The Morning Skate for Thursday, March 31st

Bullet points for what you missed while having nightmares of being excluded from the debates...
  • On the plus side, Habs scored 2 PP goals. On the minus side, everything else. Canes 6 Habs 2. Commence panicking (if you weren't already). More later today;
  • Not Ryan Miller and the Sabres shut out the Rangers. This leaves the teams tied for 7th, 2 points behind the Habs in 6th and they both have a game in hand;
  • Devils technically still in the playoff hunt after a 3-2 win over the Isles, the same way the Leaf is technically in the playoff hunt;
  • The Ducks probably buried the Flames with a 4-2 win;
  • Blues 10, Wings 3. Huh?
Sigh.

I'm currently watching about a dozen fat robins running like mad around my yard. If only the fucking Habs had that much ambition.

Don't like the way this is going down. They are not in the playoffs yet. That fucking leaf game is going to be a shitshow. 2007 all over again.

They can't compete with a desperate team. WTF! They should be desperate too. Are they channeling Chokula's mortician demeanour?

The silver lining in all this will be the Count's dismissal if they fuck this up. Or as Steve would say: the Vampire will off their necks.

I'm not excited for the games anymore. When Camalleri scored, I was really 'meh', not more. Then I stopped watching. Then I tuned in once in a while and everything was wrong. I'm on the pessimist side now. We are slumping into the playoffs and we won't last.

For all this talk about Subban being a dirty player where is the talk about Skinner? He is dirty behind the play taking shots at guys, diving almost worse than Cole does and only getting up after he realizes there isnt' a penalty and he is flagrant with his stick. I understand Subban does a lot of the same stuff and can be dirty at times as well but I wish he wasn't singled out as a problem player when it is common place for rookies to use other means to get an edge on bigger more experienced opponents.

in the post-apocalyptic world following last night's Habs loss I just wanted to give you an LL update.

I was unimpressed with the lad before because, at best, he could not bring a game when the opposition was of a reduced calibre. Last night he scored the very opportunistic winning goal which was an impressive display of speed and skill. Unfortunately this kid is 20 already so he is unlikely Junior eligible next year. Can you say Bulldogs? The issue is that everytime he gets hit, he turns his back to the checker. He may be quick enough to avoid injury in the Q, but he will have to learn very quickly he can't do this in the NHL or even the AHL. WTF? Shouldn't his peewee coach taught him not to do this?

From Marc-Antoine Godin's twitter:

"Darche: Seems like we're fragile. Hamrlik: We're not ready mentally. Gill: When it's not one thing that doesn't work it's another." Article here: http://bit.ly/eZ3jzd

No bueno.

@Jason - I thought Stamkos was even worse than Skinner the last coupla times we played, so it's not just the brand new guys trying to break in that do it.

I see that D'agger has 20G 22A, which would put him 1 point behind Squid (who is second) in the Habs lineup this year. Now please tell me how it is that Dagger came and scored 4 times in his first 5 games for us, then more or less disappeared until he went to Saint Loo? Did he discover strippers and meth or something? Don't they have that stuff in St. Loo, too?

Dags problem was a concussion. No one (in hockey) seems to realize that a concussion can affect a player for up to a year. Little things like fine motor control and coordination can be off for much longer than the obvious symptoms.

I can't even get up the interest of watching a game anymore. I just occasionally flip to RDS and have yet to see something that makes me want to stay and watch. hasn't happenned in a long time.
only Hab thing I follow nowadays is this blog.

There haven't been any good streams available for the last two games. I listen to Rick and Sergio a bit then go to sleep. Habs are worse than I have seen them for a while... is it all because of the fucking chara hit? and if it is, then fucking what?

Team is not fucking ready to play when the puck drops, I don't know how many games I've seen this year where they come out flat. And even when they don't, the get 130 shots in the first tem minutes and make every Joe Schmoe goalie look like Ken fuckin Dryden.

Sergio has it down:
no big forwards for in front of the net: Patches=X, CHicken=Pawk Pawk, DDD,Gio,the whole fucking rest of them=ygtbfk
no scorers with scoring touch: Squid=not this year, Gio=Captain means don't score?, Plexxxe =injured, DDD=our only hope?
fucking playing TFS into the fucken ice, give the guy a fucken break you fucken CHokumoron, you can see in the first 2 minutes the team is not going to win. might as well pull him and give Bauld the aggravation.

And one last thing fuck your fucken slip of paper, you think sliding that out of your fucken drab-ass jacket's going to motivate you some Habs?

@Soperman, interesting about Louis Leblanc. Yes, if he keeps turning his back on hits, when he turns pro next year (he's 20) he will be the latest concussion victim we will be talking about. I'll keep a close eye on him if they end up playing Saint John.
Oh yeah, Cape Breton gone. As requested. You're welcome.

@bea, I hear you. Couldn't even be bothered to put the game on last night. Watched American idol (sort of) with Mrs. Maritimer. What does that tell you. I had the Sea Dogs game on the radio with ear phones. Much more interesting.

@whither, you, along with quite a few posters over at H/IO and including myself have guessed that the Chara incident has rocked this team pretty hard. It is broken. No response on any level to that hit with the exception of being humiliated in Boston. Travis Moen and Ryan White try their best but they are usually out matched. Mara can only do so much. Some of your top 6 has to be able to play through the rough stuff or be able to even get to the dirty areas. Not these guys. They peel off or hold upgoing to the corners. The other teams defensmen know they will not be under pressure whereas Montreal's defense take a constant pounding on the forecheck. The tougher D are too slow and the younger faster guys (Subban, Weber) can only do so much being rookies. The jig is up for this bunch. I feel bad for Price, he is basically hung out to dry most nights now and I don't blame him for being pissed.

Even with Markov and Gorges back they would still struggle to score goals. They need help up front. Over to you Pierre.

Well fuck.

That didn't go as planned. There was supposed to be glory basking today! Fuckers. I watched the game on fast forward from 4-1 on. Gill still looked slow. Gomez skated really fast over the O-blue line and gave the puck away really, really fast. You know what weebles do fucking fall down - Sopel & Hamrlik (Oh speaking of that, I was watching the SCORE ticker on Tuesday night and they were crediting the Habs' first goal to Hamrkil (Hammer Kill) Anyway. He's been doing more hammer licking than killing so whatever. Fortunately, the Habs always beat Marty Brodeur...

Bah. I'm starting to get a headache. Gotta go. Losing all hints of optimism.

Oh yeah, thanks for the Cape Breton thing. Your city has earned a lot of good will in Halifax. If you are sporting your Saint John sticker feel to park in a no parking zone the next time you are in town. :o)

I expect the FHF have either joined that weird Quecbec cult that clones humans, or are working on a masterpiece that will heal the trauma.

Alain - fair enough, forgot about the concussion. Certainly the big hit on AK46 a few years back affected him for over a year and may still be affecting him. But D'Agger's performance tailed off well before the concussion... he was great at the start and then tailed off (statistically) pretty soon. I guess he wasn't ready, and the the bang on the head set him back another year or so...
