Relax, He's Playing, Your Tickets for Tonight's Game Are Still Worth Something: Habs-Caps Open Thread

Where: Bell Centre @ 7 p.m. Game is a national broadcast on the CBC or RDS (but National means something a little different if you're watching it on RDS, like June 24 National), meaning Leafs won't be losing on this Saturday night, making the experience a little less enjoyable for everyone.

Why I'll be watching the game on Tvo at around 2 a.m.: Buddy decides to get married smack in the middle of the game. I really hope the food is worth it otherwise I'm bouncing the 40$ cheque.

+ 1 for the blog name: On Frozen Blog, that seem to have a taste for everything capital.

By way of background: These two teams came up with one of the best games of the season just last Friday, with the Habs surprisingly coming out on top and Ovie shut out on the scoring sheet. Look for order to be restored in the galaxy tonight.

Hot CH: Squid is hot. Pleks is in the medium range and Little Tits is making a case for his disdain for Hamilton. Carey is totally coming into form. Everybody else is injured or dead.

Hot Caps: The best player in the world (ever? discuss) is going to have one of those Cam Neely I-don't-care-how-many-games-I-play-I'm-still-gonna-score-50 type of seasons. We're all going to turn into huge Mike Green fans in February. Where the heck did this kid come from? He's got 12 points in his last 8 games.

Goaltending in the Capital: Jose Theodore and Semyon Varlamov have just about split the team's games this season, getting in 13 and 14 starts respectively. But the kid's numbers are just in another league, boasting a 2.35 GAA with a .922 avg compared to Theo's 3.24 and .893. If this trend continues it won't be about Varlamov stealing the starting job from Theo in the playoffs again, it'll just be his to begin with. I have to say though, with what Theo went through this summer numbers mean squat and you can measure his contribution by the courage it takes for him to get up in the morning.

Pay your cover to: A night out on Crescent and De Maisonneuve. Start of at Troikas for a good Russian meal in homage to the best player in the world (ever? discuss), and then make the 3 minute walk over to Wanda's and ask a woman called Svetlana to make your St-Petersburg feel special.

So, let's hope for a good wedding, lots of free booze and a late night game viewing that doesn't end in an overtime loss because man do I hate watching those in the middle of the night.

Discuss what's on your mind. Lets us know how you are feeling. Should Ovie be playing tonight, did the CBC interfere? Did Benoit Brunet call the NHL and say "Hahahaha, Ovie doit jouer samedi soir! Vous pouvez pas faire ça aux partisans! Hahahahah!" I love you all.

Leach playing as a forward tonight!
Am I the only one who thinks this will be a highlight of JM`s coaching here?

i am very much looking forward to this CHips-Wyman-Leach line. quake in your skates, Caps D!

Funny, everyone loves the capitals now. Living in the DC area you wouldn't believe all the douchebags with Mike Green jerseys who didn't even know hockey existed until 2007.

habsss said...

And by douchebags I mean these people.

*cough cough*

Figures.
I always get sick the week before a fucking show.
Mr. LG77 (the one who has saved himself from performing - lucky bastard) is headed to the game tonight with his groomsmen. We wound up trading to get 4 tix together.

So he will watch Ovie live.
I get to eat takeout on the couch in sweatpants. With Advil and beer.

Good compromise...

What should I do for takeout? Pizza? Dirtybird? Hmmmm

Young HF29 said...

@LG - Chinese? I always find some good spicy szechuan clears up any illness

lawyergirl77 said...

29 - the chinese delivery joints in my neck of the woods su-diddly-uck.

But General Tao does sound appealing... hmmmm...

kevincrumbs said...

@LG77: Advil and beer, eh? Sounds like some newfangled cocktail.

@habsss: Well, at least the Verizon Center has some life to it, unlike the morgue that's Mellon Arena.

Boob Gainey said...

When I went to Verizon there were lots of Oates, Gartner and Langway jerseys, so someone was watching games before 2007.

Young HF29 said...

Verizon Center had Yuengling beer and delicious food when I was there. and the Red Rockers. I enjoyed that place.

kevincrumbs said...

As much as I like the Bell Centre's atmosphere, I fucking hate those narrow concourses and the crappy food/beer selection. I know the hot dogs are famous or whatever, but I'm not a fan.

lawyergirl77 said...

KC: The food and drinks available at the Bell Centre are unmitigated shite. The hotdogs sucks. The pizza is cardboard (palatable only when hot) and the smoked meat is hit and miss.

Sadly, I am addicted to the fries. The must lace the coating with crack.

And Advil & Beer = a faboo cocktail. don't knock it 'till you tried it.

lawyergirl77 said...

^^ Totally aware that it should read "The hotdogs suck". Not sure how that "s" got on the end...

lehab said...

and i was looking forward to that hotdog next friday lol. Flying in for one night just to see those fucking bruins lose! can't wait

lawyergirl77 said...

Hmmm... do I watch this shite on CBC or RDS? Decisions, decisions...

GoldenGirl11 said...

@LG
Cavendish Fries. You can buy them at any grocery store. Freezer section.

lawyergirl77 said...

GG11 - yeah, I know. I try to ignore the siren call when I walk past the freezer section at Loblaws!!

kevincrumbs said...

@lehab: Well, you should have one just to say you've had one. I bought my GF one when we were there just so she could try one. Who knows, maybe you'll like them?

Besides that though, save your eating for one of Montreal's ten million great restaurants. I recommend Romados for some Portuguese style roasted chicken and delicious fries for a pre game meal.

lawyergirl77 said...

Heh. Scott Gomez speaking French on RDS... I wonder whether he will be able to come back on Tuesday or not. Would be nice to have another regular back in the lineup (But they'd better not scratch Pyatt or White, dammit!)

lawyergirl77 said...

Craaaaaaaaaap!

What a soft fucking goal by Price. He should have had that...

kevincrumbs said...

UGH.

@LG77: I'd think that if we're at the point of playing Leach as a forward, it'll be a D-man who sits instead of Pyatt or White.

kevincrumbs said...

Uh oh...

kevincrumbs said...

Never a good sign to need to call a timeout ten minutes into the game. Way to prepare the team, JM.

lawyergirl77 said...

Christ I turn around and it's 2-0. And both goals were soooooft. Shit. Price needs a break.

lehab said...

@kc...thanks. anyone else with recommendations?

kevincrumbs said...

Chips on the PP? WTF?

I miss AK.

Kate said...

They look crappy tonight, fuck.

lawyergirl77 said...

@lehab- what kind of eats do you like? And are you looking for something close to the Bell Centre or are you willing to hoof it/metro it?

lehab said...

@lg... i don't get in until 130 pm so... guess i will just be walking around downtown...crescent st or wherever

lehab said...

finally! oh yeah... i will be the guy withe gms namebar on my jersey in sec 305

Crowd sings 'Ole' when we're down 2-1, in the middle of the 2nd.

Fezworth's head explodes.

PS. GO RIDERS!

YA! Great Garbage!

NOW we got a game!

lehab - If you want a really good burger (buyer beware - muy expensive), try mbrgr on Drummond and De Maisonneuve. You can go for slightly cheaper burgers at Mister Steer (but - sacrilege alert - I don't like them as much, especially with how they've jacked up the price!!)

Great beer and decent eats - 3 brasseurs (corner of Ste Cath and Crescent)

An abundance of (mediocre-to-decent) Indian Food - Maharajah (buffet near Peel and René Levesque)

And for some of the yummiest Chicken and Ribs this side of heaven BarB Barn on Peel.

New joint that is actually pretty good for wood burning oven pizza - Arlequino.

I'm probably missing a whole lot, but those are the ones that came to mind off the top of my head.

AND JUST AS I FINISHED TYPING!! GOOOOAAAALLLLLLLL!!!

kevincrumbs said...

Urologist!

kevincrumbs said...

Also, please die Bob Cole and Glenn Healy.

lehab said...

thanks lg! keep typing we need some insurance

fezworth said...

What a block by White! WOW!

kevincrumbs said...

I love how the crowd went from cheering Ovechkin in the first to booing him every time he touches the puck. That's what you get for whining.

fezworth said...

@kevincrumbs - That's some EPIC booing as well. 'All together now!'

fezworth said...

The reffing has been AWFUL tonight. Seriously bad.

lawyergirl77 said...

fez - the reffing has been awful all season... and it's worse live. This game seems less bad to me than others... believe it or not!!

fezworth said...

well, fuck.

kevincrumbs said...

UGH.

lawyergirl77 said...

Dammit!!!!

Anonymous said...

Right after the bad call on O'byrn's 'trip' my buddy here who hates both these teams immediately said, "Now the Caps will get a PP in the last minute". Prophetic.

kevincrumbs said...

Fucking Caps.

fezworth said...

Shit, Price deserved better than that tonight.

habsss said...

Fuck.

Unknown said...

God help the Eastern Conference once we get some warm bodies back.

Kate said...

@Ronan,

My thoughts exactly.

boob gainey said...

Heartbreak!

Tremendous coaching by JM to hold the Caps to only 20 shots. Great effort by everyone, given that we were playing with 3 lines.

I don't think Sergei's going back to Hamilton.

Anonymous said...

Chipchura is now getting PP time? Did anyone envision this? Ugh. I cannot wait till the injured come back.

Also, Gui! scored tonight...

Navin Vaswani (@eyebleaf) said...

Aboot time you fuckers lost in the shootout.

lawyergirl77 said...

Eech - the proles are really turning on Boone over at I/O right now because he called the Habs' win before they had actually, uh, won.

*sigh*

That's not the reason they lost, eedjits. Lappy should have taken that last faceoff - he had better stats tonight in the faceoff circle.

Oops. My bad. That's actual hockey analysis instead of superstition.
Mea maxima culpa.

kevincrumbs said...

The shootout yet again consisted of guys who shot low, including the guy who we all thought knew to shoot high, Max.

cottoneye said...

Listen, I love Plekanec, I really do. I kept making excuses for him last year and defending him to my coworkers, that's how much I love him.

But, PLEASE, can we never send him out during the shootout, please?

Kthxbai.

L Dude said...

Not to point fingers, OK I'm pointing fingers, but Sergei had the puck on his stick and failed to clear. I said (and my dog can confirm this) "That's gonna come back to bite us in the ass."
Sure enough, they end up taking a penalty and well, you know the rest.

So, is it safe to say in the 1:11 he played, Leach cannot play forward. Considering he played 2:50, is Wyman heading back to Hamilton (assuming we're getting Gomez and/or Dags back)? Chipchura on the PP? Really? There was no better option? Lapierre? Pyatt? Halak?

Aside from that, I agree, a well coached game by JM. Did the timeout help? Hard to say. They didn't really get going til the 2nd period, but then, they did allow only 4 shots in the first.

I disagree on the OV goal being soft. However, all 4 players (including Price) between the puck and the net must know that Backstrom is passing that puck. So, in that sense, I guess Carey should have already been waiting at the far post.

Well, wait til the end of the season to see if that missed point comes back to haunt us.

Finally, just want to say what a pleasant fucking surprise Pyatt and White are. Are they superstars? No. But they're great pluggers and grinders and their PK skills are awesome. Too bad Gomez got thrown into the Higgins/Pyatt deal.

moeman said...

Looks like I missed a fun game.

lg77 knows, BarBBarn ribs are sticky, sweet delish.

Also, it would be weirdly fun to see MAB in the shootout (say 2nd shooter after a Squid goal) and have him just tee one up and blast it.

CivilizedWorm said...

Price let in a couple weak ones, but that's moot -- he kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win.

Don't really have a problem with turtlepleks on the shootout. But SK76 should have gotten the nod instead of lapierre. SK76 has been great for us since he's been called up.

MTL is going to have to make some moves when all the injured players start coming back. MAB should stay as a PP specialist. White and Pyatt aren't going anywhere, same for SK76.
