Let's Heritage the shit out of this weekend - Flames preview and open thread sponsored by Tim Hortons

Forgive me in advance for waxing poetic, but if any game calls for it, this is it.

I must admit to being an unabashed fan of outdoor hockey. While I grew up in the city and thus as far away from a "pond" as humanly possible, many, many days and nights of my youth were spent on the outdoor rink at the park just down the street from my house (park satellite image obviously taken in summer). I really do have the stereotypical Canadian memories of my mom coming to tell us it was "9 PM for fuck's sake, get your stupid ass back in the house it's your bedtime" (mom swore like a sailor even back then). I can just picture my friends and I out there, at -20 Celsius even, just wanting to play. I recall the times we told the city worker to go away when he wanted to resurface the ice because it would mean 30 minutes we couldn't play. I remember the wacky boards we had, with no curved corners and set up as a parallelogram rather than a rectangle. I remember digging through the snow to find our last puck after it flew over the boards. I remember the glorious, glorious relief I felt when I finally took off my 1970's-era Bauers (wearing extra socks because Mom bought them a size too big because "you'll grow into them") after skating practically non-stop for five hours. These were amazing, simpler times that I remember very fondly, and no doubt many of you have similar memories. The outdoor hockey game is a quintessentially Canadian tableau. I guess Vermonters, Michiganders, North Dakotans or Finns for that matter did the same thing, but it's not the same. In Canada those outdoor rinks and ponds meant everything because hockey means everything to a Canadian kid, unlike the Michigan kid who was just biding time 'til Little League season, or the Finnish kid who went cross-country skiing on the weekends. In Canada, it's our shared Heritage.

So what does all this have to do with the 2011 NHL Tim Hortons Heritage Classic? Dick all. The Tim Hortons Heritage Classic is about the NHL seeing a very successful college stunt and thinking holy shit, we can capitalize on this. We can expand our audience, get some press, sell 50,000 tickets instead of 20,000, sell some toques, and sell some admittedly delicious sugary treats. And now doing it repeatedly. All of it under the guise of it being "traditional" and "playing to hockey's heritage." Yeah, whatever. My park didn't have heated benches (or any benches) and didn't have 50,000 people watching (or anyone watching). FFS, it didn't even have nets. Using boots for goalposts is our Heritage. A made-for-TV event is not.

With that said, an NHL game in a football stadium is still pretty fucking cool, no matter how many times they do it. So let's get in the spirit and sell some admittedly delicious sugary treats while we set this one up.

The first double double of the morning - before the THHC even starts, we get a warmup today with the alumni game. It goes at 6:30 PM EST, and it's on RDS (CBC has banished it to online only). I cannot wait for the return of Jyrki Lumme. That guy ruled. And maybe Sergio Momesso brought some delicious sandwiches with him, and Lanny McDonald can spend the game picking crumbs out of his mustache.

Waiting patiently in line for your morning fruit explosion muffin behind that guy who hems and haws when ordering and takes forever, even though he's there EVERY FUCKING DAY - 6 PM EST start tomorrow. On CBC, and Versus for you 'mericans. The Habs won the only other meeting so far this season, the crazy 5-4 win last month when we blew a four goal lead only to have PFK celebrate his OT winner to the disgust of everyone outside Montreal. The Flames are the much better team right now though, going 7-1-2 over their last 10. As for the Habs, well, we suck right now.

Like uh, Dunkin Donuts I guess? Dome Beers remains our favourite Flames blog, what with all the half-naked chick pics on there. And you know, beer.

As sweet as a 20-pack of Timbits you scarf down all by yourself. Hey, don't blame me for eating them all, I was high at the time - DDD is our best offensive player right now I guess, with 7 points in his last 5 games. That's both exciting and disturbing. DDD is also responsible for a CHicken resurgence. The Flames have hot players up the wazoo right now, with Jokinen, Bourque, Regehr all scoring, and Kipper playing well between the pipes.

As cold as a large Iced Cap - do I have to say it? Tits pointless in 8, brainless in 59. The whole defense as a group really shat the bed against the Oil, but Paul Mara will rescue us all. Flames and their 7-1-2 record don't really have much to be chilly about, except for maybe the temperatures expected at McMahon this weekend.

Exciting like one of those temporary donut flavours you fall in love with only to see them disappear after a month or two - Squid!!! SQUEEEEEE!!!! Looks like Squid (who actually played in that first Michigan - MSU Cold War game) will make his return after missing 12 games. Not only that, Hal Gill looks to return as well to help shore up the D after missing 4. Even CHeez Whiz, so horribly disfigured in the last game, has a real chance of playing.

Like a hot chocolate after the game - if all the models of the SI Swimsuit Issue can't warm you up, you may be suffering from death.

Let's hear your rink and pond stories and / or fave Tim Hortons treat in the comments

Radcliff, I knew a girl who lived there, and I used to take my clubs on my bike to get in 9 at Wentworth before it got dark. Played at Loyola ( Coronation ) park and remember walking home with frozen feet. Funny how life can be good even when your feet are frozen.

Yup, played outdoor hockey at Lucerne in Laval (outside the arena, talk about piss-poor)using boulders from the many construction sites in Vimont, Laval to make our nets!

Thanks for all the "Tim Hortons" name-drops, now I'm in the mood for a Fucking Double-Double - Ass!

Great preview 29. Love the memories. Had similar ones in Galt, ON. My goalie pads use to get soaked. Might explain why I have such strong legs. Weird how we would never want the game to end. Even when our buds left one after one and we were down to 3 aside, still playing. Getting home for a hot bowl of tomato rice soup (and Ritz crackers with butter), toes still tingling from the thaw. Glass of milk never tasted better. I think I hear Danny Gallivan's voice.

UK3X said...

@29 - your aticle brought back memories of my youth in the Laurentians. We would have snowbanks on the sides of the boards that were 7-8 feet high. Standing at our benches, frozen feet and trying to wear a tuque inside a helmet - never cool but when it was -30 you had no choice. The local fire department volunteers used to drill a hole in ice on the lake and drag the pump out to flood the ice - man the memories are just flowing back. Man I hope we win tomorrow!

Great stories, guys.

Anyone watching the alumni game? Kirk Muller in a toque? Yes, please.

Oh yeah and my favourite Timmy Ho's treat has to be that apple/cinnamon doughnut thingy. Dee-lish.

Quote maCHine;

Gainey discussed many things about the Habs and the NHL in general, and had strong words for the players who are expressing their displeasure with Habs rookie defenceman P.K. Subban.

"(Subban) is a very talented player," Gainey said. "Anyone who's met him knows that his personality is outgoing, overflowing, and it hasn't yet been tempered with full maturity. I think he should have fun and play. Some of those people should shut up and play against him. Just keep their mouths shut and play.

"He doesn't have a big, tough guy playing beside him to look after him, he looks after himself. Not everybody else in the league who is an outgoing above-average player plays in that position. I think Montreal is lucky to have him and the NHL is lucky to have him."

Number31 said...

Bob Gainey is the voice of God.

Also Lidstrom had nothing but praise for our PK.

Why doesn't the media latch onto these quotes but instead focuses on the garbage?

In other news, Price's HC mask makes me think if anyone crashes into him tomorrow, he'll eat their liver with fava beans.

morning all. beautiful day for some outdoor hockey. let's play 2!

@gazeux - no, I went to Edinburgh. knew plenty of people at EBS tho.

Fuck that Bob Gainey dude is awesome. we should hire him to be GM or something

for the record, sour cream glazed TImbits, fruit explosion muffins, and double chocolate donuts

Orangeman said...

@moe: Holy crap, Campbelle's Tomato Rice Soup! I loved the shit out of that stuff. They don't even make it anymore (I seriously led a letter-writing campaign when they discontinued it).

Nice preview 29. My outdoor rink didn't have boards, we were that hickish in good 'ol Barrie, Ontario (this was back in the late 80s-90s before the population doubled/tripled). I sucked at skating which led to my time as goalie (wish I could say I was like Roy, but my flopping and violent temper was more reminiscent of Hextall). There were some houses that backed onto the rink and by 10pm they would start yelling at those of us with neglectful parents to shut up and go home. JUST ONE MORE GOAL! But there was always more than just one more. My elementary school also had a rink so we'd all bring our sticks on the school bus everyday to play at lunch. Every minute we could possibly squeeze in. Winter gym class was great, just go play hockey if you want or stay inside and play dodgeball. No one played dodgeball, not even the girliest of girls.

And then I got a job and discovered beer and pot and Nirvana and got fat and lazy and now I think walking to the booze store instead of driving is exercise. But those memories are nice and I allow the NHL to exploit them.

More Bob;

On Mario Lemieux's statement last week that the league didn't go far enough in its discipline after a brawl between his Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders: "I think Mario is in a really good position to speak his mind. He's been in many different positions over different generations of players in the NHL. I think changes can always be made and should be made.

"With his stature spearheading movement or discussion on changes is an excellent thing."

Anonymous said...

Fuck Bettman and his comments if anyone read the article brought to you by HIO. I say it's high time for the CHL -- Canadian Hockey League. Anyone behind me on a push for this movement?!

Number31 said...

Yea...I was completely flabbergasted when I heard what Bettman said about the Oilers and how quick he'd be up to moving them. What a fucking hypocrite.

Perhaps Wayne Gretzky needs to pull a Mario Lemieux with the Oilers and blackmail the city of Edmonton to build a new arena... (Funny how no one dares to say it like that publicly eh? That is essentially what he did).

moeman said...

Grab your barf bags FHFers cuz the cbc pukefunnel is in full bile mode;

"We join millions of fans in congratulating Don on his new contract and wishing him continued success as the declarative voice of CBC's definitive hockey broadcast," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

"Don's knowledge of the sport is exceeded only by his love for it and we are proud of his enduring connection with the game and the National Hockey League. He truly is one of a kind, and it is an honour to consider him a friend."

L Dude said...

Ahh fuck moe. Thanks for that - I hadn't heard. So of course I go over to cbc to read the story. BARF! "blah blah congrats to Don on behalf of millions of Canadians blah blah..."

And at the bottom of the page:
This story is closed to commenting.
Yeah, I wonder why the fuck that is? Maybe because of the other millions of Canadians who might want to know how much of our taxpayer money is being doled out to this biggoted arsehole? Just maybe. FUCK.

L Dude said...

Oh, BTW, my apologies, but like a good car accident, I can't help hopping over to Eklund's site now and again. Don't bother watching the Heritage Classic because"*I am also told that following the classic Montreal could be very interesting to watch tonight...

So, AFTER the game is when Montreal will be interesting to watch. So keep your eyes open AFTER the game. I (LD) expect we'll just see something small like Gomez, AK and Weber stay behind in exchange for Iginla and Boumeester.

GO you cold MF Habs GO!

moeman said...

Good stuff LDude.

Wonder if the cbc/hnic has the blue balls to bring Mario on their biased show? mclame looked like he was about to puke when cherry, aka, #1 leaf fan, started his shit-filled rant. Bizarro.

And here I thought with the world watching we'd finally get a fair game...

iRiRi said...

cbc = creepy.

Orangeman said...

Gomez has his stick hacked out of his hands right in front of the ref. PLAY ON.

I hate being a paranoid complainer, but at least try to hide it a bit better.

Orangeman said...

Oh Squid, I miss that. Even though CBC treated it like an icing, that was beauty even if you didn't score.

Orangeman said...

Run at Price. PLAY ON.

Young HF29 said...

can no one make a decent stick anymore?

Orangeman said...

And now the linesman stops an outlet pass and almost sets up a Flame chance. I'm actually sure that was accidental, but COME ON.

Kate said...

Whether the refs are biased or not would be irrelevant if the Habs would just score some fucking goals.

moeman said...

Despite the gimme Calgary-based homer refs-only 5-3 goal, the Habs have played well.

Orangeman said...

Show all the players, Habs and Flames, huffing and puffing. Gomez with a relaxed rhythm.

Orangeman said...

@moe: yeah, well I'm liking Mex as much as another famous Alaskan who is known for 'earning' more than she's worth.

moeman said...

jim hughson is a frozen dick.

Orangeman said...

Although the shots are unbalanced, I thought it was an alright period besides the gimme 5on3. Not a great period, much to improve on, but an improvement from EDM. Price is doing well. At this point if we don't lose another 3 Dmen I'll call it a victory.

Sorry, always have a hard time accepting that the only two penalties in any period happen to take place mere seconds apart to the same team. But I'll let it go.

Number31 said...

Bourque has as many shots on net as the entire Habs team... While Gio's PK unit shit the bed on his goal by just standing around.

I see this new venue changes nothing. It's 35-thousand people freezing their asses off to see the Calgary Ronald McDonalds vs Carey Price.

Orangeman said...

The thing Cherry really doesn't get is that it's not that we don't want fighting in the game, but that's not all we want. It's a (small) part of the game, but if you're only good at fighting you just don't fit in the NHL.

Ok, those shots of guys holding hands or whatever while their teammates fight is cute. My sister would swoon over that.

They played alright in the 1st, nothing great. They opened the 2nd well and then thought god himself would finish their PP for them and proceded to give up a shorty. Then they turned into the team we're much too used to and gave up another easy one. Now meh. They've already given up.

But, hey, at this point last time the Habs were up 4-0 so anything's possible.

Let's just face it. They are not good enough. The western swing and the Christmas road trip produce the same results every year. I submit the playoff run last year was just smoke and mirrors and a hot goalie.

I saw them win 10 Stanley Cups since 1968. I'm starting to think I may never see another. The past glories are getting farther and farther away.

Orangeman said...

I'm just pissed that this is how they approach an outdoor game. All that hype, all that "AWESOME DUDE!" and this is what they do. It's embarrassing as a fan. Not because our team is losing, but our team obviously has no passion and everyone is watching. It's hard to defend being so passionate about a team that obviously does not give a shit. You just end up looking like an obsessed ex parked acrossed from her bedroom window.

Or is that just me?

We are hard on our team and we are also just 50+ comments from fucking cold as ice cream.

On a completely unrelated note, my sister's place is on the 15th floor with an awesome view of TO downtown and the CN tower (so this is what dropping out of school gets you...huh) and it's become so foggy in the last couple of hours I can't even see anything outside. That ruins my tradition of getting drunk and cursing the Tower.

Or, again, is that just me?

the Maritimer said...

When I'm sitting here typing comments, it shows how interested I am in watching this shitshow. Many commenters over at HIO say how much potential the Habs have coming down the pipeline and the future is so bright. Sorry, don't agree. This team is doomed to wallow in mediocrity based on the fact they can finish in the top 16 every year. Well, I'm fucking sick of that too. Goat, start selling your veterans and do the Ottawa fire sale. Philly finished dead last a couple years ago and now are legit contenders. Of course, they have a GM willing to gamble trading away assets (1st round picks) to build a winner now. What a concept.

Oh yeah, I won't be watching Tuesday night either. I wouldn't waste a minutes sleep on this bunch.

moeman said...

Agree with Moey.

If the Goat unloads Mex for an enCHilada with out without extra CHeese we'll be unburdened.

moeman said...

with out without = with or without

WHAT A FUCKING SUCK FEST!

wv : I am full of ragis!

Kate said...

@maritimer,

They'd be in a better place right now with Markov & Gorges in the lineup. But still, we can't score for love nor money. Same story as last year Price needs a shutout to win a game.

Number31 said...

Maritimer, doesn't matter who they put on this roster. If you have a coach who keeps fucking around with things that work (like putting Wiz on the wrong side after he scored all his goals on the other, or hell just now putting Wiz with Hamr on the first PP wave when it was always Wiz/PK the first real good pairing) you'll just end up with the same results. Get a proper coach who uses his players properly!

@moe: yes we are hard on our team and we should be. This isn't the Altanta Thrashers. This is the Montreal motherfucking Canadiens. When I was growing up I always expected them to compete, not for 1st or for a playoff spot, but for the goddamned CUP. Then around 1995 I discovered LSD and things got fuzzy until around 2000. I graduated high school, moved back to Montreal and possibly fathered one or more illegitimate children, but apparently something happened to our boyz. But then when they sucked I knew it was because they, well, sucked. When Saku was captain I never doubted their passion. Now I know they can do better, not win every game but do better. And they just don't. And it hurts.

Or it's the flashbacks. Seriously, I don't remember 95-00, but I think I might have been my HS's valedictorian, possibly a used winnebago salesman, and the first Ontario guy to win Father of the Yeaf 3 years in a row.

But I digress.

moeman said...

0-man, that was good stuff. Like you I am hard on my Habs.

collie campbell is hammered.

Orangeman said...

I do feel bad for those guys who do give a shit. Price, PK, Squid (he's injured), to extent Gio, the Big Cheeze for coming back. That's...it. On a 25 man team. sigh.

Anonymous said...

Is there a player besied prices, PK or Plek that is consistent... or gives a fuck?
Does Martin himself gives a fuck????????????????

BENCH AK46 & THE MEXICAN NOW!!!!!!

Number31 said...

All those "shots" on Kipper, if that's the best they can do they should be removed from the NHL.

Kate said...

To cap off this suckfest, tomorrow on the Team 990 it will be Marinaro & company crapping all over them, rubbing salt in the wound. So much to look forward to.

Orangeman said...

Wow, haven't been paying attention (no reason to) and suddenly we're 7 mins into the 3rd.

le sigh.

moeman said...

@Moey, don't listen to 990.

Goat should pull a Lou and can Chocula, replacing him with Captain Kirk. Beam him up Goat!

moeman said...

The ice is shiny.

Orangeman said...

All jokes aside, we're the first team to get shut out in one of these games. CBC, TSN, the leaf, everyone, will never let us forget that. Again, it's not the shutout, it's the fact you go to one of the biggest games of your life and come up with a 'meh'. It's embarrassing as a fan.

moeman said...

Nothing against the Flames (what a fucking stupid name) but I hope they don't make the playoffs (if only because simpson has their dick deep in his throat).

Number31 said...

I've had enough of Hamr. Someone with a young team could surely take him for a draft pick, right?

Kate said...

@moe,

Even Melnick's wheels have fallen off, since that Boston fiasco we're doomed for all eternity against the Bruins. *rolls eyes*

moeman said...

@Moey, never liked melnick as he is a mcsplooge lover.

Anonymous said...

Kirk Muller will NEVER become Habs head coach as long he can't speak le french.
Moe: you should know that.

Kate said...

@moe,

I used to turn a blind eye to that fact but he's not getting a pass anymore. You're right, that was a huge red flag.

Number31 said...

Yea I noticed that about Melnick since the Boston game. (Which, contrary to his thought on it, Habs were only down by 2 and if they could care to play defense wouldn't have been so bad). Usually he's one of the reasonable media dudes in town but lately he's been a bit insane.

As it stands...watching The Cape is probably better than this game.

moeman said...

See kids, cbc/hnicis raving Kipper. Kudos for todays game but they have rag'd him hard forever. Just a game. We wanted better. No sleep lost but maybe CHocula should sweat.

Now 4-0. eesh.

Orangeman said...

What else is there to say?

Number31 said...

Way to cover the back door, guys!

Anonymous said...

Carey Price will become a star elsewhere starting in 2012-13. (tampa?)

Other than that, Habs are pathetic. No heart.
AK46 has no balls & no spine: a pussy-boy. Same for half that shit team.

moeman said...

Tough trip kidz. Stick by your team. Make the playoffs and see what is dealt.

Anonymous said...

" Make the playoffs and see what is dealt."

Get blown out in 4. That's what.

moeman said...

squid77, blowhard burkian belief ain't becoming.

CHocula just threw the towel on this one...

Some Great game by Edmonton-East tonight.

Number31 said...

Gargamel says Habs have this loosy-goosey "it's an experience" feel, while the Flames are all business. JMart's answer is to squint more!

Anonymous said...

Glad to see AK46 did not hurt his bum when he fell on that Hammer shot...

Orangeman said...

@moe: I will always stick by my Habs, I will watch on Tuesday in Vancouver. But it's become clear that I care more about the CH than most of the guys on the ice (and behind the bench and in the front office). I won't be a leaf fan. Gomez being on the ice, nevermind getting the time he is, is an afront to me.

Sky is falling, all that BS. I didn't expect my team to win the Cup, or finsh 1st, or even necessarily win this game. But getting shut out for an outdoor game and just giving up? It's just too much at this point. I am not a leaf fan and I will not suck a limp dick.

Anonymous said...

Nice to see kostopoulos.

Orangeman said...

I will notice, however, that the last two HNIC where Price had a shutout in the 3rd CBC couldn't stop saying shutout yet tonight it's a holy word.

Also, it's depressing that you know they'll get shut out by 10min of the 2nd period.

GYF...Whatever.

Kate said...

Fuck the Flames. They'll crash and burn just like the Canucks in the post season.

I'm still pissed at our boys.

Number31 said...

Shake hands even though they had a bad game. At least they still have their sportsmanship...?

moeman said...

Nice catCH 0-man but bob cold is the shutout fuckerupper. glenn healey is an hnic hack but needs a prop or probe. Regardless, he is a lubricated fucker.

Kate said...

@moe,

I think it's safe to say if Gauthier stands pat he's given up on this year.

Orangeman said...

I'm drunk. Therefore I am reasonable (that's how it works, right?)

I read that after the EDM game the owners took everyone out for a dinner and it was happy-go-lucky and full of laughs. Sorry, if I sucked as much as they have at my job the only time I saw my boss would be in his office to be reprimanded. The guys were smiling while shaking hands after the game. You got shut out and lost an important late season game while battling for playoff position. SMILES! No.

If they were angry, if they slapped thier sticks, if they fucking hung their heads for two seconds, ok. But no. Losing is ok. As I said, I will not be a leaf fan. I will not accept that.

Can't wait to see how they look against the Canucks because, of course, I'll be watching.

Oh and I'm just here for the ice cream.

Very true Moey. Maybe the Goat will surprise us. If not its white knuCHle time.
