Time to cut this day loose? News and Notes

For James, this was the Prowlette of the week for November 2007.

Things seem to be happening, none of them Habs-related:
  • Recchi to the Broons;
  • Guerin to the Pens;
  • Foppa finally giving up and retiring;
  • Toskala on IR for the rest of the season, Leafs turn their hopes on Martin Gerber. BWAHAHAHAHA;
  • Maguire is really pissing me off.
C'mon Bob, less than an hour left!

HF29 you are awesome. That put a smile on my face. I'm glad your site isn't blocked by that damned evil firewall too.

I get back from Court to see that Boston, the Pens and fucking Calgary have significantly improved today.

Bob, as always, has stood still.

For the past two years, I understood why he didn't do anything and I applauded it.

This year, I wanna throw things.

he's still got 37 minutes LG!

*sigh* I just wanna go over to the Cage at the Bell Center and start drinking beer now in order to numb the pain.

We'll probably trade for some random right at the last minute, then find out in 2 days that we had offers in for everyone, but were all rejected.

Boo.

lawyergirl77 said...

You know, the trade deadline is like a metaphor for the whole season.

You go into it, thinking that we're contenders and that something cool is going to happen.

Only to left staring at the same shitty hockey team that has let you down so many times in the past.

Bob - the definition of insanity is doing the same thing OVER AND FUCKING OVER AGAIN and expecting a different result. You're getting perilously close to that line, my friend...

Word verification: "fleop". Sans commentaire.

Young HF29 said...

LG did you lose a motion today or something? ;)

i agree though, très frustrante

29 - LOL, you know me so well. (No, I didn't, I actually won. I'm pretty zen at my desk - filled with Mr. Ma's MSG-laden goodness)

I'm just seriously annoyed with BG. The Schneider deal was brilliant, but it was only one piece of the puzzle. And with so many free agents, for whom we'll probably get squat, I'm annoyed. At least try to do little tweaks to make the team better, if only next year. God, even Boston has this figured out...

That being said, I'll be pleased if Dandy doesn't get traded. But because I like the guy, I'll be sad for him because it means that his value is going to be stagnant for next year, which is a shame. He doesn't deserve to be in Carbo's doghouse.

lawyergirl77 said...

Yawn.

Big fucking whoop indeed, 29.

Young HF29 said...

haha thanks TH. actually saw that on CNN this morning

So the Rags overpay for Derrek Morris, the only other guy I'd wanted BG to trade for.
Glad we didn't give up as much as they did on this, but the bottom line is we got fucked.

tsn will have fun ripping the Habs during tonight's game v. BUF. magwired and pang are losers.

so much frustration

but most frustrating by far is guerin for a 5th/4th/3rd round pick. how in the name of god could we not offer something better.

i take it back. pierre maguire just full out called the montreal canadiens losers. i swear if i see him in the streets here in toronto...i'll take the jail sentence for the team

Fuck. I hate trade deadline day.

Buffalo picked up D. Moore from the Laffs. I wonder if he will play tonight? He has 3A in 4 games against the Habs this year.

What's up with habs I/O today?

Anonymous said...

Ah... for some reason I like Moore and thought maybe we could have him. Too bad.

Word verif.: Dially
As in: Gainey hasn't been "dially"ng other GMs a lot today after all.

So the Habs didn't strengthen their roster at the deadline? Well I for one am shocked. Knock me down with a feather, you could.

Ah well, at least we didn't give up Halak for a bag of pucks to prove to Price that he's the #1, eh?

moeman said...

magwired is a putz, inside scoop says he was summarily turned down by the Habs for a front office job a few years back. He even had his friend Scotty Bowman put in a good word for him (why? good ol' piere just rode Mario Lemieux's coattails for 'his' Cup rings). Since being shown the door he's been ripping the Habs at every turn.

Maybe Bob was asleep. Maybe he woke up at 3:01, yawned, looked at his clock. Maybe, for a moment, he lay in bed, relaxing. Thinking about the trade deadline tomorrow, mulling over his plans. Maybe, Bob allowed himself a little chuckle as he thought about the conversation he had with an unnamed GM the day before, and how he was going to steal a great player for virtually nothing.

Maybe then, Bob stretched, and his eyes fell on the clock again. 3:02 now. Maybe in Bob's mind, something clicked. A tiny thing, almost imperceptible. His pre-deadline ritual - waking up late on the day before, ham and eggs for lupper, and watching Ghostbusters before bed - seemed strangely familiar. He made a mental shrug, and started to smell the air for that wonderful eggy smell.

And then, perhaps.. the pieces fell finally into place. This wasn't pre-deadline day... This was DEADLINE day. And the deadline had passed.

Then maybe.. Bob cried salty tears of grief. He had failed his team, his city, his people.

Also, fuck Mats Sundin,

i think i'm with you on this one LG. i've trusted bob since day one, but what i'm seeing now is a reoccurring theme. yeah, he's able to build a solid on=paper team in the off-season, and players get injured and that's not his fault, but it's the lack of the ability to adapt that worries me most.

i'm glad he trusts the team as it is to be a cup contender, but we fans sure as fuck don't.

lawyergirl77 said...

Gate - ITA re: BG's lack of adapting skills. It's the same thing with Carbo. How many times do we come out flying in the first period, only to look like fools in the 2nd/3rd.

It ain't simply because the Canadiens gave up (although that's part of it).

Other teams adjust - Julien is the master of this. Example: Carbo always plays the Lapierre line against the other team's top line. In the first period this works. In the second, the other team adjusts and tries to send their top line out against, say, Koivu's line or, even worse, Pleky's line. Boom - instantaneous goal.

A lack of an ability to adapt seems to be the Habs' hallmark, which sucks. Heck, even the players couldn't adapt to the intensity of the playoffs. It's a systemic problem. Which sucks.

This is why I play video games. When I get home, Gaborik, Kovalchuk and Jokinen are all being traded to the Habs.

Anonymous said...

I don't get it though. Eklund said that Montreal were "about to make a splash". It was an E4 rumour! Don't tell me that he was bullshitting, my heart wouldn't be able to the shock.

Anonymous said...

From HIO:

"General manager Bob Gainey says his phone wasn't ringing off the hook today, and he's confident that the team in uniform now, and to be dressed as players returning from injury, have the goods to get the job done."

Don't buyers usually do the calling, Bob?

heh @ tsn for carrying the entire burkian blowhard presser.

moeman said...

Also, earlier today magwire, aka Habshater, praised burke for being, and I quote, 'magical!'

savardwalsh said...

LG - read my mind completely about carbo. we might have been slightly outplayed by the flyers in last year's playoffs, but more than anything we were outcoached. john stevens figured out how to shut down our only weapon, the power play, and it was almost easy from there. julien did the same thing in the second half of the first round series, and almost pulled off the comeback. a year later and carbo still hasn't caught on.

i'm not in the "fire the coach when things go wrong" camp by any means, i'm just in the "make sure the coach learns how to coach before making him the coach" camp.

Who did you want me to trade? Half the team are UFAs.

Did you want me to trade Higgins for Jokinen?

None of the top teams made major moves. Caps, Devils, Bruins, Sharks, Red Wings.

Teams like the Oilers and Rangers are the real losers.

savardwalsh said...

actually, i would've liked you to offer a 3rd round pick for bill guerin, now that you mention it. thanks for asking.
