Here's an idea

This team is stumbling into the playoffs rudderless and all over the place. Right now if I had to say who was the Habs' leader, it would be Kirk Muller. That's ridiculous.

I don't know if naming a captain on the eve of the playoffs would be unprecedented, but it certainly would be bold. Can you do bold, Count Chokula? I thought not. But if you change your mind, here's our choice. Anyone who has watched all 82 games this year would make the same one.

It might give us a chance. I said might.

Or they could name AK captain just to fuck with us.

I think they're holding it for PK in 3 years. Why else wouldn't we have one by now haha?

No one else deserves it. Except maybe Markov or Gill.

WOOHOO! Playoff beard time!

Or maybe they will announce a four year extension for Pleks and give him the 'C' before Thursday.

Yeah, this team doesn't do shit like that.

@Jaybird - Gionta deserves the C. More than Gill and, dare I say it, Markov.

I've been pulling for this for a while, mais bon. I understand that it won't happen a) because it smacks of desperation and b) because it might really piss Vodkov off.

But, the real reason why they won't do it is because of c) it would be a gutsy, unprecendented move.

I would apply gutsy as an adjective for many players (including the SKATING AND SHOOTING fer chrissakes Metro).

But not to this organization.

I just see confidence in Gill even after he makes a huge mistake. His facial expressions just scream leader.

I like Gionta but to have a Captain "C" on a man who is 5'6, well, just seems like a bullseye to me...adding more physical targets to our undersized scorer.

@ Jaybird:

Cournoyer, Yvan. 5'7"

Richard, Henri. 5'7"

Fleury, Theoren. 5'6"

I think Gio would do alright.

@ 10
Don't forget Matts.
Hobbits can play this game.

I'm with hon77, apart from maybe dissing Vodkov give the 'C' to Gionteau!
(slight name CHange to keep the pure woolers happy).

Cammeltoe should get the C

mr. gillis said...

or Gill, cause his name is almost the same as mine, and I guess he seems like a good leader

I'm on thw Gio for Captain bandwagon - but then again last week at this time I was on the "shoot the whole fuckin' lot" bandwagon and you can see how long that lasted - but we definitely need someone wearing the "C" who is going to be a round for a while and is committed to the cause. PK is a long way from being ready for the "C". I mean, can you imagine the press - they'd have a field day. Which brings up a question - has any Brand New Hab come straight in and worn the "C without a wait?

wv - paron - as in didn't we once win a Cup with a coach named paron?

Gio has my vote
(along with anything else he wants to have).
anybody who never quits shoul dget the kudos he deserves by someone other than bloggers (YEAH Count I'm looking at you)
all together

ONE, one captain AHAHAHAHAHAh

WV how much of a ricsp coul dit be togive the C to a very deserving player who depsites in not so diminutive in real life size parks his ass in the F'ing crease

back to the CBC...

I like classical music and jazz, and CBC Radio Two used to be a pretty good source of both types of music. The hosts were by and large intelligent and interesting.

Since their makeover a couple of years ago it's all dinner party music for Toronto yuppies. It is complete shit almost 24 hours a day. Whatever the genre, classical, jazz or that shitty mid-tempo country rock crap whose only virtue is that it doesn't cause road rage, it's never challenging or interesting.

Fuck those philistines and their fucking Don Cherry biopic.

Gionta for Captain! I like it! So much heart, never takes a shift off and ALWAYS goes into the dirty areas even though he is most likely knocked down right after he scores!

Go Habs Go!!!

I'd have no problem with Gionta for C. I wouldn't object to Cammi, Marky, or even Pleks.

I think they Habs brass probably have their reasons for not naming a Captain and they know more than I do about the locker room dynamic.

Still, if we're worried that there won't be anyone to receive the Stanley Cup from GB, then I'm quite happy crossing that bridge when we come to it.

GO HABS!

The problem with a captain is that he would have the right, if not the duty, to talk to the Coach. And while publicly quiet, I think it is pretty clear that you don't talk back to JM. One night he even turned his back on Perry Pearn in the middle of a sentence by Pearn on camera. I think your dead on when you say Kirk Muller is the guy. Tradition is that the C is elected in Montréal, not selected. Not part of the kool-aid. The question is can JM avoid his history of getting there and choking, and the team started choking a week ago. To be successful this time of year the game has to be fun. The players aren't getting paid, they are playing for fun and pride.

Why would Markov be pissed? He turned it down at the beginning of the year. Markov may be the most talented player at his position, but he is an "A" not a "C". He does lead by example. Gionta for Captain - I love it.

The Count will just have to suck it up.

lawyergirl77 said...

Actually, the report that he had turned it down turned out to be inaccurate... he said earlier this season (recently) that he "wouldn't say no".

I think he's more of an A too, but WTF do I know? I'm not in the locker room with the guys...

mr. gillis said...

Am I the only one whos more scared of Bruce Boudreau out-coaching Martin then Ovechkin out-playing the habs?

WV: coors

soperman said...

@LG77

Thanks for the clarification, that is much different. I hope he is not a sooky-baby.

@Gillis

Boudreau is just a big whiner. He just stands behind the bench and gets angry at the refs. Maybe they will throw his fat ass out of the game....

Scott in Montreal said...

@lg77 - so true about the Habs mgmt lacking courage. It would be a gutsy move, so ixnay on that. But would it seriously inspire the team to play better? Certainly hard to imagine the Giant trying any harder than he already does.

In any event, I think he looks like the most natural leader of this bunch. And - no disrespect to Markov - but Gionta has 100% more Stanley Cup rings than him.

Number31 said...

Well, Boudreau will huff and puff all he wants, he'll get his way regardless... TIM FUCKING PEEL IS WORKING THE FIRST GAME!

I'd make Gio "C". I'd make Metro "C" too. He's taking slapshots already! Then again, I'd have fired Coach Chocula last week.

I'd love to see Gionta as captain, but it kinda seems like we're treading water here. At the beginning of the season we let go our undersized-yet-fearless captain who can't speak French but shows up every night and leads by example for... an undersized-yet-fearless captain who can't speak French but shows up every night and leads by example?
