I'd like to cheer for Vancouver, but Sundin has spoiled it for me. Thanks a lot, you big, bald asshole. So now I have to go with the idea that most teams are mostly Canadian anyway. Go Hawks.

Yeah, I guess it would be ok if the Habs weren't the last canadian team to win the cup...

...I guess...

Also it's hilarious watching canadian fanbases bandwagon and completely polarize about other canadian teams, either going all the way towards "WE NEED TO BE THE BEST CANADIAN TEAM" or "Oh god don't let another goddamn southern US team win another cup please"

Cornelius: why is it hilarious?

The obsession with selling our national sport to the Nascar Nation is hurting Canadian teams, but it's also presumably hurting original six teams.

When the Jets and Nordiques were in financial straits the solution was to move them south of the border. Now that those teams are called the Coyotes and Avalanche the solution is to get wealthier teams to bail them out financially.

Because Canadian fans care about their teams, no Canadian GM can afford the 4-5 years at the bottom that is almost a prerequisite for building a contender nowadays (Caps, Hawks, Pens, and before that the Lightning, Ducks, Hurricanes ...). So we're stuck in this endless cycle of mediocrity: can't draft high, and can't use our greater fan bases to buy free agents because of the cap.

That Sundin guy really deserves a Cup.

Go Canucks.

@CH: Actually, saying that bandwagon about other Canadian teams is probably inaccurate. Living in Calgary, I can tell you that the *last* thing any red-blooded Flames fan wants to see is Vancouver winning the cup. Most of them would rather jab Edmonton Oiler car flags into their eyes before seeing that happen. Likewise in Montreal if Toronto were the only Canadian team left, or vice versa.

There's a lot more nuance to Canadian-team-bandwagon-jumping than you'd think.

fezworth understands. if the Leafs were in the Finals (HAHAHAHAHAHAH), I would be cheering so hard for the other team i might even tattoo their logo on my ass

lawyergirl77 said...

29 - I don't even want to contemplate the Laffs getting to the final. ugh... I'd be lined up behind you for the tattoo.

My position on all of this?

GO CAPS GO!

Failing which - GO HAWKS GO!

I turned my TV off last Wednesday. I could care less who win's it now.

Cheering for Vancouver because they are from Canada would be like hoping Nickleback wins a Grammy. Just because they're Canadian doesn't mean they don't suck. The meltdown over on PPP if Wellwood and Sundin took a Cup would only be funny for a few weeks.

Go Hawks. Go Wings. In that order.

moeman said...

Go Canes, for now.

Go Nucks, despite Summer Teeth and FatBoy on your roster.

lawyergirl77 said...

See, I still can't cheer wholeheartedly for the Canes... I HAAATE Cam F. Ward.

haaaaate.

I would cheer for the Leafs against The Bruins.

I cheered for the Michel Bergeron / Dale Hunter led Nordiques over the Bruins.

If Dick Cheney played hockey I'd cheer for his team over the Bruins.

Young HF29 said...

I hate the Leafs more than than the Bruins

@ 29: Look behind you.

When the Leafs and Bruins play, I cheer for the building to collapse. Fucking building never collapses. I think I hate them almost equally ... so 29 is forgiven. Although I'm going to go to ANY BEER OR LIQUOR STORE IN THIS TOWN and buy some Creemore, just to taunt him.

moeman said...

Yup Bs over the leaf any day. Won't ever happen unless bettman is replaced. East v. West sucks. Should be 1-16, league-wide.

Young HF29 said...

i'm bleeding i'm bleeding

i am taunted, 10. HOWEVER, not for long as I am off to Ottawa this weekend! Will go straight to beer store or LCBO for Creemore purchase. the only decision is bottles or those awesome 500 ml cans. maybe a pack of each

KML said...

29, if you're in Ottawa hold off on the Creemore and pick up a couple ceramic bottles of Beau's.

It's a quality local beer and drinking out of a ceramic jug is like watching Pleks exit zombie-mode, a rare occassion indeed.

Young HF29 said...

KML nothing says I can't buy both. And I will.

I checked inventory at the LCBO I go to and I see a 750ml of something called "LUGTREAD LAGERED ALE" made by Beau's. Is that it?

Anyone else have an Ottawa or Ontario beer they'd like me to try?

29 (and all the rest of you degenerates), start here:

I don't know if Mill Street has its claws into the Ottawa/Hull region yet, but they make some fine stuff in Toronto's East End.

lawyergirl77 said...

10, you've convinced me.

Am now cheering for a building collapse in the Broons-Whalercanes series. Booyah!

Kate said...

Go Pens, if not Plan C = Go Hawks.

I respectfully hate the Bruins, Flyers and Ottawa. I loathe and despise the leafs and their fans. I couldn't stomach them ever winning another cup.

mr. gillis said...

Go Caps!!! Go Hawks!!

Go Cawks!!!

KML said...

29, lugtread is the one. My bad on the size.

Mill Street has made its way to Ottawa, it is indeed a solid choice.

The in-laws are in town this weekend so perhaps I'll take a few strolls down Mill Street for the quick sedations I strongly assume will be necessary.

Huh? Bruins vs. Leafs ?!? What's that, the latest Mike Myers flop?

What perverse discussions on FHF today (as opposed to the genteel, civilized ones we usually see).

Guys - I've lived in the UK for about 15 years now. The Laffs sucked when I left, they still suck - they will always suck and my kids will be very old before they win a cup - BECAUSE THEY NEVER WILL AGAIN!!! The universe would stop if they did so let's hopethnat doesn't happen - besides what the fuck does Burke know about hockey? About as much as any other Laffs fan I suspect. Now - about the Beer - Can you still get 50 in Montreal? Used to love that stuff!

I don't feel any obligation to cheer for the Canucks because:

1) All the other Canadian teams hate us, anyway, so I fucking hate them too.

2) I'm American, so this bandwagon last Canadian team doesn't automatically apply to me. I did, however, jump on the recent Oilers and Flames bandwagons.

I'm with LG77, I just can't bring myself to cheer for the Canes, ever. I frankly don't really care who wins the Cup now, as long as it's not the Bruins... which means the Bruins will win the fucking thing and ESPN will jizz its pants with dumb "BOSTON IS THE BEST SPORTS CITY EVER" pieces.

Fuck me. Go whomever has to play the Bruins in the Conference Finals.

Holy crap! Be still my Big Bird loving heart:

"Selon ce que RDS a appris, Larry Robinson serait grandement intĂ©ressĂ© par le poste d’entraĂ®neur-chef du Canadien de MontrĂ©al si on lui offrait cet emploi."

I never thought he'd be up for it, especially not after leaving the Devils for stress-related health issues. But if this is for real ... I like it! The Habs could use someone to teach them a little defensive responsibility, and finally some real head coaching experience.

He'd be an awesome choice for assistant coach too if the head job is too much.

punkster said...

Gotsta lub dem Hawks (doh dey ain't doin dat well tonight). Still doh, gotsta lubem.

Word verif: lamessel as is in "The Habs were lamessel this year. Next year less lameness would be nice."

kevincrumbs said...

@Melly: Yeah, it would be awesome to have Big Bird around in any capacity. I think he'd be a good choice to satisfy everyone's requirements.

Daniel Plainview said...

yeah if the bullshit requirement is still there Robinson would be the top choice.
