I'm kinda happy for him, though. It's obvious him and Carbo weren't getting along and he was scratched way too many times this season.
He reached an impasse with the team and it's probably best that both parties moved on. He will have so much to bring to the Stars.

Begin's salary might have been $1+ million, but the cap hit this year was only $700k+ (see http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=MTL&season=080).
And, I think that means only about a third of that gets saved since Gainey only saves what's left to pay... that being said, at least that's apples to apples since we'll only have to make enough room for a third of whatever person comes in. If we only have $850k in cap space now, I guess (and I'd welcome clarity on this point from anyone), that if we used it all on one player, we've basically enough space for a player earning around $2.6million per year.

Sad to Steve go, one of my favourite Habs over last 5ish years. But 1) he'll get more ice time elsewhere, and 2) MadMax plays mostly like Begin, only more effectively.
If Janik (Yankin'?) can put in even 90% of the 110% that Steve gave every shift he was on the ice, then I'll like him just fine. He can hardly be worse than about 6-7 of our 10 or so defencemen...

It was only a matter of time before Begin was gone, but I think Bob did him a good favour. Hopefully Dallas will use him, and I think they will since their team is like all injured. Will miss the lug.
