The Morning Skate for Wednesday, March 17th

Bullet points for what you missed while dreaming of getting a Nexus One...
  • Six in a row, bitCHes! Of course, it helped that the Rangers failed to show up. Well, except Lundqvist. And Avery let everyone know he was there with a slash on Gomez after the game was decided. Little Tits scored in his 3rd straight game. Good solid road game. That felt good going into these four days off;
  • Bs take care of the Canes 5-2, thanks to a 3 goal outburst in the 3rd. One of those goals came from Mark Recchi, who tied Guy Lafleur on the all-time list. Recchi and Guy, they're like the same player;
  • Lefas beat the struggling Sens again, letting Habs fans dream of, what, fifth place? The division after a Sabres loss? Sorry, we're hallucinating this morning;
  • Nashville lets the Phlyers have a point;
  • Tampa loses to Phoenix, is sliding down the East;
  • Same thing for Florida, who faced an Ovie-less Caps team that still scored 7 goals;
  • John Tavares had a five-point night in the Isles 5-2 win over the Nucks;
  • Pleks "doesn't want to be a distraction," will negotiate with the Habs after the season. Crap.
Happy St. Patrick's Day to all. Enjoy a breakfast Guiness with these video highlights.

Can't let the Lefas get streaky.

Go you fucking Habs!

thrilled that my presence in front of my TV last night did not break the streak after missing all previous games in said streak!!!!

GO HABS GO

Why is it a distraction if Plek's agent and Gauthier meet and talk things over?

It's like when a woman you've been seeing for a few months says she wants to talk about "us" and to "make plans", and you keep changing the subject.

He's gone isn't he?

Darksyde said...

Fuck the whole, "Can't let the Leafs get streaky..." shit. I say we lose on purpose on Saturday. The better the Laffs do, the worse the Fucking Bears draft pick gets. Do we REALLY want the B's with Hall or Seguin? I don't.

Orangeman said...

Did any one of us see not only a 6 gamer going on at this point but 7/8 since the break with the only loss being a very close one in San Jose? Additionally, did anyone in 1993 believe that a close lose in the Bay area would count as a proud moment for the Habs? For that matter, did anyone here ever believe that a 'Pacific' division might exist and actually be by far the best division in hockey with 3 teams from California (one modelled after a Disney flick), a franchise out in the desert that was a gavel smack away from being shut down half a year ago and a franchise in Texas. Texas, people. Texas.

The point is, I've lost alot of money on predicting the future.

Also, Go Habs Go!

ps happy st. patty's day! I've already had mine if you can't tell.

Darksyde said...

Don't get me wrong, I want the Habs to win, but I want to fuck up the Ruins draft day wet dreams, too. So conflicted!

kevincrumbs said...

I was thinking to myself yesterday afternoon that if the Habs had to lose one of their next two games, I'd rather lose to the Leafs as the points don't mean much to them.

I think we're losing on Saturday, folks.

moeman said...

No need for a loss vs. the Lefas. Why let elf have any fun? Bs can fuck themselves up and go fuck themselves. So long as no truculent Lefas goon intentionally injures a Hab, I'm happy. Bonus, nothing like a pissed off, excuse-making cbc/hnic crew (including pj) to make my Saturday night.

Number31 said...

Do you realize what will happen if the Leafs win Saturday? The bitching will return and those HNIC droogs will get all snarky. Well, snarkier than usual...

BURY THEM WITH 5 GOALS! And bubblewrap Markov please, else that little fucker Grabovski decides to casually run him into the boards again with 5 minutes left...

Orangeman said...

It's always a good game between the Habs and the Laffs no matter what the positioning. I expect the same on Saturday. Both teams have a reputation for ending the other's streak as well as playing the spoiler. I have no idea what to expect which is exactly why that rivalry will always be more exciting to me than the one with the Bs (plus I spent my teens in Leaf-country and everyone I know back home is a Leaf fan including a battle to keep my baby neice safe from misguided Leaf flavoured kool-aid drinkers. Think of the children!).

The real drama comes from watching the other teams make up their games in hand, espeically since so many of those games are with each other.

DRAMA!

Folks, you NEVER, and I mean EEEVVVVERRRR feel even a little bit okay about a loss the the Leafs or the Bruins. The Leafs need to lose every game for the rest of the year. So do the Bruins. Don't worry about the B's getting a couple of lottery picks ... in '97 they scored Thornton 1st and Samsonov 8th and it didn't get them anywhere. Taylor Hall will become a superstar on whichever team the Bruins offload him to 5 years down the road because Jeremy Jacobs is too cheap to pay him, and Brian Burke will still look like an idiot when One-Ball Kessel becomes a 21st Century Rick Vaive (50 goals, 25 assists, no discernible progress towards contending.) Fuck the Leafs and Bruins right to hell.

Yeah, I'm pissed I'm at work instead of the Old Dublin (the old Old Dublin, not the new Old Dublin) on this most excellent day.

4 points away from the division! Monday night will be a definite four-pointer against the Sens but maybe that's looking to far ahead. YEAH BABY!!!

I love the nickname TITS for Andrei, but the way hes been playing we need to change it to something like the Gambler. (not cause he takes chances on the ice) but more because he plays like he has a gambling problem and hes actively trying to fuck the team up to pay someone back....

P.S.
A few non hab fans recently have been making jokes to about how the habs always get the calls especially at home. Just checked they have the least power play opportunities in the league.....

Orangeman said...

@Arazi: Last I checked they have the least calls for and the most against...BY FAR. No judgements, just stating a (2nd hand) fact.

Happy St Paddys day! A day for us Irish to be proudly belligerent and not sober ... 6th win, 6th place .. one more six and I dunno whats gonna happen.

Young HF29 said...

@bea - thx, updated

agree with 10. Fuck the Leafs, fuck the Bruins. let them lose everything. and I was at the new Old Dublin last night. it's depressing (even though I can get Creemore there)

Chester as our Irish representative, was it OK for me to have 3 shots of Bushmills at breakfast this morning?

Erin Go Braghless!

Happy St. Paddy's Day all. I've got the day off. Just starting on my first Guiness. Dressed head to toe in green. Heading to the pub with some buddys after lunch for a day of drinking. Probably call in sick tomorrow.

Gotta agree 110% with 10 on the NEEEEVVVVVVERRRRRR hoping for a Leafs win vs the Habs. Never. Ever.

Is there any video of the late game incident with Avery? I like Gill's comment about him (Gill's a funny guy actually):
"He seems to do that a lot, so it gets frustrating. He's a treat."

Chester said...

@29
Three shots is fine, that should hold you till lunch. Irish Whiskey is so much more than a breakfast drink.

@Orange - in the 70s California had a team named after an underimpressive marine mammal, Texas had a pro-ish team named after a candy bar, and Phoenix had a pro-ish team named after a cartoon bird (coincidentally displayed at right.)

So believing that there might be teams out there - no problem. And teams that fold - no problem.

But believing that they might actually win - there's a different story. The Golden Seals only won 13 games in 73-74, and I remember that paying them a visit was usually good for a laugh in those days.

Ahh, the good old days.

Le Douze said...

@Orange - and, no, I didn't see 7/8 after the break, with the only loss a near victory to the Sharks. Do you suppose BG feels vindicated or pissed off?

Top of the day to y’all!

The euphoria of winning streaks is getting to the head of some. Letting the Leafs win ! You should know that some have lost their first born for less than that. Go have a pint you’ll feel better.

Division title, yeah baby !!!

PS. Shouldn’t a 6 game winning streak entitle us to some hot chick pic?

Happy St-Patrick's Day all!

How fitting that we would be blessed on this day with a wonderful piece by BR: http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/295591.html

And I was SO looking forward to his retirement.

A Detroit first grade teacher explains to her class that she is an American. She asks her students to raise their hands if they are American too. Not really knowing why but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into the air like flashy fireworks.

There is, however, one exception. A girl named Kristen has not gone along with the crowd.

The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different; "Because I am not an American."
"Then", asks the teacher, "What are you?".
"I'm a proud Canadian," boasts the little girl.
The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Kristen why she is a Canadian.
"Well, my mom and dad are Canadians from Toronto, so I'm a Canadian too.

"The teacher is now really angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly. "What if your mom was a crappy Toronto hockey player, and your dad was a crappy Toronto hockey player? Would that mean that you're a crappy Toronto hockey player too?"
A pause, and a smile. Then, says Kristen, "Nope! That'd mean I'm an American!"

This is hilarious. The Pension Plan Puppets gloating over their beating the Sens with a headline that says: Ottawa Still Second Rate "City" With Inferiority Complex.

Buddy.

You're from Toronto.

Poor Orangeman, take a look at Phoenix attendance figures, I see 9K, 9K, 9K, anybody want to send 10K. They could draw more in the 'Peg, you betcha. They could probably draw more in Warroad or I-Falls, or Minot. It looks like their big nights are caused by out of town fans flying in for tickets and a tan. And tell my why they didn't want to sell and move to Hamilton, whose franchise became the New York Americans.
