The Morning Skate for Friday, May 28th

Bullet points for what you missed while dreaming of the elimination of the penny...
  • Holy crap, there is some actual news! Of a Habs nature! All sorts of reports have the NHL announcing today that the Caps and the Pens will play the Winter Classic in Pittsburgh. Ha! That's not the news. The news is that there will be a second outdoor game, the Habs and Flames at McMahon Stadium, sometimes in February. Pre-game tailgating at Panger's house! The game will be celebrating the fact that a Chinook can make Calgary +15 Celsius in February;
  • It will cost you more to go the Bell Centre next year. Stop complaining, you can afford it;
  • Who wants to chip in with us to buy Paul Henderson's Game 8-worn 1972 jersey?
  • This year's Russian players to the KHL rumours include Kovalchuk and Frolov;
  • Apparently the Stanley Cup Finals start tomorrow night at 8 PM in Chicago. Consider that your preview.
BTW, when we wrote previously that we'll have a Pantscast "in the coming days" we of course meant "in the coming weeks." It's scheduled though, and it has a special guest! We hope Mom of HF29 likes Hurleys.

The NHL told the Russkies that if they steal their stars there won't be any NHL players at the 2014 Olympics.

I'm referring to Kovalchuk. Frolov can go where he wants.

For no other reason but to instigate discussion...Where were you when Henderson scored "The Goal"? I was in the living room of my house at 16 Island lake, Quebec, my parents had one of those televisions that sat inside a huge piece of colonial furniture. The shag pile was black with white specks...that's all I got...oh yea - I was 8

wv: gotta run - my laptop warning buzzer is brepring

In '72 I was 11, in Grade 8, at school watching with 500 other kids in the auditorium. I wore pants then but not now.

I was in Grade 1 at Tarentorus Public School, watching the game on the tv in the library with the rest of my class.

sadly, I was oblivious to the very existence of hockey as my family had not emigrated yet to the land of outdoor rinks and hockey fanatics.

In '72, my parents were planning their wedding for the next year and then wait 7 years to release me into this world.

But I have the movie of the '72 series. It's awesome.

@ Moeman

You must have skipped a few grades to be 11 in grade 8. That or you started school at 3.

I was 11, in grade 6 and still camping at Sherwood Forest in the Valley (Nova Scotia). Hmmm, maybe the fact that we were still camping in September and not in school was one of the reasons I was only in grade 6. Anyway, we were all down in the lodge (maybe 50 kids), watching the game on a very small black and white TV.

If a chinook hits we can play those "Flamers" at ball hockey.

@Number31

'72 was also 7 years pre-Hadulf. I also have the movie. Awesome. Too bad I was still swimming in my daddy's balls and I missed the real thing...

@sope, I started school at 4 and skipped kindergarden to 'protect' my sister and begin in the same grade as her. I missed the entire look up the teacher's skirt whilst napping year. Yes I made up for it later. Girls are fun.

Ahhh, Henderson's goal. I was bouncing around in my dad's jeans as he somehow convinced my mother to marry him later that year.

Ok, done throwing up.

Re: Outdoor game in Calgery. I love it, I have already started planning my trip out there. I'm not going to say that MTL had a game already and they should give it to someone else (valid argument, but shut up), however it should be in Montreal. This is the second time for the Habs, so when do you think it'll be them again, especially in Bettman's league? Never, that's when. Which means it'll never get to Montreal, the city.

Habs-Leafs home and home, SkyDome and Olympic Stadium. Or Varsity Stadium and McGill. Flames and Oil home and home. errr....Sens and, um, Nucks. For some reason.

Point is, Youppi for special guest. Don't make me create a facebook page! (or figure out how to do that!)

@kmaxx (and GG) - henderson? i was still a twinkle in the squishiness of my mother's placenta.

i heard it was an important goal though.

habs news: we signed some US defensman, Kyle Klubertanz, who played in Swiss league last season. apparently good skater and awesome puck mover. drafted by ducks, 2004 (3rd round).

and the habs development camp has been moved from the usual july to june... maybe in hopes of getting yemelin over before july 1.

i'm guessing kk will spend the year in hamilton but could give gautier options during the summer or before trade deadline if he pans out. yemelin could theoretically take a spot right away. markov/yemelin pairing?

Am I the only one who wants to see golf clubs in the hands of the FHF icons at the top of the page? The best way to attack defeat/depression is to mock it. Let's summer-ize these guys.

Caps/Pens in Pittsburgh is terrible when one considers the better rivalry options available. Sidney vs Ovie be damned. Of course, the NHL has already fucked this up by going Bruins/Flyers this year instead of Bruins/Habs at Fenway or saving Bruins/Rangers for New York. Islanders/Rangers would be better, Leafs/Habs somewhere or Leafs/Wings at Ford Field, someone mentioned Canucks/Avs in Denver. Even Pens/Flyers at Penn State would have been genius. Minnesota just got two new outdoor stadiums too. The NHL wasted Fenway and screwed at least two or three other potential future matchups going Bruins/Flyers (an interesting rivalry, but not nearly as good as some others). The problem they are going to run into soon is getting compelling games in cold-weather cities. No one wants to see Atlanta or Tampa against New Jersey in the Swamp, do they?

As for Montreal/Calgary, I like that the NHL recognizes Montreal's appeal but Flames/Oilers or Flames/Canucks would be a much more compelling matchup. Of course, the Flames to me are one of the least interesting franchises around, so if they wanted a Western tilt I would have left them out entirely.

@moeman

I knew there was an entertaining explanation, I just wanted to hear it. :o)

You would not have missed much at our school, the teacher was about 178 and she did not wear pants.

WV - exilenev as in "If Kovolchuk and Frolov go to the KHL, they will be exilenevs." reaching???

Boob Gainey said...

Kovalchuk should come to Montreal.

How about an outdoor game with Florida and Phoenix?

Christopher Sama said...

if the nhl really wanted to promote the game in europe, they'd have an outdoor game there either right before or after the x-mas break or right before the all-star break. (so as to have enough travel time wihtout disrupting schedules)

redwings vs canucks in stockholm?
washington vs montreal in moscow?

no way owners/nhl/nhlpa would let that happen...

@Kmaxx - like some others here, I was taken out of class to watch on one of those black and white TVs up on the high, wheeled stands, with about 100 other excited grade one to three kids. I was 8 and I guess I was just starting grade 3. At the time it seemed like it was as important as the first moon landing; actually, it still does. (I think they brought us out to see some of the other Apollo missions, but they were definitely not as exciting). I was already a Habs fan then, but I don't think I really knew or cared much about the Canadian but not Canadien players on the team.

@moe - you bring back fond memories of being dragged kicking and screaming out of class by my kindergarten teachers. Fortunately the cute one had me by the arms, and I keenly observed that under her skirt she wore sheer pantyhose but no panties. (Or least that is how it seemed to me - she let me go quickly once she realized what I was up to, so I wasn't able to quite complete my thorough inspection. I was in French immersion, so it's possible that I was right.) That was probably my best day that year.

Le Douze said...

To explain the bit about "no panties", I should explain that at least in the (WASP) neighbourhood where I grew up, everyone knew that pantyhose were the modern replacement for the girdle and stockings, to be worn over panties. The idea that a girl might wear pantyhose WITHOUT panties was ..., my, oh, my ... really quite shocking, and definitely worth a second look, if not a third. But it was really pretty unbelievable.

I call Klubertanz "Clubbertank". No reason except that's how I picture Don Cherry trying to pronounce it.

Ooooh TWO development camps? Woot!
