Habs Need Some Tits, er, Positive Mojo - Pivotal Game 4 Preview and Open Thread

Big thanks to the Habs Girls group on FB and especially its glorious leader Mike for providing the awesome pic. I only wish I had been the painter.

The word "pivotal" is bandied about quite often when referring to playoff games. "My God, it's the pivotal Game 2!" might not make much sense, but with the Habs down 2-1, you can damn well bet this one fits the description. Come back with home ice advantage for a best of three series, or slink back to Montreal down 3-1 and not a chance in hell of moving on. It's a simple equation. And the Habs need all the positive mojo they can get to find the right side of that equation. So we're gonna try not to be negative for once. Sure, I know that's a change for us, and that's not why you come here, but we gotta try something, right? So go ahead and paint your tits and read these exclamation point-laden bullet points to get your positive juices a-flowin':
  • 7 PM start, Wachovia Center. It's on CBC, so you can watch the fabulous Bob Cole! And the equally fabulous Don Cherry! Like fine wine, age has only made those two guys better;
  • We praise the fine bloggers of the Flyers, Flyers. Femme, eager to go psycho, and Flyers Goal Scored By. Today we add Cuseadelphia to that list. Seem like nice chaps;
  • Breezer is back in the line-up! As Fezworth correctly pointed out in the comments yesterday, we've lost both games with him out. We have been saved!
  • We welcome the return of the delightful Mike Knuble to the Flyers line-up;
  • Who cares which goalie plays for the Habs? They are both wonderful!
  • Habs are kicking ass in the SOG department! 36-23 in Game 2, then 34-14 in Game 3;
  • Martin Biron is undoubtedly a leading Conn Smythe Trophy candidate, and Danny Brière is near the top of playoff scoring. Well deserved!
  • Unrelated to the game, Sean Avery has been hospitalized with a lacerated spleen. We wish him a speedy recovery, he's such a fine amiable fellow that the entire hockey world should rally around.
Too much?

But thanks for the shoutout ;-)

alright i won't mention it again, until we win tonight and the "Breezer streak" (invented by FHF regular fezworth!) takes on a life of its own

Breezermania is taking over.

fezworth said...

You know what's going to happen now? He'll probably score on himself twice in the same shift. He'll somehow manage to score two goals at once.

He'll trip over his own blueline trying to skate backwards while being 'pylonned' by Jim Dowd, and while his arm flings out towards that speedster in a desperate attempt to recapture the glory of his lost youth, the extra puck that got stuck in his equipment during the warmup will jet out like it had been buttered. As Jim "Laser" Dowd's booming slapshot eludes Carey price's glove hand by half an inch, Breezer's puck will slip past him stickside, unnoticed by everyone but the referee, who, in dislocating his shoulder trying to point to the goal, will actually call TWO goals scored against the Habs. The video replay will clearly show that two pucks crossed the line at exactly the same time. The boys in Toronto won't be too sure how to call it, since there is no rule for an extra puck. However, a quick call to Don Cherry will prod them to call BOTH pucks live, and to therefore award Philadelphia two goals on the play.

Philly wins 2-1, takes a 3-1 series lead.

This will forever be known as the 'Breezer'.

fezworth said...

^^^ Now THAT'S a prediction.

Habsfan10 said...

Jaro will then announce he "wood haf stop boat of puck, Mentreal win 1-0. Stupide Big Clown Cari."

Now that pic is more like it! It may be all that is needed to turn this rig around, but just in case...

I had a big history of why this poem is important, but in my cut and paste frenzy, I lost all the good stuff.
Basically, it stated that I posted the poem after games 3 and 6 in Round 1 when Kovy was absolutely invisible and/or horrendous.
The following games (4 and 7), he assisted on both game winners and was 'good Kovy'. The Tits also benefited, especially for game 7.

So, considering Kovy and the Tits took another vacation day during game 3, it feels right:

Oh squiggly line, in my eye fluid.
I see you lurking there on the periphery of my vision.
But when I try to look at you, you scurry away...
Are you shy, squiggly line?
Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the center of my eye?
Oh, squiggly line, it's alright... you're forgiven.

For those unannointed, credit Stewie Griffin by the way.

Prediction:

- Of course, Kovy will assist on the winner (probably by Mark Streit) Breezer and DOOM were the benefits of the past games.

- He will also add another assist and goal for a 3 point night.

- Lil Tits with 2 points, Big Tits with one.

- The rink in Philly will be forever referred to the
WAAH!? Kovy! Yah! Centre from now on. You must use the Moe Schizlak question-tone voice for the WAH!? part....

Young HF29 said...

@free4life - "WAAH!? Kovy! Yah! Centre" - not bad, sir. The outside is really bringing out your cleverness. AND the Family Guy-Simpsons double in one comment. well done.

some news, from Habs I/O:

"Sergei Kostitsyn is a game-time decision, Michael Ryder in the wings if required."

who's Michael Ryder?

/reused joke from 4 days ago

1) @fezworth: That was an epic post. The "Breezer" will surely find its place in folklore tonight.
As an aside, welcome back to the lineup Breeze. Seriously. No kidding.

2) @free4life@: I cannot think of a better time to invoke a 2-0 lucky charm.

3) I posted the text below in the comments for the "Eeny Meeny Miney Mo" post, which was immediately usurped by the game day thread. I shall not be ignored!!!!!.....more than twice.....

I've JUST finished watching game 3 (downloaded it today due to college commitments). Montreal were desperately unlucky to not go into the first intermission with a lead. Three shots off the iron?!? When you have 'luck' like that, coupled with Price playing a Detroit octopus after it's been shovelled from the playing surface, there was only one outcome. I could tell after 1 period.

NOT HAPPY.

PS: Not to get on Price's back or anything but he nearly dropped the puck at the feet of an opposing player AGAIN, as I'm sure you all saw (through your fingers)! Feckin' hell.....

Young HF29 said...

So I'm back from Florida.

But I still can't watch the fucking game tonight due to rehearsals for a show I'm in.

Fuckitty fuck fuck.

When I asked Mr. LG77 how the games have looked lately, he said: "Fucking posts. Fucking Biron. Fucking karma from our series against Boston."

From what I've been reading since my return, I think that's a pretty good summary, no?

Oh, and 29 - the bullets were hilarious. But please don't do that again!!! ;-)

Young HF29 said...

welcome back LG! not to worry, the snark will return at the first sign of Breezer weakness tonight. and Mr LG77 is right on the money. just look at the shot totals from the last two games, and that excludes all the iron we hit

Anonymous said...

Might not be a must win game yet, but it sure is a don't loose game.

Shit, how low can we go, "Brezermania" !

Habsfan10 said...

Would you prefer "Breezerpalooza"? 'Cause I'm okay with that too.

Young HF29 said...

oh man 10. my boss really heard the laugh on that one.

I want a T-shirt that says Breezerpalooza on it

If anyone cares, Uncle George Gillett's other storied club are in serious trouble. Liverpool FC are 3-1 down with less than 15 minutes to go in their European Cup semi-final. I think Gillett is at the game.

Ian Vitro said...

Halak rules. Can`t wait to see him get his shot tonight.

It would make me tremendously happy if Brisebois could be half as invisible as Dandenault for the first two games. Sure he didn`t do much, but at least he didn`t perform the on-ice equivalent of sodomozing an entire city.

It occurs to me that Biron may in fact suck. Too bad we keep throwing pucks at his chest (the on-ice equivalent of a Hot Karl?) or at the posts.

Go Habs Go. We can definitely beat this chump Flyer squad.

@moeman: thx v. much, and congrats on hitting the 40th comment of the night! And still an hour before puck drop, I'm getting a positive feeling here.

I'm hoping to skip outta there early, but we'll see...

42 comments before the game? Woo hoo! Behold, the power of Jaro and Breezerpalooza!!

HFF33 aka Panger said...

Yeah I'm not sure I share your confidence in Halak. I think Price is being benched for not being able to see through solid objects (like Hamr's ass) cause he didn't see at least 2 of the 3 goals from last game. But that being said, clearly the Habs need a spark - but IMHO it has to come from the forwards, not the goalies.

Not that it is ever the goalie's fault!

PPP said...

Hmmm....where is your Messiah now?

(sorry, I've been waiting all year for Carey Price to struggle)

Too much positivity. I come here for the rage. Just like SLC.

moeman said...

So long as your rage is positive ppp.

PPP said...

Positive rage? I can do that. It's tough on Carey to sit but his heads not in the game and the kid will bounce back from it. I hope he doesn't because I am a Leafs fan (ducks) but from what I have seen he will.

I just hope it's a good game.

Go Hockey!

Young HF29 said...

@noda - at least you're getting out of Saskatoon!

(apologies to all of our Saskatoon readers, im sure it's loveley. in fact, I KNOW it's lovely, because it's positive night tonight!)

RDS reports Price may have an injury to his hand which factored into the decision

Nadine said...

@HF29: I am dying of laughter from the positivity.

And, while I know that we all really care about tonight's throw-down between MTL and PHI, I am still stuck on the fact that Avery is out.

Is it wrong that I'm laughing my head off about that? Hmmm...

Nadine said...

BTW, head on over the Sport Squee for Margee's brilliant interview with Avery's spleen.

http://sportsquee.blogspot.com

Young HF29 said...

oh nadine Margee has outdone herself!

Look, you never want to wish ill on someone, but damn, it's Sean Avery! i am amused, to say the least. but you would have expected him to be felled by an STD not a spleen dammit! then we really could have laughed

PPP said...

moeman - right now it stands for Please Play Pogge

HF29 - If Price's hand is hurt then that makes some sense because for his glove hand to suddenly become a weakness is a little suspicious.

Nadine said...

@HF29: Yep, STD had to have the best odds in Vegas. I don't spleen laceration would have even made the list. (Surely, Brodeur was #2 on the list!)

moeman said...

Anyone know if avery will still do his intern gig at Vogue? I'm sending him positive vibes.

Young HF29 said...

@PPP - I agree. And they showed an incident from Game 3 where Price was bumped by a Flyer (dont remember who) and he could have hurt it then

@Nadine - followed by crazy gun-toting ex-boyfriend of one of his conquests. or an Olsen twin

PPP said...

HF29 - Was it the play where he hit Richards? I liked that theory that Cousin Kovalev put up about the goalie coach messing with Price. I have never understood why people try to change natural talent's form. If a kid has a weird swing and hits 40 home runs why mess with it? If Price works as a hybrid goalie? Then why try to make him go full butterfly.

Young HF29 said...

PPP it might have been. i was sort of distracte pouring my whiskey so i wasnt paying 100% attention.

Cousin Kovalev's analysis i thought was excellent. seriously, why the fuck does Price even need a goalie coach? don't fuck with him, just let him play

Young HF29 said...

*distracted. my "d" key is sort of wonky

oh Gui! you could have redeemed yourself right there

can we get the first goal for a fucking change???

fezworth said...

Fuck, I can't deal with this.. one minute in, 90% of the possession, already a good chance, but no goals yet! ARRRGGG!!

But we're stil gonna kick ass.

i finally figured out the flyers strategy in the series, let montreal dominate play for 55 minutes of the game, that way the goalie falls asleep from lack of work and then the flyers take advantage...

Nadine said...

1.) Baby leaf spinach, pears, green bean salad w/balsamic dressing (Most likely choice only because I really went unhealthy for lunch!)

2.) Toasted PBJ sandwich and Bailey's Irish creme Haagen Dazs ice cream

3.) Left over fruit salad with a Red chili hummus, Miracle whip, sweet bologna and American cheese sandwich

4.) Totally pig-out on just the Bailey's Irish creme Haagen Dazs ice cream with a side of Smirnoff vodka and cranberry juice

moeman said...

Carbo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

moeman said...

1. Spicy Penne Bolognese with a Fetzer Chard.

2. Rhubarb and Strawberry frozen yogurt.

Young HF29 said...

Nadine, when i got to #2 my choice was gonna be "the second half of #2 with extra Baileys", so obviously now I vote for #4

Nadine said...

How did I know that would be the choice?

Right, so opening it up to everyone for votes on what Nadine should eat for dinner...if you care to vote.

---

Seems to me that - even though we're on different sides of this thing - everyone is completely frustrated by that first period.

Enough with the foreplay already...someone score! ;p

Young HF29 said...

nadine "frustrated" is positively accurate.

alright im positive we need to score the the first goal for a change

moeman said...

Nadine knows, foreplay, although positively fun can be a bit tiring. Time to put the wood the the Flyers and pop one in, or two. The Zamboni can clean up the mess and lay a nice clean sheet for another round of positively exciting play.

Nadine said...

Wait a second, penalties are allowed to be called against the Habs tonight?

*Totally confused!*

Young HF29 said...

you see Nadine, nothing is fixed. well, at least until you guys play Crosby

Young HF29 said...

i am positively apoplectic at the chances we are getting and not capitalizing on

@nadine
haha it seems like so long since the flyers had a powerplay. but don't fear! i'm sure the refs will step up their game.

Nadine said...

Uh, Cindy is not a problem. Malkin is.

Besides, it's waaaay to earlier to be talking about the EC final being a Battle of Pennsylvania, 'kay?

kmart said...

@HF29
If we win this series and draw crosby and get the same sort of reffing i may just have to end my life. pittsburgh fans are the worst, and the last thing i need is another year of listening to them gloat. i may go as far as rooting for the red wings should they make the finals

Young HF29 said...

a Koivu penalty in the offensive zone. i'm positive i've sen that somewhere before

Nadine said...

Okay, really must step away and do something else for a bit...no matter what the consequences may be!

Yeah, Koivu! Way to give us another one. (Although, really, with my fondness for Finnish players, I actually like the guy when we aren't playing the Habs.)

Enough with the pessimism. They've outscored Philly well in the 3rd period - with only one goal to go, they should come back and win 4-1.

;)

Young HF29 said...

Nadine I do believe this my be the winner. I have to check the archives. it's the zenith of the Habs and the FHF season, as we head toward the inevitable defeat.

It really one of those series where the simple adage should apply:

"Play your game and the goals will come"

....this series is the exception to the rule, obviously.

There is one way the Habs will win this series - a win by a LARGE (4+) margin in game 5. This may get into Biron's head. If we get into his head, then there's still hope, but that's all we have. Hope.

@29: Totally agree, gotta be more careful. By 'cheap call' I was implying both a close call and an unnecessary penalty.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall when Carbo has his meeting with Begin.

@nadine: I know whereof you speak. The home commentator for the Ireland soccer games here is notorious for crap like that. E.G.: "...and Ireland have gone over 160 minutes of these championships without conceding a goal......OOOOHHHH NOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

Bah. Humbug.

@moeman: Done and done.

@orangeman
again, i say game 1. questionable call in a close game. i agree with you, i wish the refs would be judicious in what they call late in games, call blatant things, if it's questionable, let it go... that being said i'm glad they called that penalty. :-)

T.I.R.E. TABARNAC!

Ciboire.

Translation for Flyer fans:

Well done, Carbo. Really, well done. Switching goalies really bore fruit, no really, I swear. I bloody saw the difference.

Oh by the way, you guys; yeah, you, the sans-dessins(?) on the damn ice, listen up: ONE SHIT GODDAMN GOAL ISN'T WORTH TWO IF YOU MAKE 10 THOUSAND PASSES BEFORE YOU SHOOT! FUCK, S.H.O.O.T!

Finally, if the puck has eyes, maybe it's because Biron saw all of them! So guys, what to do? Well, maybe you could put yourself IN FRONT of the goalie so he can't fucking see the fucking puck?

Shit.

The missus says that "dessins" = drawings, but I woke her up especially to ask her that (it's 3:00 AM here) so she might be fobbing me off.....

So maybe sans-desseins might mean 'clueless' or 'planless'. Perhaps, but probably not.

That was a good post damion, btw.

sans-dessins == fuckwits

We have lost this series no doubt. But want to know what the big let down will be?? It will be July 1st when every big free agent signs somewhere else..........

kmart said...

maybe this is the wrong time to say it since i'm happy that my flyers came up with a big win, but seriously guys, this series isn't over. both the flyers and the habs wasted 3-1 leads in the opening round so you're definitely not out of it. it also helps that game five is in montreal, and i would be surprised if the flyers won there on saturday.
