankly, I blame myself. I live in Portland, Oregon and used to be a huge Trail Blazers guy (until I wised up to how boring basketball is). Of course, they were for many years known as the Jail Blazers. I grew up in Ohio and was a very lukewarm Bengals guy and yup, a bunch of those guys got arrested a few seasons back.

Hm. Maybe I should go "support" the Leafs, right?

Anonymous said...

nevermind. no arrests.

prairiegirlwarriorpoet's comment made me think of the Fresh Prince song.

Someone should change the song to make fun of the Tits.

Anonymous said...

Man, if all this is something as mundane as drugs and/or sex ... how dull.

No dog-fighting?
No night-club shootings?
No arranging a hit on a pregnant girlfriend?
No trying to smuggle a prosthetic penis and dehydrated urine through airport customs?

What a boring sport hockey is. :)
