Oy Gevalt - Game 6 and Passover Preview and Open Thread

This evening, HF4 and yours truly will partake in a tradition that goes back to biblical times - running into the other room to check the TV for the Habs playoff score during a Passover Seder. Of course in recent years the tradition has died somewhat as the Habs were barely playing this time of year. But it's back. In honour of the tradition, we present this preview with a look at the Jewish holidays:

Simchat Torah - the holiday where we dance. The dance on ice goes at 7 PM tonight in Boston. Let's hope visiting Habs fans are treated better than this guy, who got his face danced on.

Purim - commemorating the Jews' deliverance from their enemies. Be sure to check out our enemies, the Big Bad Bruins. At least they ain't as bad as the Persians. If the Habs lose tonight, you may wish to participate in the Purim tradition of wearing a mask to disguise yourself.

Rosh Hashanah - The Jewish New Year is all about rebirth and renewal. The return of Saku and Franky B to the lineup could bring the rebirth of the team. Let's fucking hope so.

Yom Kippur - the theme is atoning for your sins. Let's see, who needs some atonement right about now? TFS, Pleks, Higgins, Streit, Big Tits, etc, etc. Basically, the whole fucking team.

Hannukkah - the Festival of Lights and oily fried foods. Mmm, donuts. The holiday lasts for 8 glorious days. This series has now lasted for 9 totally unglorious ones. This Jewish holiday gimmick has now clearly run its course.

OK less Hebrew school, more hockey. Remember, on Passover you must drink 4 glasses of wine. In each period.

I'm pretty sure that she could make the Dead Sea come back to life.

Good news about Saku. Let's finish this off tonight.

And you'd almost think that Toronto Star Hockey Hack Damian Cox read Lawyergirl's rant from a couple nights ago with his article today - http://www.thestar.com/Sports/Hockey/article/416186

From the end of the article:

"Puck movement can replace lost team speed, but it requires confidence and cohesiveness, both of which seem to have gone missing from the Montreal attack.

Kovalev's goal in Game 5 was essentially a solo effort, rather than the result of a succession of quick passes. Patrice Brisebois, for goodness sakes, has more goals than seven Montreal forwards.

To end this series tonight, or to survive it, the Habs need to find their hands, or even better, their legs."

Saku gets the C back from Koyvey! and leads us to the Promised Land.

I wrote a little article on my blog relating Koivus return to the theme song of the Spider Man cartoon. Thats just how epic this is to me lol.

@moeman - quality Jewsih humour sir. "Koyvey" - heh.

@geoff - LG77 should sue! (of course we say that about everything around here)

Is it a coincidence that there is a CH in kvetch?

and that a common definition is 'a HABitual complainer', making mr. donald s. cherry a crusty old kvetch!

Also, while I'm here, one of my fave hang-outs is the Rideau Bakery.

I love knishes, so sue me.

(Um, LG77 would you mind representing me?)

Saku is back.

My bouillon is back.

Thank God.

Even if all Saku does is boost our faceoff percentages, that's going to help us out so much...

But we'll know within the first five minutes whether we're going to win tonight - if we're still playing that fucking defensive system, we're toast.

And the Toronto Star is not worth suing!! ;-)

Go hockey!!

Anonymous said...

Moeman - only if you promise to pay me in knishes.

You forgot another one: Schvitzing. There's a CH in there too.

Two definitions for you:

I'm too cheap to turn on my air conditioning in my condo so I am currently schvitzing.

-or-

If the Habs don't come out skating tonight, Carbo will be sCHvitzing with fear of Gainey's wrath...

(I was the token Shiksa of Côte Saint Luc for a while. Go Baily Park!!)

Right, my local soccer team (Sligo Rovers) beat their local rivals Galway United 3-0 this evening (and I froze my ass off in the stand). Here's hoping that my teams (inc. Montreal) didn't use up their goal quotient for the day in one game and that tonight was, in fact, an omen - a team I support beating a close geographical rival.

Go Habs Go!

Anonymous said...

Good start so far, much more energy on display.

Montreal has won every faceoff so far, according to Versus.

How many f**king short-handed breakaways have Boston had in this series???

This is a good hockey game. Habs v. Bs rarely disappoints.

What a dive by A. Kostitsyn, seriously! We're lucky that it's 4 on 4 at all.

@moeman: It's a great game. My heart is racing.

moeman said...

rips, one more period, have a Crown Royale my friend.

Anonymous said...

No Crown Royale in the house. :-( I've got a choice between harp Lager (which is FAR nicer in Canada than it is here, for some strange reason) and Budweiser (which was left here by a friend a few weeks back).

Ah feck it, I'll go for the methylated spirits. That only makes you go blind, right? I'll need my hearing for the next 20+ minutes but I can't bear to watch it.

Anonymous said...

.......so how much meths would I need to drink to dull the pain of what just happened?

Les Boys are not putting pressure on or checking the puck carrier in the neutral and that is giving Boston great chances. They can't keep on doing this.

moeman said...

These Habs are stuck in neutral. Time for a quick lube job.

moeman said...

rips, what did you drink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Right, now play AGGRESSIVELY, not defensively. If you do this, you'll win (barring a stroke of skill/bad luck).

C'MON!!!

Anonymous said...

@moeman: Meths, weren't you reading? :-p

Anonymous said...

The Habs are trying to beat the Bs at the Bs game. It would be much easier if they beat the Bs playing the Hab's game. Fast and crisp. Why sink to their level? This will be the longest 8 minutes of my life.

@orangeman: Agreed. Oh, how I agree. We can't beat the Bruins at their own game unless we get lucky. Fact.

Anonymous said...

Actually, I think we can beat them at their own game (see: games 2,3), but why bother? Habs dominated them by playing the Flying Frenchmen (Russian) way. Why make it hard for themselves? Just f-ing play your game!

Dear Saku Koivu,

I love you. Please marry me. Higgins can visit anytime.

Anonymous said...

I smell overtime, perhaps.

Although with three minutes left, there could be another 6 goals scored.

Anonymous said...

@orangeman: OK, we beat them at their own game in games 2 & 4 but that was really down to Price playing on his head at times....

OH FOR FUCKS SAKE, DO WE HAVE A FUCKING DEFENCE AT ALL OR WHAT????????

Four goals conceded in the third period AGAIN!

Anonymous said...

If Pleks was playing like a little girl up until now, then the defence tonight played like a f**king zygote.

Everytime they play the open/fast game, they score. Everytime they try to out 'clog the neutral zone' the Broons, they get scored on. This is very apparent to everyone except Carbo. LG77, I agree with your previous post/rant. I place these losses squarely on Carbo's shoulders.

They had this game, should have won it. Maybe its their youth showing. I don't know. They're better than the Broons in every aspect except the grabby, boring defence. But, hey, let's try to play Boston's game instead of our own.

15 years of watching mediocre/horrible Habs and I've never felt so angry and frustrated with them.

I'm a teacher, and it's like watching a smart kid slack off in class because his dad tells him he should concentrate on soccer. But he sucks at soccer. Bad. So he ends up being cut from the team and failing math.

I think my relationship with the Habs is an abusive one and I should seek counselling.

Anonymous said...

I will be watching on Monday with hope in my heart but fearing the worst...it will be just like last November!

Anonymous said...

Honestly, that's a game they should have won. You don't give up three leads like that.

This third period sucked big time from a habs fan point of view. But honestly, that was an amazing game.

I'll try to stay away from all habs related coverage on the internet until monday, because it's gonna be ugly tomorrow!

There is still a last game to play. At home. Remember it's the bruins, they always find a way to lose in a heartbreaking way at the last moment when they play us. There is still hope.

Anonymous said...

I'm fucking heartbroken right now.

It may be girly, but I've got tears in my eyes and my hands are shaking.

But at least I give a shit.

Which is more than can be said for certain other people who were wearing things with CH logos on them this evening.

Koivu showed why he's the captain of this team tonight. He was the heart and soul. Too bad nobody else gave a fuck. Kovy, Markov, Kostitsyn (both of you), Hamr... I'm talking to you.

The other person I'm talking to: Carbo. You clearly didn't learn your lesson when we had our slide in the early winter. You had to fall back to this shitty system and stick to it regardless of the on-ice results.

The definition of lunacy: doing the same thing again and again with no results.

Get your head out of your ass you fucking lunatic.

Anonymous, I completely agree with you, and not just 'cause you gave me props - I've never been this angry at them either.

You fuckers built us up to believe in you. And now you're letting it slip away.

Fuck you. Fuck you all.

Anonymous said...

Well said anon & lg77.

@grrrreg: The Bruins are flying right now. Sure, we have the historical edge on them. Sure, they love to comically implode at just the right time.....but this time, the force is truly with them.

Carbo should sit the entire team down after this latest meltdown and ask them one question: "Where's your f**king pride?"

Anonymous said...

Rips - actually, I don't think Carbo should be the one to do it. Koivu's the one who ripped out his heart and left it on the faceoff circle tonight. He should bitchslap most of them, starting with Kovalev and ending with Carbo.

With a nice little detour in Markov's vicinity. If he catches Hamr on the ricochet, so be it.

Brian said...

Get your togas pressed Habs fans, these guys are joining the Sens Monday night. No balls, no brains, no heart. Julien has out-coached Carbo as well. Repeat after me: toga, toga, toga.

Anonymous said...

@lg77: You're spot on. I should have used Koivu instead of Carbo. He was great tonight as was Higgins.

As I was saying earlier on, I'll need a couple sleeping pills to help me sleep tonight (well.....Gravol - I'm a wuss). It's nearly 4:00 AM here and I'm still wide awake, shocked but not overly surprised. This has been coming since game 2

Anonymous said...

Even if they win on Monday, they've shown how they can sink to the level of their lowly opposition. Do you really think this team can beat Philly/Wash or NYR?

If it wasn't for Koivu this one would have probably been ugly.

I'm not a genius in any sense of the word, but it's pretty obvious that you should just shoot the puck on Thomas at all times because that guy gives up crazy rebounds like they've got kooties. But, no, let's play the slow cautious game. I can see they've practiced faking shots quite a bit. And they've gotten very good at missing the net. I mean, the Broons' D is good, but it ain't THAT good.

Btw, 'anon' above, who agreed with LG77 was me, the orangeman. I was too blinded by rage to remember to sign it. Just wanted my praise of LG77 to be on the record.

It's almost comforting that you all feel the same fear of your team completely blowing it and letting you down at the last minute. It really is anyone's game on Monday. Both of these teams know how to blow it royally, but win big at the same time...

Shit. Fuck. Shit. Piss barf shit. The only thing I can look for hope is Georges St. Pierre kicked the shit out of buddy tonight and the Habs have home ice. I'm hurt for the first time in this series. I still believe. Maybe not in a cup...but in one game.

It's almost comforting that you all feel the same fear of your team completely blowing it and letting you down at the last minute.

Universal hockey fan emotions.

During game 5 of the Red Wings - Predators series we were resorting to virtual animal sacrifices and praying for the Tigers to lose a game in our attempts to get a win for Detroit.

Good luck in Game Seven. Koivu was awesome - maybe he and the crowd will inspire the rest of the team to stop gagging, hack up the damn hairball already and WIN THE SERIES!

Go hockey!

Anonymous said...

moeman & LG77 - I just thought of another word with CH in it. And the Habs are at high risk of hearing it all summer, and well into next season, and probably for the rest of their natural lives. And when we all die, I would make sure to go to whatever afterlife the players went to & say it to them there.

...Or, they could win Game 7.

Anonymous said...

Sonia - I hadn't thought of that word. You are absolutely right.

Fuck, to think that I had woken up all Zen about the whole thing this morning. Now I'm deeply angry again...

... of course, they could just win game 7. That would work.
