Just a Bunch of News and Notes and a Stripper and a Sabres Game Preview and Open Thread and Stuff and Whatever

Hey kids! 81 games in, let me just ramble some notes for you, ok? Give me a break, I had a big meth night yesterday. And Panger did such an outstanding job filling in for me in the last preview, I feel I can't match his skillz now.
  • 730 PM, Phone Booth. Habs 7-2-1 in their last 10, Sabres 6-3-1. Sabres desperately fighting for their playoff lives;
  • Habs could still get first in the East, though the odds are now pretty slim. We need to win both our last 2 games and have Pitt only get one point (or less) in their last game. Though if Pitt loses their last game (in regulation), we could win the East with 3 of a possible 4 points. Point is, we're two back, one game in hand, but the Pens have the tie-breaker. Point is, I'm rambling. Damn meth;
  • Perhaps realising these slim odds, Habs have called up Matt D'Agostini and some dude named Gregory Stewart to maybe give some of our regulars some rest;
  • Let TSN tell you who's hot or not. They know everything because they are based in Toronto;
  • Habs I/O reports Franky B skated today, but then limped off the ice after 15 minutes. Ryder wasn't on the ice at all. Grabs and Kovy have the flu, though Kovy was on the ice this morning. I am now listening to Carbo. He says Ryder has a leg problem we won't know til tomorrow, he won't play tonight. Saku's latest tests were good;
  • More from the post-skate pressers - Franky B hopes to play Saturday, DOOM wants to play tonight but they won't let him (man I love him more every day). Matt D'Agostini is hoping "just to fit in," and is not sure if he is playing tonight. Greg Stewart "needs to keep it simple and work hard." Good for you, kid, whoever you are.
  • UPDATE - man, things are changing by the minute. Grabs out tonight, D'agostini is in.

A nice round of "Go Hockey" for all of you commentors. It's getting exciting, eh?

You can tell TSN know's it all, when they say Breezer is hot...

Go Hockey.

Breezer and Dandy hot. Leafs suck.

found on Habsinsideout.com: Carey "the puck stops here" Price.

I like Panger's line better, the one about carey stopping the rebound.

Heavy drinking to celebrate the division clinch ?

Who gets the Start ? TFS (tm) or Halak ? I mean d'Agostini' is in the lineup...

Come on, Habs!! I know the Pens only have to deal with the Flyers while the Habs have to play, like, real teams? But I don't want to live in a world where the Penguins win the conference. It's just too painful.

And as a relatively new Habs fan, I have to ask...which would be more fun for you guys to see tonight? A crippling Leafs loss or a Sens team falling in regulation and teetering on the edge of playoff contention? Any less than 3 points by the Sens these last two games and two wins by the Caps puts Ottawa out on their rears...food for thought. ;)

@CC - i cant speak for all Habs fans, but myself I am quite enjoying the Sens slide. of course, if i really take any glee in it, we'll end up in a Habs-Sens 1-8 or 2-7 and we'll get swept. so i will just STFU

Rédaction said...

29, you're a jerk. Have you no faith ?

Young HF29 said...

nope. no faith whatsoever. i've been wathcing this team for to long. my faith was lost around 1990

29 - I've been busy STFUing with my stepdad (lives in Kanata, please don't hold it against him). Total karma if we face them in the playoffs and get spanked, IMHO.

Is it wrong that I am desperate for us NOT to finish 2nd. Not necessarily because I want the Conference title, but because the second seed, she doesn't do so well in the playoffs.

I'm also petrified of our karma if we finish 2nd and the Broons finish 7th. *shudder*

Looks like I'm joining you on the pessimist side of life, 29.

En passant, I'm SUPER happy that D'Agostini gets to play tonight, but I'm still pissed that Chips is stuck in the minors. WTF??

Oh, and GO HOCKEY, DAMMIT!!

Rédaction said...

Chip is a kid. Its a man's world now.

Young HF29 said...

I'm sorry Mtliste, Chips was excellent that first quarter of the season. in fact, i gave him the unsung here award at the time:

http://fourhabsfans.blogspot.com/2007/11/ladies-and-gentlemen-on-stage-for-your_21.html

somehow he's in someone's doghouse

@capschick:

I can't speak for every Habs fan but I will always take the scenario that is most damaging to the Leafs over anyone else (except the Bruins, for obvious reasons. Fucking Cam Neely.) Right now, that might be a Leafs win, to take them further down the draft list.

I am also on board with HF29's pessimism, but that's a natural state for a kid with Scottish Catholic roots.

Oh, and Go Hockey!

Young HF29 said...

*unsung HERO. so many typos today, I must be chaneling Panger

Rédaction said...

@LG and 29: I, just think it would be useless to call back Chips, he's doing a great job in Hamilton and he's helping the Bdogs.

Why call him back to either bench him, or bench a veteran. I know what you think of Slowminsky, but we need veterans in the playoffs. Its a man's game.

Young HF29 said...

ok Mtliste, I'll buy that

just heard Franky B on CJAD, who said if it was the playoffs, he would be playing. so i guess its not too, too serious.

meanwhile Kovy's flu may be getting worse and he may not play

around and around we go

*rushes over to the Bell Centre with a pot of chicken noodle soup and NyQuil for Kovy*

Dammit, man - DON'T BE SICK!! Take from now until April 9th off. Don't play.

And, for the love of God, DON'T BREATHE ON ANY OF YOUR TEAMMATES!!!

Am off to pick up Mr. LG77 prior to the game! Tonight will be, uh... interesting... i hope...

Oh and 29 - your typos weren't that bad, yet. I could still understand what you were typing. *ducks punch from Panger*

Anonymous said...

Mtliste - FUCK the bulldogs. I could give a flying what he's doing to help them out. I think it's a waste of his talents as a player for him to be stuck in Hamilton.

And the men/boys thing - crisse, y'é plus âgé que la moitié de nos recrues. He doesn't have that much time before he's going to be looked at "de travers" because of the fact that he hasn't been able to consistently make an NHL team.

And it would be a crying shame to chuck such a PROVEN clutch player into the hockey waste bin...

Sens go up 4-0 on the leaf, who comeback to tie it up and beat OTT in OT. We get to laugh at the leaf for a while, watch OTT crap out and sleep off the beer buzz. Habs beat BUF 3-2.

Rédaction said...

LG: Hold the front door, we're not waisting anything. We would be waisting cap space if we had slowminsky eating popcorn and chips playing. He'll be there next year.

Let the real man win the cup *jinx*.

p.s. I like the franglish. Tres montréaliste, haha.

Go hockey

HFF33 aka Panger said...

@Capschick: I'd rather have the Leafs win, even though I hate them infinitely more, becase then they'll get a worse draft pick. I am PRAYING that the Leafs don't realize you have to build throught draft and not try to buy a team like in the pre-cap era.

@29: I can't decide whether to thank you (for the kind words about my preview) or yell at you (re: spelling). Give me a break, I think I've done quite well for my self despite my illiteracy. Thanks Jacques Demers, I couldn't have done it without you.

Go Hockey!

Breaking out the Tiuca for tonight. Brewed to perfection and brought over from Romania by my wife's Grandmother.

I still think 2nd is the place to finish. 7th spot will likely be reserved for Philly or Boston. Philly once again showed why they have trouble when matching up against skill teams. They tried to rough up the Pens and wound up taking more penalties. The Pens got two 5 on 3s out of it and put the game away. Both Boston and Philly have this problem when they play the Habs.

since we all seem to be happy with second place, i will be skipping the game tonight cause it doesnt matter.

actually, im skipping it to celebrate my sister in law's 40th bday, i expect to see you guys in the 3rd. be excellent to each other!

Who the hell picks family over hockey ?

Btw, I got my playoff tkts. Well actually my dad got his playoff tkts, but I'm entitled to at least half the games. The CH organization did an amazing graphic design job, seriously. Every ticket celebrates a Stanley cup winning goal scorer. Cournoyer, morenz and Muller are all there.

@Capschick: A Leafs win will accomplish 2 things: a) perpetuate their delusion that they don't suck that bad so there's no need to change anything, and b) bring the Sens that much closer to the biggest collapse in NHL history.

@LG77: Chips injured his shoulder in the last game & is out 7-10 days. Look for him to be called up then.

@Everyone else: Go Hockey!

Carbo on D'Agostini: "He skates better than Ryder... he still hasn't proved he can score in the NHL."

So how is he worse than Ryder, again?

TSN wants me to believe the team is in panic over Ryder but I doubt it's much more than the team being careful heading into the playoffs. Same with the flu--better they get their rest now and be hale and hearty for the playoffs. If it spreads it's basically a death sentence. Grabs and Kovy should be strapped down to their beds with a chicken soup IV for the weekend.

Rédaction said...

I doubt Kovy is actually sick. I think carbo wants to rest him, without having to face criticism about abandonning 1st place race.

Am I terribly off here ?

Anonymous said...

I think it's very possible, but I've seen the flu sink entire teams (there was a Blues-Canucks series a couple years ago where the Blues got it and you could watch them wither away from game to game) so for my mental well-being they should play it safe anyways.

I'd rather they were all ready to go and contend for the conference, but if giving up first place is the price for not collapsing in the first round against a team like Boston or Philly, I'll gladly pay it.

We are in the twilight zone now, Slowinski scores 2??

As I just said to Ms. (she doesn't like Mrs.) Fezworth... Holy shit am I excited. This is the first Habs team I've ever watched that makes me want to do a 'Cruise' on my couch.

CheGordito said...

Started watching in the 2nd. How were they in the first?

@capschick: I'd rather see the Leafs win.

Young HF29 said...

i just walked in

what did i miss? slowinski scored 2? seriously?

Young HF29 said...

well from the box score that looks pretty ok.

Ottawa 8-2???

Sounded like a fun game. There should be some kind of law forcing Shaw to carry RDS on extended cable.

Nashville leads St. Louis, Minnesota leads Calgary, and Vancouver-Edmonton starts in half an hour. The West is a clusterfuck tonight.

Needless to say, the Canucks game is on PPV. But they're only airing the games nobody else wants to air on pay per view! It's certainly not an already incredibly profitable franchise further exploiting their fanbase. And even if it WERE, at least the Canucks are wildly successful on the ice, too... right?

(note: I believe you could swap out "Flames" or "Oilers" for "Canucks" and everything would still apply. I can't wait for the Leafs or Habs to go to a PPV system.)

CapsChick said...

I think secretly you were all hoping the Leafs got embarrassed like that and it caused them to implode...not that it wasn't funny, but seriously? I wanted the Sens to lose. Bah.

Go Habs though! Way to knock out Buffalo, that's good stuff :)

Star for the "classiest" play of the game: Kovy, for not storming off to the dressing room after getting his roughing penalty at the end of the game, but rather for sticking around so that he could congratulate everyone as they left the ice. Oh, and for handing his stick to a kid in the crowd while he was waiting for the game to end.

Boo urns for the least class: habs fans in the Molson Ex zone chanting the Goodbye song with 13 mins. left in the second period.

Habs' biggest unsung hero since Koivu's injury (and truly deserving of his first star): Smolinski.

Yes, I said it, Brian Smolinski.

He's been playing like a man posessed for the past few games. He's really stepped up to the plate as a center since Koivu went down...

I thought Bob was a moron for signing him, but once again, Bob knows best.

Oh and Sonia - thanks for the heads up re: Chips!! I'll save my righteous indignation for something else... ;-)

Anonymous said...

Why do the Leafs suck? Because God hates them? Makes sense to me. Case closed. They should lose by 6 every time they play.
Slowinski and Jesus Price played like pimps on skates tonight.
Kovy was sick? I want his chicken soup recipe.
I'm sleepy. Go Hockey!
Boom Bap Boom Bap

msevigny, why can't you just order rds on shaw? that's what i did. or do you not have a box?
